Ramadan 2009 at the Islamic Society of York Region
Assalaamu-Alaykum
Alaykum Wa’rahmatullahi Wa’baraktuhu Wa’maghfiratuh!

Ramadan Mubarak to all of you and to your familie
families!

Alhamdulillah the blessed month of Ramadan is here again.. As always, Ramadan is the time when the
Masajid are full of devoted worshippers and m
many activities take place.

The Islamic Society of York Region is hosting its 10th Ramadan at its Centre on Stouffville Road. Over the
years we have launched many worthy programs that continue to this day. This booklet is your guide of
Ramadan 2009 at the ISYR.

We will be doing the following activities this Ramadan:

Taraweeh – Nightly Recitation of the Quran in the form of Salah

Narrated Abu Huraira (RA): I heard Allah's Apostle saying regarding Ramadan, "Whoever prayed at night in
it (the month of Ramadan) out of sincere Faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his
previous sins will be forgiven." (Saheeh Muslim)

At the Islamic Society of York Region, Taraweeh is engraved in our hearts as it is one of the oldest
continued programs at the ISYR. Many people show up for Taraweeh, most
of them familiar faces but many new ones as well, every year, Masha’Allah!

Imam Hafiz Abu Bakr Imran, specially invited as Imam from Libya, will be
leading Taraweeh prayers. Hafiz Munir Ahmad is assisting him.

The first night of Taraweeh started on the night of Friday, August 21, 2009,
Alhamdulillah.

ur Taraweeh Schedule (for 2009) goes like this (Insha’Allah):
Our

1. 9:15 PM – People start gathering for Taraweeh

9:30 PM is the latest we recommend you come so that you
are there when the Salah starts.

2. 9:35 PM – Isha’ Salah starts.
3. 9:40 PM – Br. Zafar Bangash makes announcements and gives a brief outline of the content
of the Surahs being recited in the night’s Salah. Taraweeh begins immediately after!

4. 10:45 PM – Taraweeh ends. The Imam makes a dua (supplication). The Witr of Isha’ Salah
are
re lead by the Imam immediately after the dua.

Some Important Notes on Taraweeh:

• Since the first half of Ramadan 2009 will be in Summer Holidays for students, we
expect more people to come to pray Taraweeh than ever before. Therefore, all
Salah are being performed the big hall instead of the regular prayer hall.

• The first 4 Raka’ of Taraweeh are led by Hafiz Munir. The Isha’ Salah, the remaining
16 Raka’ of Taraweeh and the Witr Salah are led by Hafiz Abu Bakr Imran.

• Since Taraweeh Salah is long, we sugg
suggest
est you bring a bottle of water with you in
case you get thirsty. Insha’Allah water bottles will be provided by the ISYR, but there
is no guarantee they will be available when you get there. So bring 1 or 2 just in
case.

• Restrooms, Wudu facilities, and Ch
Children’s
ildren’s Play Areas are available to service of the
attendees.

• At the ISYR, we pray 20 Raka’ in Taraweeh.

• Witr Salah is prayed after Taraweeh. In Witr, instead of the normal silent Qunoot Al-
Al
Witr, the Imam recites a beautiful heart
heart-melting dua.

Saturday Iftar Program – Come and open your fast with fellow Muslims!

To arrange iftar parties was a practice o
of the Prophet (PBUH).). There is a Hadith that states: “Any man
who supplies meal to a fasting person to perform iftar, Allah shall pardon his sins in reward for this act
and grant him salvation from the Hell
Hell-fire.” (Ibn Khizaima)

The Saturday Iftaar Program was a weekly iftar party that started at
the Islamicc Society of York Region several years ago. The program is
basically a Muslim get-together
together dinner. Come with family and
friends, pray in the mosque, and then break your fast enjoying
many multi-cultural
cultural foods while wonderful nasheeds play in the
background.

We request you come 30 minutes before iftaar time to help in
arrangements for Iftaar and to find a good place to sit and so that
we can make sure there is enough room for everyone. Jazak’Allah!

If you wish to contribute, please bring any beverages (soft drinks, etc.) desserts and vegetarian
dishes* only. Leave the rest to us. Also, you can sponsor an Iftaar. Please contact us for more details
(905 887 8913).

* Because of Halal restrictions. Please contact us for more details.

Ramadan Food Drive – Make sure your needy brothers and sisters have food to break their fast!

And they give food, inspite of their love for it (or for the love of Him), to Miskin (poor), the orphan,
and the captive, (Saying): "We feed you seeking Allah's Countenance only. We wish for f no reward, nor
thanks from you… … And their recompense shall be Paradise, and silken garments, because they were
patient. Reclining therein on raised thrones, they will see there neither the excessive heat of the sun,
nor the excessive bitter cold, and ththee shade thereof is close upon them, and the bunches of fruit
thereof will hang low within their reach. And amongst them will be passed round vessels of silver and
cups of crystal, Crystal-clear,
clear, made of silver. They will determine the measure thereof according
accor to
their wishes. (Al-Quran 76: 8-9, 12-16)
16)

It is interesting to note that, in the above verses of the Noble Quran, the deed is only explained in
one verse, while the reward is so much that it is explained in all these verses and many more.
Subhan’Allah,, such is the reward to feed a hungry person. So just imagine what the reward is in
Ramadan when the reward for every good deed is multiplied seventy times.

This Ramadan, earn reward and forgiveness by feeding a poor person and making sure that
tha he has
something for Suhur and Iftaar.

The Islamic Society of York Region holds a Ramadan Food Drive every year, collecting canned and
dry-food
food items and delivering them to needy families.

Please donate. Suggested items are: Canned Vegetables, Peas, FFruit, Rice, Flour,
Cookies, etc. Please refrain from bringing any meat products because of Halal
restrictions. Bring your donations to the ISYR.

We also need help delivering these food items to various locations across the
GTA. If you wish to volunteer, please
lease call us 905 887 8913 and give your name.
This is a great opportunity for students to complete their community service
hours.

If you can bring your car or truck it would help a lot.

(Sunday, August 30th, 2009) of
Food distribution will start, Insha’Allah, on the second Sunday (S
Ramadan to ensure we have enough food to distribute. Food distribution will be every Sunday from
10:00 AM to 12:00 NOON. Please contact us for more details.
Qiyamul-Layl – Spend the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan in sincere worship!

A narration in Muslim states: "He (PBUH) would strive [to do acts of worship] during the last ten days
of Ramadan more than he would at any other time."

Bukhari records from Abu Said that the Prophet (S) said: "Whoever makes I`tikaf with me is to make
Al-Bukhari
I'tikaf during the last ten [nights]."

Take the opportunity this Ramadan to come closer to Allah!
Spend part of the night at the house of Allah and gain
blessings, reward and forgiveness.

At the Islamic Society of York Region, w
we have been hosting
Qiyamul-Layl in the odd nights of the last ten nights of
Ramadan. Stay after Taraweeh and pray, learn, and supplicate
at a time when the world is asleep and earn unimaginable

Other Activities – Ramadan brings happiness to the ISYR and its community!

We have some other activities going on at the Islamic Society of York Region:

• We will be collecting Zakah as well as Sadaqa Al-Fitr ($5.00 Per Person)
during Ramadan. There are clearly marked boxes where you can put your
money in and Insha’Allah they will reach their appropriate places.

• As it is Ramadan, more people come to pray the Jumuah Salah, so we
advise that you come early to find a good parking spot and space inside the
mosque. The Jumuah Salah will be held in the big hall due to the large
number of people attending.
• This Ramadan, gain seventy times the reward by donating to the ISYR. We
have just opened a new ISYR location in Newmarket. There is huge debt
outstanding and there is much work to be done. Remember, if you help
build a House of Allah on Earth, Allah will build a house for you in Paradise.
Please donate generously! There are many ways to donate, by cheque,
money order or cash! Tax
Tax-deductible receipt will be issued for each
donation.

Khatmul-Quran Night – Come and listen to a heart
heart-melting
ting recitation of the last Juz of the Quran!

Quran Night 2009 will be on Friday, September 18th, 2009 (Night of Ramadan 29th, 1430
Khatmul-Quran
AH), Insha’Allah.

Khatmul-Quran
Quran Nights have always been joyous occasions at the ISYR, and
you should expect no less this year. Insha’Allah we will begin as normal. After
the Salat and the long, beautiful, heart
heart-melting
melting duas are completed,
completed
refreshments are served.

On this night the turnout is exceptionally large. So please come early so you
can find a good parking spot and a good place inside the mosque and help us
arrange everything properly. Our goal is to make sure that everyone makes
the most of this night.

Eid Al-Fitr – Ramadan is incomplete without this joyous day!

Anas (RA), a companion of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) reported that when the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)
migrated from Makkah to Madinah, the people of Madinah used to have two festivals. On those two days they
had carnivals and festivity. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) asked the Ansar (the Muslims of Madinah) about it.
They replied that before Islam they used to have carnivals on those two joyous days. The Prophet Muhammad
(PBUH) told them: 'Instead of those two days, Allah has appointed two other days which are better, the
days of Eid-al-Fitr and Eid-al-Adha.'
Adha.' (Hadith)

Fitr is expected to be on Sunday, September 20th, but please go to

Muslims! Ma’assalaamu-Alaykum
