(b) Discuss the importance of boiling point and freezing point of the following

PART-B

1. A 6 pole d.c generator having a lap connected armature is required to give a terminal
voltage of 240 V when supplying an armature current of 400 A. The armature has

84 slots and is driven at 700 rpm. The resistance of the armature circuit is 0.03 Ω
and the useful flux per pole is 0.03 wb. Calculate the no. of conductors per slot
and the actual value of the useful flux per pole. [16]

2. From the fundamental, derive the expression for the Torque. [16]

3. Explain the applications of a transformer and derive an equation for induced emf
in a single phase transformer. [16]

4. What is synchronous impedance and explain the tests to be conducted to measure


the same. [16]

1. Explain the characteristics of separately excited DC generator. [16]

2. A 250V, dc shunt motor on no-load runs at a speed of 1000 rpm and takes a current
of 5A. The armature and shunt field resistance are 0.2Ω and 250Ω respectively.
Calculate the speed when the motor is on-load and is taking a current of 50A. [16]

3. (a) State the various losses which take place in a transformer. On what factors
do they depend.
(b) A Single phase transformer has 100 primary and 1000 secondary turns. The
net cross sectional area of the core is 60 square centimeters. If the primary
winding is connected to a 50 HZ supply at 520 volts.

ammeter to 0-10A . The instrument constant are R = 0.09 Ω and L = 90 µH.
If the shunt is made non-inductive and the combination is correct on d.c., find

5. A moving coil instrument gives full-scale deflection with 20 mA. The resistance of
the coil is 4ΩW. It is desired to convert this instrument into an ammeter to read
up to 2 A. Find the resistance of the shunt to be connected in parallel with the
instrument. Also determine the value of series resistance for the above instrument
to read up to a voltage of 30 V. [8+8]
