Learners in groups produce a 1000 word (max.) essay, including references, that addresses the numbered instructions and responds to the central proposition of the assignment 1. Read the chapter by Frederic Stout in the textbook, "Visions of a new reality: the city and the emergence of modern visual culture" (pp. 150-3) and summarize the main points and argument. What is the value of visual culture for analyzing social aspects of urban areas? Select one of the images at the end of Part 2 of the book (Plates 10-23) and critically assess how your interpretation of the image relates to the contributions to Part 2: Urban culture and society Read the book and online materials on homelessness and related concepts like slum, ghetto, skid row, then briefly summarize the meanings and differences of these terms, giving examples Click here to watch part 1 of the film about Skid Row in Los Angeles, here for part 2, here for part 3, here for part 4 and finally here for part 5.
