IV B.Tech I Semester Supplementary Examinations, February 2007 THEORY OF VIBRATIONS (Aeronautical Engineering) Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80 Answer any FIVE Questions All Questions carry equal marks

1. (a) Explain the term VIBRATION. Define the terminology associated with vibrations of a system, like natural frequency, amplitude, damping, damped frequency, free vibrations, forced vibrations and critical damping with sketches and plots. (b) Determine the equation of motion and natural frequency of a simple springmass system. Hence detemine its time period as well. Ignore the mass of the spring. [16] 2. (a) Define a single degree of freedom system and illustrate with two different exmples; a torsional pendulum and a spring-mass -pulley system. (b) The mass of the slender uniform rod shown in figure 1 is small compared to the mass attached to it. For small oscillations, calculate the natural frequency of the swing of the mass. [8+8]

Figure 1: 3. The 23 kg mass is resting on a spring of 4400N/m and dashpot of 130 N-sec/m as shown in figure 2. If a velocity of 10 cms/sec is applied to the mass at the rest position, what will be its displacement at the end of the first second. [16] 4. Determine the equations of motion and the natural frequencies of the two degreeof-freedom spring-mass system as shown in figure 3. [16]

5. A simple pendulum is hinged at the center of mass M as shown in figure 4. Mass M is sliding on a frictionless horizontal surface. Determine the natrural frequencies of the system. [16]

Figure 4: 6. (a) Describe the Stodola method for the calculation of the principal modes and natural frequencies of free undamped vibrating systems. (b) Describe a simplified spring-mass vibration pick-up for measuring the vertical acceleration of a moving train with a sketch and its physics. [8+8] 7. (a) Describe the classification of problems of aeroelasticity through the Collar diagram. Hence explain the phenomena of flutter and buffeting encountered in flight of an airplane. (b) Describe the problem of aileron reversal. Hence compare difrerent wing critical speeds. [8+8] 8. Describe the phenomenon of divergence of the wing and explain how the divergence speed can be increased. Make use of sketches and plots for better clarifications. [16]
