Basketball and Bowling Volunteers Needed! The TR Section is looking for a few good adapted sports volunteers! We need volunteer coaches and buddies to help with Challenger Basketball on Tuesday evenings at Marion Diehl Recreation Center from 5:00p-7:00p, Jan 7-Feb 11th. Buddies are also needed help with Bumper Bowlers at 10 Park Lanes on Wednesday afternoons from 4:00p-5:30p, Jan 8-Feb 26th. Volunteers will need to pass a background check with Mecklenburg County. Pre School and Youth Programs
Karate for pre-school and youth, ages 3-12, with disabilities. Marion Diehl Recreation Center, 2219 Tyvola Road January 6 – February 24, 2014 (Mondays) *no class Jan 20 7:30 – 8:15 pm For new participants: $75 (includes karate uniform) For returning participants: $60 Stacey.Thomas@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov This program is geared to introduce karate to children and incorporate appropriate training for their age and abilities. Participants will work on listening, cooperation, balance, safety and beginner karate skills while being challenged and encouraged to succeed. Bumper Bowlers for pre-school and youth, ages 3-12, with disabilities 10 Park Lanes, 1700 Montford Drive January 8 – February 26, 2014 (Wednesdays) 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm (or earlier if child bowls quickly) $50.00 Stacey.Thomas@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov Come to 10 Park Lanes for a fun time learning how to bowl, or improving your bowling skills. Kids will love learning a new sport and playing with friends! Parents are asked to stay and watch their children’s skills, and assist if needed. The program fee includes 2 games of bowling per evening and shoe rental.

Challenger Basketball for youth and teens, ages 6-21, with disabilities Marion Diehl Recreation Center, 2219 Tyvola Road January 7 – February 11, 2014 (Tuesdays) Ages 6-12 5:00 – 6:00 pm Ages 13-21 6:00 – 7:00pm $45 Stacey.Thomas@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov Participants will learn the fundamental skills and drills needed to play basketball. Participants will learn to dribble the ball with either hand, proper ball handling, shooting techniques and good sportsmanship. Paralympic Air Rifle For adult disabled Veterans and injured service members with a physical disability Marion Diehl Rec. Center, 2219 Tyvola Road January 24th (Friday) 10:00 am – 12:00 pm FREE Jana.McMullen@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov The TR Section is excited to offer Paralympic Air Rife. The program focuses on accuracy, control and marksmanship. The program will cover safety, overview of equipment and rounds of shooting. All equipment is provided.

Spill Your Beans provides the opportunity for young women to talk about and gain support for issues they’re facing in their lives, such as health & safety, independent living, relationships, friendships, and self-esteem (participants will have the opportunity to choose the topics to learn about). Each month we will host a guest speaker or lead a discussion about issues that are important to you. Gardening in winter? YES! The Gifted Gardeners will be very busy: filling our raised tables with winter-season Break out the brushes, paints, clay and much vegetables; caring for permanent plantings at the Marion more! Spend Wednesday mornings expressing yourself through a variety of art media: painting, Diehl Center; crafting items using plant materials; and sculpture, collage and pottery, to name a few. All starting seeds for spring planting. Please dress for the materials for this 6-week class are included in the weather, as we spend part of each class outdoors, weather permitting. program fee.

Howie’s Cafe for adults, ages 18 and up with disabilities Marion Diehl Recreation Center, 2219 Tyvola Road January 18 – February 15 (Saturdays) 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. $75.00 Karen.Howard@mecklenburgcountync.gov Welcome to Howie's Cafe, where you are the chefs! Adult participants with developmental disabilities will improve or master basic cooking skills, with an emphasis on attractive food presentation and restaurant-style table serving. Additional skills taught will include kitchen safety and hygiene; making healthy food choices; and proper food handling and storage practices. Fees for this 5-week class include all materials and food.
VIP Travel Club For adults and seniors, ages 35 and up, with a visual impairment Pick-up/Drop-off locations: Marion Diehl Recreation Center (MDRC), 2219 Tyvola Road Metrolina Association for the Blind (MAB), 704 Louise Avenue January 22 (Wed) – JAARS Facility Tour, Waxhaw Pick-up: MDRC @ 9:00 a.m.., MAB @ 9:30 a.m. Drop-off: MAB @ 3:30 p.m., MDRC @ 4:00 p.m. $15.00 each date Karen.Howard@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov Enjoy a social day with friends, while building independence in the community. Join your friends for a 3-day session of daily programs...try something new, or practice favorite skills! These sample programs will allow participants to try out a variety of cooking, gardening, creative arts, dance, fitness and sport skill activities.
