Journal Writing Prompts Chapters 1-7

Chapter 1
When do you think of the friendship between Xander and Cassia? What evidence from Chapter 1 supports this? What do you think Cassia means by a „Match‟ banquet? What kind of matching? Who does the matching? What artifacts do Cassia and Xander have? Is there any significance in having an artifact? If so, what? When Cassia stands up to be matched, what happens to her screen? What do you think this might mean? Support your hypothesis.

Chapter 2
Is there any such thing as „luck‟ in the society that Cassia lives in? If not, how do they make decisions? What do you think about the idea of not being able to choose who you can be married to? Who does Cassia end up being matched with? What are the pros and cons of this match? What does Cassia carry inside of her artifact? Is what‟s inside important? What do you think it does?

Chapter 3
Cassia mentions that she has to wear “sleep tags” (Pg. 23) given to her by society. Why do you think the Society makes her (and all of its members) wear these tags? Do you think that this is ethical? Now that Cassia has been matched with Xander, do you think there relationship will grow stronger or get worse? Cassia talks a lot of restrictions enforced on her and members of society, such as what she is able to eat “we eat for health and performance, not for taste”, and the list of “Hundred Songs, Hundred Paintings, Hundred Stories, and Hundred Poems” (pg. 29) being all that they are able to have access to. What do you think of these limitations on what they are exposed to? The Society has trained persons into believing that they can‟t “appreciate anything fully when [they are] overwhelmed with too much” (Pg 28.) Do you agree or disagree? What happens when Cassia opens her microcard given to her after the Match Banquet? Whose face appears on the port screen? What does this mean? Cassia asserts that “The Society doesn‟t make mistakes.” (pg. 36) What kind of mentality is she employing? How is Society viewed by its members – discuss the role of The Society.

Chapter 5
Who are the „Officials‟ in the Society? What role does a specific official play in Cassia‟s Match? What does she instruct her to do? Who is Ky Markham? What does it mean for him to be deemed an „aberration‟ by the Society? What other groups of classifications are there? What is the effect of classifying people in this way?

Chapter 6
Why is Cassia‟s relationship with her grandfather so important? Why does Cassia feel comfortable telling her grandfather about the error the Society has made with her match? What is a „Final Banquet‟? Why do you think they call it this? Cassia‟s grandfather says that if her grandmother were alive, she would ask Cassia whether or not she wondered. What is he referring to? Wonder about what? Is there something wrong with wondering? On page 48 an official refers to “preservation privileges” when discussing Cassia‟s grandfather. What do you think this means? Do you consider it a good or bad thing for society? Who dictates preservation privileges?

Chapter 7
How does Cassia‟s family (and the entire society) know exactly what day they will die? Is this a good or bad idea? When the Committee leaves her Grandfather‟s room during his Final Banquet, they say „Congratulations‟. What were they „congratulating‟ him on? Is this appropriate for a „funeral‟ type of experience? What does this reflect about the Society‟s feelings and relationship for individuals? What does Cassia‟s grandfather reveal to her during her private moment with him during the Final Banquet? What implications are there of her having this new found knowledge? What does this mean for her future? What message is her Grandfather trying to convey to her through this?
