So, after my soapbox from last post (and I do hope you looked that word up), this puts me in mind of one problem !"#$ students have and that is the every disturbin% and troublin% area of&&&&'!(A)*$A+,. ,es, you heard me, I said vocabulary& his is one problem every !"#$ student faces& -ow, touched on some issues which are associated with havin% difficulty in vocabulary& hese include not bein% able to clearly and accurately express your thou%hts or meanin%s you wish to convey because you do not know the words to use or how to use them& !r you could have difficulty describin% people, places or ob/ects a%ain, because you do not know the words to use& I think it all boils down to the fact that most !"#$ students do not know enou%h words in their vocabulary to express themselves fully& I often hear from a number of my students say 0sir, I /ust don.t know how to say it (express it properly, put it into words, etc and ad nauseum)&0 So, what is lackin% is vocabulary and this post is what you can do about it& So, let.s be%in&

'ocabulary, how do you build your vocabulary into a muscle1laden force which you can express yourself clearly, succinctly and ele%antly usin% a wide ran%e of words and phrases to convey your ideas, opinions and descriptions2 It.s not a hard thin% to do& It /ust takes a lot of exercise and that means practice and this practice involves many different methods& he ways to build your vocabulary is diverse& 3any think that it is %rabbin% a dictionary and studyin% it or lookin% up new words in the dictionary as you come across them& 4ell, you can do this, )* , this only %oes so far& 4hen people use words, they are not always (and in most cases) not used in a way in which the dictionary explains or describes& !ften they are used in a sli%htly different way and in a way that will convey a different, but similar meanin%& Another thin% is that words often have more than one meanin% and usually have several meanin%s and you need to understand these meanin%s in the context in which the word is used& Now, I'm going to suggest you do somet ing drastic and t is is to t row out t at dictionary!

5on.t study a dictionary to learn new words& $earn from how they are used in sentences& 4hen you come across a new word in your listenin% or readin%, try to infer the meanin% as it is used& here are usually clues, particularly in readin%, which can help you with this& !ne thin% you can do, is to replace the word with a word you already know and if that word fits, then you have a %ood idea of the meanin% of the new word& Also, look at how words at associated with other words, this would take it their etymolo%ical source& $et.s look at the followin% words6 suspend, depend, pendant, append, appenda%e, independence&&&&what is the

root in all these words2 It.s 0pend0& -ow, what is the meanin% of 0pend02 It means to 0han% down.& So, suspend means to han% from some place6 depend means to han% on to someone or somethin%6 pendant is an ob/ect which han%s from the neck6 append means to add to or set somethin% han%in% on somethin%6 appenda%e means a part which han%s off a central body such as an arm or le%6 independence means to not han% on to someone or somethin%& -ow, are you %ettin% the picture& All these thin%s have a root with the same meanin%, but the words each have different meanin% unto themselves& -ow, when I said to throw away the dictionary, I don.t mean that literally& 4hat I really mean is to not rely on it& "verythin% I said about words bein% used and meanin% differently than what their dictionary meanin%s is true& ry to %et to know a word by how it is used& hat way you will know it better& *se the dictionary only as a last resort& he best way you are %oin% to learn about new vocabulary is by readin% and throu%h listenin%& hat.s when you will come across new words& he best way to learn how they are used is by actually usin% these words& 4henever you come across a new word, use it& Speak it and write it& he more you use it, the more you will retain it and the better you will understand it& hese methods, I.m sure are not the only methods to learn vocabulary& I.m sure there are others out there, but for me, these seem to be the most obvious& !ne way to learn is to %o over to the "n%lish tests and practice the vocabulary and sentence completion tests we offer here at (,!nline&com& 4hen learnin% !"#$, you need to use everythin% at your disposal and here at (,!nline&com, we offer you a wide ran%e of material you can use and it doesn.t need to be related to !"#$& ,ou can use material from all the tests and by practicin% a wide variety you will %reatly enhance your skills and vocabulary& 4ell, that.s it for now& If you have any su%%estions on how to build vocabulary or strate%ies for !"#$, I would love to hear them& 7erhaps, I may even feature them in a blo% post& ,ou may write me at martin&v8tcyonline&com +emember, we here at (,!nline&com are committed to your success& hank you!
