Mr.

Hughes Class Expectations

Work Ethics Being a successful student involves knowing the proper time and place for work and social behavior. While many in-class tasks will require you to work together and discuss ideas, collaboration still requires students to be on task. To this end, Mr. Hughes has a Work Ethic Points System that will reward those students who demonstrate the ability to work and/or collaborate without wasting valuable class time, while showing those that do waste time and get off task that there are consequences. 1) There are 10 Work Ethics Points per person per assignment given in-class. 2) For every 5 Minutes of off-task behavior, 2 Points are deducted. 3) For group collaborations, these points are deducted from all members observed participating in the off-task behavior. 4) It is possible for the entire group to lose ALL of their Work Ethic points. 5) Mr. Hughes WILL NOT notify students of deductions. Points will be visible online after the daily update. 6) Students who maintain 80% or higher on Work Ethic points, and have no other discipline issues, are eligible for an O for citizenship on their report card. 7) Groups who maintain all Work Ethics points on projects guaranteed 60% or higher for final grade.

Bathroom passes are not a right at the high school level. You are expected to use your passing periods, lunch time, before school and after school time wisely. As such, my door is not a revolving door. However, I also understand that some days our stomachs just dont behave as expected. Therefore, each quarter every student will receive three tickets for bathroom passes. If the need arises, and it is WORK time NOT INSTRUCTION time: 1) Raise your hand and ask if you may use a ticket 2) Turn in your ticket to Mr. Hughes 3) Collect the pass from the Hall Pass Sign-Out Clipboard 4) Print your name, the date, and the time you leave the room on the sign-out sheet 5) When you return, write the time you got back to the room on the sign-out sheet 6) Return the pass to the clipboard 7) Return to your seat and get back to the task at hand without disrupting classmates Any tickets not used at the end of the semester may be turned in for extra credit on the final exam.

Progressive Discipline: Students are expected to follow all district, school, and classroom policies, rules, and procedures. Failure to demonstrate willingness or ability to follow these guidelines will result in the following steps being taken: 1) Verbal Warning The teacher will verbally warn the student that the behavior being displayed is not in keeping with expectations. The need to repeat the warning will escalate on the discipline scale. 2) Conference with student/teacher The teacher and student will have a private discussion regarding the behavior(s) in question. The student will have the opportunity to voice any questions, concerns, or issues that may be relevant. An understanding of what is happening that is disruptive to the classroom learning environment and what can be done about it will need to be reached. 3) Detention Detention may be served in multiple ways. It will usually occur on Friday afternoon, after school, in class. It may also be served in the form of an assignment relevant to the offense, if appropriate. (Failure to serve the teacher assigned detention will result in immediate escalation to BOTH steps 4 AND 5.) 4) Parent/Guardian contact In the case of repeated disruptions, or certain major offenses, parents (or guardians) will be contacted by phone, email, or letter, or a combination thereof. Lack of parental response prior to a repeated offense will not prevent escalation to the next step. 5) Referral to counselor Prior to being sent to the dean, student will have an opportunity to discuss their repeated behavioral or work ethic issues with their counselor. This is the LAST CHANCE to avoid a mark on the schools behavior record and a loss of citizenship for the marking period. 6) Referral to dean At this stage the student has shown an unwillingness to abide by the agreed upon standards of a cooperative learning environment. A referral to the dean will mean being subject to the schools discipline measures rather than Mr. Hughess, and an automatic U for citizenship for the quarter.
