The CUIMPB Centre Ernest Lluch is tasked with managing the permanent campus of the Menndez Pelayo International University (UIMP) in Barcelona. The UIMPs celebrate university campus coordinating and developing UIMP activities around culture, research, and specialized training, bringing together students and faculty from various university degrees and specialization course. Our mission is to promote both culture and science and to encourage the exchange of scientific and cultural information pertinent on both regional and international levels.

Pau Costa Foundation.

Pau Costa Foundation is advocating a profound change in the perception of landscape fire by the society, divulgating the knowledge on fire ecology, facilitating fire management at landscape level and bridging the gap between research, practitioners and society. It also aims to serves as information coordination platform and contact point to exchange and transfer knowledge in the field of fire ecology research and operational fire management.

Catalonian Public Institute of Safety.

It is the center of knowledge creation and transfer of public security system of Catalonia and an essential piece in building a model characterized by mainstreaming policies and based on the coordination and responsibility of all operators. It was created by law in 2007 with the aim of integrating in a single integrated training center, support the selection and professional development of various Catalan collective security system, always in collaboration with the organizations on which they depend. The Institute is an autonomous body with legal personality within the Department of Interior of the Generalitat of Catalonia

Welcome to the Euromediterranean Meeting on Wildfires to be held on 18, 19 and 20 November in Barcelona. As in any other field, in the world of wildfires, the flow information is a critical aspect among fire services of countries with similar climate, to establish strategies to tackle forest fires with the utmost professionalism. At the Euromediterranean Meeting on Wildfires, experts from various fields will share their knowledge with the participants with the aim to reach a better understanding of wildfires..

The course wants to establish a meeting point among the fire services, private sector technologies companies, forestry managers, research centers, fire ecology, psychologists and journalists. It is intended to discuss and find answers the common problems, promoting a culture of work safety and effectiveness in wildfire community through the past experiences lessons learning to improve for the future. Fostering collaboration and the ability to share knowledge on forest fires at all levels, as well as facilitating access to this knowledge.

As detailed in the following pages, the speakers represent European and international organizations at the highest level: Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Fire Department of New York, European Forest Institute (EFI), European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), German Aerospace Center, Ministre de l'Agriculture et du Dveloppement Rural de l'Algrie, Catalonian Fire Service Valencia Fire Service, Sports High Performance Center and Tecnosylva.

KEYNOTE Presentation

Chief Ronald Spadafora is a 35-year veteran of the Fire Department of New York (FDNY). He currently holds the rank of Assistant Chief (3-star). In September 2005, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, he responded as the Deputy Incident Commander with the FDNY Incident Management Team to New Orleans to assist the N.O. Fire Department. On 9/11, he was recalled to Ground Zero and supervised the rescue efforts at the North Tower (WTC 1) collapse area and fire extinguishment operations at WTC 7. In October 2001, he was designated the WTC Chief of Safety for the entire Recovery operation. Chief Spadafora is an adjunct professor teaching emergency management and fire science curriculum at both Metropolitan College of New York (MCNY) at the graduate level and John Jay College, City University of New York (CUNY) to undergraduates, respectively. He also is the senior instructor at Fire Technology Incorporated, lecturing FDNY Firefighters in firematics for promotional advancement. He has written numerous articles for the official FDNY publication, With New York Firefighters (WNYF), and is also on the editorial advisor board for the magazine. He holds a Masters degree in Criminal Justice from Long Island University, a Bachelor of Science degree in Fire Science from John Jay College and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Health Education from Queens College, CUNY. With more than 34,000 applicants for the Firefighters Exam, he was hired as a Firefighter in the first class of 121 (Cream of the Crop) off the top of the New York City Firefighter Eligibles List (7,847) on September 2, 1978.

PhD in Forestry Engineering is CEO of Tecnosylva and Coordinator of the first European MsC on Wildfires ( He was recently keynote speaker on the 2012 Global Risk Forum at Davos on geospatial wildfire technologies. His research activity is focused on wildfire modeling and geo-tools.

Dr. Jess San Miguel.

Leader of the FOREST Team, Dr. Jesus San Miguel-Ayanz, is a Senior researcher at the Institute for Environment and Sustainability of the EC Joint Research Centre in the field of forestry. Education: PhD on Remote Sensing and GIS by University of California-Berkeley (93), MSc on Remote Sensing and GIS by University of CaliforniaBerkeley (89), Forest Engineering Degree (87) by Polytechnic Univ. of Madrid. Professional experience: (95-97) Associate Professor of Forest Inventory, Forest Mensuration and Remote Sensing. (94-95) Assistant Professor same topics, University of Cordoba. Research fellow at the Joint Research Centre (94-96). European Space Agency (93-94). University of California-Berkeley (89-93).

Ms. Cristina Prraga Niebla.

Graduated in Telecommunication Engineering (with honors) from the Technical University of Catalonia. Since July 2001, working in the DLR-KN and participated as responsible for various projects of the EC and ESA. His research interests revolve around networking and integration of satellite and terrestrial networks, resource management for satellite communications systems engineering and system of mobile communications and broadband satellite, hybrid systems, aeronautical communications and communications for public protection and disaster relief

Psychologist, Head of the Department of Psychology of Sport High Performance Center (CAR). Specialist in psychology of high performance teams. Author of the books: Learning from the champions and Happiness Is not the goal

Ms. Nria Iglesias.

Head of the Information and Communication. Catalonian Fire Department.

Mr. Ral Qulez.

Bachelors Degree in Forestry, Forest Fires and Natural Resources. From 1992 to 1994 worked at the ICONA as a technician of the UMMT (Mobile Meteorology and Communications Units) backing wildfires operations, and organizing and managing Air fire fighting resources. From 1995 to 2003 operations chief in a Helicrew at Valencia and Murcia with operational actions on wildfires. Since August 2003, working at the Valencia Fire fighting Consortium as forester, forestry operating coordination, managing the Advanced Command Point at wildfires fighting operations.

Mr. Marc Castellnou.

Catalonian Fire Service. GRAF Crew Boss. Forestry Engineer (1997), holds a M.Sc. in fire management from the University of Lleida (2005). He is a Senior Fire Analyst of the Grupo de Actuaciones Forestales (GRAF) of the General Department of Prevention and Extinction of Fires and Rescue Services of the Catalan Government (since 1999). MIMAM Fire Extinguishing Manager (2006). UFF CTFC Manager (1997-1999). Fire Paradox project integrator (2006-2010). Coordinator of research projects on the fields of forestry fuel patterns, fire ecology and fire management. Organizer and speaker at international congresses, specialized courses and technical meetings (1995-2010)

Mr. Ammar Boumezbeur.

Doctor in population biology is currently Director of the protection of flora and fauna, the General Directorate of Forests, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. Its mission is the protection of forests against forest fires, conservation of protected areas, conservation of flora, fauna, the development of hunting activities.

Mr. Christophe Besacier.

FAO Forestry Department. Silva Mediterrnea Secretariat. Silva mediterranea is one of the statutory body that cover the Mediterranean region. We want to propose you a forum for advising and taking action on key forestry issues for Mediterranean countries.The work of the FAO Forestry statutory bodies is a combination of problem identification and policy and technical advice, to FAO, its members and others as appropriate.

Mr. Andreas Schuck.

Andreas Schuck was appointed in February 2009 as a Head of Office of the Central European Regional Office and the Observatory for European Forests EFICENT-OEF. Prior to his current appointment he was the Head of Programme for Forest Resources and Information Research Programme from September 1997 until December 2008 (current name for the Programme: Foresight and Information). He has extensive research experience on European forest resources, forestry statistics and information systems. He has excellent insight to international and EU policies through his engagements in various research projects. Andreas holds an MSc from the University of Freiburg, Germany.

Mr. Alejandro Garca.

Forest Engineering from the University St. Teresa of Avila and Forestry Engineer from the Polytechnic University of Madrid. He is currently chief of the East Cceres Forest Technical, Service Management and Forest Management of the Junta de Extremadura. Chief of the Technical Section of Forest Resources Development of Extremadura (DGMN) and Natural Resources officer. Has experience as technician at Forestry Programs of the Directorate General for the Environment.

Dra. Mara Gafo.

Mara began her international career in the European Commission's Directorate General for Energy and Transport in Environmental Policy Unit. Then, in the Department of Industry was Head of Forest Industry Team that prepared the Action Plan "Innovative and Sustainable Forest Industry". Today belongs to Unity "bioenergy, climate change and forests" DG Agriculture and Rural Development where she is Head of Forestry and responsible for the development of the New Forest Strategy of the European Union. Before joining the European Commission, Maria worked as a consultant in the Department of Environment of Arthur AndersenGarrigues and participated in several development projects in Mexico, Ecuador and Paraguay with the NGO Solidarity for Development.

During the conference there will be a permanent poster session so they can be discussed between the authors and participants in the meeting. May be issued in English or Spanish. It should include title, authors names and data of the institution to which they belong. The measures should be 60x90 cm. The deadline for receiving them is the October 31, 2013 and notified to the authors take up work within one week. The posters should be sent to the
