INTRODUCTION
At the request of Mr. Merle Weaver of Arkansas lightweight Aggregate Corporation, Construcliol,l
Quality Consultanls. Inc. has prepared this Concrete Mix Design Analysis 10 provide a lightweight concrete
which is capable of yielding 28-day compressive strengths in excess of three thousand (3000) pounds per
square inch when tested in accordance with ASTM C 39. . This mix utilizp.s Arkalite (lightweight aggregale)
and was produced using a water reducing admixture and an air-entraining admixture. The trial batch
represented by IIlis report was proportioned 10 provide a slump 01 three (3) inches for concrete placement
by bucket or chute. However, Ihe addition of an approved high range wa~er-reducing admixture
(superplasticizer) al the manufacturer's recommended dosage rate to increase the slump to seven (7)
inches. will allow placement 10 be achieved by pumping. The use of the high range water reducer will have
no adverse eliecl on the compressive strengths of the hardened concrete. The concrete propoltioned in
accordance with this report is intended for general use as delineated b}' the specification criteria which
follows; i1 is, therefore, not designed to meel the requirements of any particular individual project.
The constituent materials, Le., cement. fine aggregate, coarse aggregate, admixtures, and water were
obtained per information provided in the Constituent Malerials Sources section of this report. Laboratory
analyses were performed on the fine and coarse aggregates to establish the physical characlerislics
required for proporlioning the mix. Specific test data can be found in Appendix "A" of this repor!.
It shou1dbe noted Ihat all sampling and testing of constituent materials was performed in accordance
with applicable ASTM Standard Procedures and acceptance criteria staled within this report is in
accordance wilh ASTIII1 Standards. Proportioning of the concrete mixture was accomplished in
accordance wilh ACI 211.2.

NOTE 1
On Monday, December 4, 1992 . a trial batch of 4.0 cubic feet was prepared in accordance with the
proportioning information provided above. The batch water, as shown, was corrected for free moisture on
the aggregates and the mixing was done in accordance with ASTM C 192. Fresh concrete tests, i.e.. slump,
air content, temperature and unit weight were performed; ten (10) compressive strength specimens were
cast for determining the physical strength characteristics of the concrete; and, four (4) specimens were cast
for determining the air-dry unit weight. Test data for both the fresh and hardened concrete tests follow in this
report.
2 Recommended for use when the desired method of placement is by pumping.
