III B.Tech I Semester Supplementary Examinations, February 2007 POWER SYSTEMS-II (Electrical & Electronic Engineering) Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80 Answer any FIVE Questions All Questions carry equal marks

1. (a) Discuss the concept of geometric mean distance. How this concept used to find the inductance of composite conductor line. (b) A 3-phase single circuit 132 KV overhead line has conductors of diameter 1.8 cm each. The spacing between conductors is 4 m, 6 m, and 9 m. Find the inductance per phase per km. [6+10] 2. What is method of images? Derive an expression for the capacitance per unit length of a 3-phase transposed line. What is the effect of earth on the capacitance of the line? [4+8+4] 3. (a) Discuss why equivalent π circuit of a long line is preferred over the equivalent T circuit. (b) A three phase 50 Hz transmission line is 150 km long and delivers 25 MW at 0.85 power factor lagging and at 110 KV. The resistance and reactance of the line per conductor per km are 0.3 ohms and 0.9 ohms respectively. The line charging admittance is 0.3×10−6 mho per km per phase. Compute by applying the nominal π method the voltage regulation and transmission efficiency. [4+12] 4. (a) Each conductor of a 33 KV, 3-phase system is suspended by a string of three similar insulators, the capacitance of each disc is nine times the capacitance to ground. Calculate the voltage across each insulator. Determine the string efficiency. (b) A string of eight suspension insulators is to be graded to obtain uniform distribution of voltage across the string. If the capacitance of the top unit is 10 times the capacitance to ground of each unit, determine the capacitance of the remaining seven units. [8+8] 5. An overhead line has a conductor of cross-section 2.5 cm2 hard drawn copper and a span length of 150 metres. Determine the sag which must be allowed if the tension is not to exceed one-fifth of the ultimate strength of 4,175 Kg/Cm2 . (a) in still air and (b) with a wind pressure of 1.3 kg/metre and an ice coating of 1.25 cms. Determine also the vertical sag in the latter case. 6. (a) Derive an expression for the capacitance of a single core cable. 1 of 2 [8+6+2]

(b) The insulation resistance of a single core cable is 495 MΩ/km. If the core diameter is 2.5cm and resistivity of insulation is 4.5 × 1014 Ω − cm. Find the insulation thickness. [8+8] 7. (a) Explain the concept of power factor. (b) Explain any three causes of low power factor of supply system. (c) Discuss the disadvantages of low power factor and list methods to improve power factor. [4+4+8] 8. (a) What is the symmetrical components? Why they are necessary? (b) A 3-phase unbalanced system currents are read as IR =150A, IY =130A and IB =10A. the phase sequence is RYB. Find all the three symmetrical components for the case. [6+10]
