Auburn area a hotbed of holiday happenings What is your favorite holiday event or tradition to take part in? N
ow that your holiday shopping is done (youre finished, right?) its time you relaxed and celebrated the season. Theres lots to do in and around Auburn and it all starts on Saturday with the Annual Festival of Lights Parade. The town literally lights up from the top of Lincoln way to the Gold Country Fairgrounds. Saturday also marks the first performance this year of The Nutcracker by Placer Theatre Ballet, as well as the first day of Rick and Janet Nicholsons holiday open house. Youll get blown away by their blown glass. Or maybe a music festival is what youre after. Members of Pablo Cruise and Tesla, along with the Parrotheads, hit Loomis in a concert that benefits the Placer County Homeless Shelter and Gold Country Wildlife Rescue. On Sunday, the Colla Voce Chamber Singers sing their Songs of Hope at two concerts, one at Pioneer Methodist Church and one at St. Teresa of Avila Church. On Tuesday its your chance to raise your voice at the Auburn Symphonys Messiah Singalong. But please keep your voices down as the Auburn Placer Performing Arts Center brings you Its a Wonderful Life as a live radio play on Friday, Dec. 13 and Saturday, Dec. 14. And that Saturday is also the first of two Old Town Country Christmas celebrations in Old Town Auburn. Enjoy caroling,

crafters, artists, live music and dance performances, hot cocoa and cider around the bonfire and, of course, Santa. Maybe the kids would enjoy creating a gnome home and visiting the cookie tree forest at a Holiday Faire at Live Oak Waldorf School in Meadow Vista. Or the adults could visit homes decorated for the holidays on Loomis Basin Holiday Home Tour. Theres Holiday Hysteria (not the shopping kind, you should be finished with that by now) with the Sierra Gold Chorus 18th Annual Christmas Show at Combie Bible Church, On Sunday, Dec. 15, Golden Bough will perform Celtic music and on Saturday, Dec. 21, Melvin Seals and friends will play Jerry Garcia music in A Very Jerry Christmas. Or if its contra dancing youre into, the Foothill Country Dancers are holding a Holiday Dance and Dessert Potluck at the Newcastle Portuguese Hall, And dont forget, every Saturday and Sunday beginning Dec. 14, Santa will set up shop in the Auburn Promenade. So come on down and see Santa, and while youre there, if you still havent finished that Christmas shopping, nows your chance.

hats busier than Santas workshop in December? The Placer Theatre Ballet! No joking around for this venerable organization. For the past three months every weekend has been dedicated to rehearsing some 125 dancers from all over Placer County into the classic Christmas ballet drum roll please The Nutcracker. Placer Theatre Ballet is a production company dedicated to the joy of storytelling through the art of dance. It welcomes dancers from throughout the region and its goal is to provide quality performance opportunities by offering aspiring young dancers significant roles alongside professional artists. We have a great cast this year, said artistic director/choreographer Shea Wing. We have open auditions and drew on talent from all over Placer County. Sheas organization notifies Placer County dance studios of auditions and then winnows the hopefuls down by degree of training and talent to come up with the final Nutcracker cast. The chosen dancers then have rehearsals for three months. Granted not

everyone goes to every rehearsal but its still a long time for families to mind the calendar and schedule other activities around the shows needs. While all this rehearsing is going on the costumes are being considered, altered to fit new dancers and some built from scratch. The ballet has a warehouse of costumes to draw on but they wear out and so there is always an addition or two or maybe more to be decided and constructed. Nearly everyone knows at least one refrain from this Russian classic written by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1892. The original choreography was by the revered Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. Wing doesnt pretend that the kids dancing in this
production are ready to tackle Petipa. He tweaks the choreography each year to suit the particular skill level of his corps de ballet and principal dancers. The policy is always open auditions, he said. There is no true company even though the same dancers may be cast year after year. Busy as Wing may be getting things under control for the opening of this family tradition ballet, he took time out to send this message to those who think they might not enjoy a ballet or that hesitate to take their children for fear they will be bored. Live theatre and live ballet are wonderful things, he said. If you dont experience them you will never know what you are missing. Try it out just one time with your family, especially your kids, and decide with them if it is something that is really just right for you after all.

Dancers in this years production of The Nutcracker include, clockwise from top left, Kristen Flowers (French doll), Joselyn Cesare (party girl), Makeila Lee (Chinese tea), Ariana Lordge (Arabian coffee) and Maile Zeng (marionette).

Members of Pablo Cruise, Tesla and others live at the Blue Goose
Concert aims to raise awareness and $10,000 for local homeless
BY KATHY SPOTO
ake off winters chill with the warming tunes from members of Pablo Cruise, Tesla, The Parrot Heads, Mr. December, and Nashville singer Jaime Kyle at a live concert raising funds for The Gathering Inn and Gold Country Wildlife Rescue.
Loomis resident Nancy Price took action when she saw the bleak contrast of two newspaper stories opening doors: a multimillion dollar sports arena and closing doors: a local homeless shelter without funds. Nancy and her husband, Steve Price, a founding member of Pablo Cruise, asked for a little bit of help from their musician friends to start the Be the Change, Winter Music Festival two years ago.
And according to Steve Price, They rocked the place, adding that, one hundred percent, every dime we raise, goes to our two charities. On Saturday, the Prices are asking Loomis-area friends and neighbors to bundle up the family and join the party under the glowing holiday lights at the Blue
Goose Event Center. In what is bound to be an energetic and upbeat concert, guests can dance the night away or enjoy the music from their seats. When the doors open, guests will mingle and get up-close to rescued owls and raptors, and may purchase Billy Bones Barbecue and cocktails.
Members of Pablo Cruise ,who will perform at the Be The Change Winter Music Festival, include, from left, Larry Antonino, Steve Price, Cory Lerios (who is unable to attend) and Dave Jenkins. Inset, Frank Hannon of Tesla.

MESSIAH SINGALONG
AUBURN SYMPHONY When: 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10 Where: Placer High School Theatre, 275 Orange St., Auburn Cost: $10-$20 Info: (530) 823-6683, AuburnSymphonyOffice@gmail.com, auburnsymphony.com
n 2042, Handels Messiah will celebrate the 300th anniversary of its first performance. If you do some fast math, that makes 2013 the 271st anniversary of this classic of English Oratorio music. Thats a long time for a piece of music, any music, to hang around and morph with the passing years but Handel had it as they say and his Messiah remains one of the most performed works of Western choral music. The Auburn Symphony, under the baton of Maestro Peter Jaffe, invites the public to join in what has become a local tradition that is enjoying its own anniversary. This is the 25th year that the Auburn Symphony has presented a Messiah Singalong.
The backbone of the Messiah Singalong is the orchestra. The choral singers, pictured here in the 2012 presentation, are the muscle. Talented choral singers and soloists are drawn from the entire region to participate on stage at this annual celebration of the Christmas Season. Maestro Peter Jaffe, inset, will conduct.
Handel himself might view with pleased surprise the enduring appeal of this kickoff to the Christmas season. Yes, it is time, friends one and all, to venture away from electronica and stow cell phones, tablets and other jangling and distracting
oddments of our culture, pick up musical scores and wend the path to the Placer High School Theater to participate, partake of and otherwise revel in the Annual Messiah Singalong. Huh? Singawhat? Too true. We are not schooled as a general rule to raise our voices in unrehearsed song in public places. But this tradition, this music, is so special and the Symphony so attuned to making this a glorious participatory event that it wont
matter if your pipes are rusty, a little off-key or even if you are just too, too shy to start right in. Really. It wont matter. The singalong is an event born for the Messiah but also an echo of our not-so-distant past, according to Peter Jaffe. Prior to prerecorded sound, the music of the people was made in the home with a concert only as a special treat, Jaffe said. It was not uncommon for a family to perform together for each
others enjoyment and to enjoy making music as a group, Jaffe said. Robert Haswell, business manager of the Auburn Symphony, credits Jaffe for holding the Symphony together so it remains a mainstay of the community and is still around to perform this 25th edition of the Messiah Singalong. We have found that people enjoy opening the concert of traditional Christmas Carols and we do that with a wonderful medley, Haswell said. We recruit our choral singers from many sources ... we also stratify our audience to put the bass voices in one section, the sopranos in another and so forth. This is an inclusive event, a great event for families as a start to the Christmas season.

right up the street, and weve been doing clam chowder in bread bowls for decades now, said John Williamson, Auburn City Fire Department captain. We only do it for Country Christmas. We sell out pretty much every year. So if chowders on your radar, be sure to get there early. Each night begins with a flag ceremony and singing of the national
anthem, a tradition since 2001. Its sort of a peaceful way to begin, a moment of silence, Robinson said. Next up is a brass ensemble, representing the Auburn Community Concert Band. The Weimar Academy will perform, as well as stroll through Old Town caroling. Not strolling, but stepping in time, will be the Thunderfoot Cloggers, Country Scottish Dancers and troupes
from In Sync and Pamelot dance studios. The bonfire will be roaring, the Sugar Plump Fairies will be roaming and John the chimney sweep will make his annual appearance. But for Robinson, her favorite part is when she pulls out the great big storybook, sits in a chair in the plaza and has all the children gather around for a reading of Twas the Night Before Christmas while Santa acts out the story behind her. I was born in 1942 and my birthday is Dec. 18th so every year, we would get our tree (a silver tip) and decorate on my birthday, she said. My dad loved things like roasted chestnuts and roasted potatoes with the tree vendors in those days. Memories like that and with Country Christmas is what I'm determined to do with this event.

include everybody, said Eric Engles, board member with the Foothill Country Dancers. It doesnt require any fancy footwork, in fact there is no footwork at all. Its pretty easy and every dance is taught before-
hand. Engles said they typically get around 45 dancers, 60 on a big night. Ages range from 5 years old to 95 years, and skill levels are all over the map. There is an orientation
workshop a half hour before, he said. If you dont know anything you can learn enough in that time to do quite well. He said contra dancing is a form of New England folk dancing from the 1700s, kept alive and revived in the 1970s. It underwent an evolution, but there is still a connection to the old tradition, he said. There are hundreds of cities where you can go and find a contra dance today. The music is always live, and Engles said the band might even play a few Christmas songs, done so that they can be danced to. Please bring a dessert for the potluck spread during the break.

enthusiastic support from folk fans wherever they perform. With a dazzling array of acoustic instruments and haunting vocal styling, this trio of modern day minstrels presents a program that leaves little room for audience members to lose interest. Blending their voices in three-part harmony they sing ballads, lively singalongs and beautiful
acapella pieces and back themselves with the Celtic harp, guitar, penny-whistle, recorder, violin, viola, octave-mandolin, accordion, and bodhran. This year they have just returned from an extensive tour through Holland, the Netherlands, Austria, and France. The music of Golden Bough is enjoyed by listeners of all ages and you'll be hard put to sit still once the fire of the Celtic music is flamed by these fine musicians.
