Human Trafficking Seminar Proposal

In my senior year of high school, I have decided to make an effort to become a more conscious, caring human being. I have always been ambitious and passionate about making a difference in the world, but this year I am finally acting on these desires and taking the first steps in this direction. I try to research and become aware of the issues impacting modern society, but have not yet learned much about human trafficking. With the trivial knowledge I have of this subject, it is a horrifying reality that too many people are victims of. In grade ten, I was selected to be the A. B. Lucas representative at the 2011 Hugh OBrien Youth Conference. It was a weekend where I was surrounded by other incredibly ambitious leaders my age from high schools all over South Western Ontario. We were told to consider ourselves the leaders of our generation, and our passions for social justice were nurtured and amplified. There were over 20 panel speakers that engaged us with discussion of societal issues. The aim of the weekend long conference was to teach us that we can make a difference, and show us how we can pursue global goals. It was made clear that the first step in fighting for human rights is being conscious and developing an understanding of the problems at hand. At school I am involved in the Scrooge campaign, GSA (Gay Straight Alliance), and Social Justice because I want to make a difference in the world. Though these high school clubs may not cure hunger, they act to better society in whatever ways they can. These involvements teach me about leadership, and are preliminary engagements to propel me towards a more impactful future. I am not quite sure of my career direction, but I am positive that I want to make a difference. I wake up every morning excited for life because of my burning passion to help others. Working hard at school is easy for me because I love learning. Learning is another deep passion of mine because knowledge is empowering. With more knowledge and skills, I will be able to make a bigger positive footprint on the face of earth. I am very lucky to live the privileged life I do, but I know that far too many people experience horrible circumstantial suffering. I am willing and eager to devote my time and effort to help victims, including those of human trafficking. I am very interested in going to the Human Trafficking seminar because I love learning, appreciate the work that goes into great presentations, and believe that awareness is a crucial step in setting things right.
