QUESTION 1

Assume you are an operation manager of a hypermarket. You are requested by the general manager to plan a family day for fifty workers. This event is scheduled to be held at the end of the year. Using a simple planning process, briefly discuss your suggested plans. Identify and state two (2) potential barriers of executing your plans. (20 marks)

QUESTION 2 a) Identify and describe four (4) managerial functions. Give a specific example of each function from your personal experience. (10 marks)

QUESTION 3 As a manager, you probably cannot make all the decisions yourself because of the nature of decisions and the complexity of decision making process. Explain the nature of decisions made by managers and describe the decision making process. (20 marks)

QUESTION 4 a) Describe the Hawthorne effect and how it changed management thinking. (5 marks) b) If an organization has a good plan and good leadership to carry out the plan, why is control necessary? Discuss. (15 marks)

Two primary formal communication channels namely, vertical and horizontal are commonly used in many organizations to enhance the communication process. Discuss the formal communication channels and identify any three (3) causes of communication barriers. (20 marks)

QUESTION 6 A marketing manager of ABC Corporation has received additional responsibilities as the company is undergoing an expansion program. He is required to manage 50 new outlets in the country. He knows that he needs to delegate some of his tasks to his supervisors in order to concentrate on the new stores and to reduce burden. However, for some reasons, he is reluctant to delegate. a) What do you think would be some reasons for his unwillingness to delegate? (8 marks) b) If you were the manager and decide to delegate, how do you go about doing it effectively? (12 marks)

QUESTION 7 Define leadership and elaborate traits theories, behavioral theories and contingency theory of leadership. In your opinion, state which theory do you support and why. (20 marks)
