Muslims blow up another Church in Nigeria

monstrous. Instead they run this kind of nonsense.

Eleven dead, 30 injured in Nigeria church attack Bangkok Post, November 25, 2012 (hat tipto Armaros) Two suicide attacks on a church in an army barracks in the northern Nigerian town of Jaji on Sunday left eleven people dead and 30 injured, the army said. Eleven people, mostly worshippers, were killed while 30 are in the hospitals with various degrees of injuries, national army spokesman Brigadier General Bola Koleosho told AFP. A military officer who did not want to be named said the Protestant church was hit by two explosions. The first blast caused no casualties and curious worshippers gathered around the scene looking at the debris and that was when the second blast happened, he said. Jaji lies some 30 kilometres (20 miles) from the state capital Kaduna city which has been hit in the past by deadly attacks blamed on the Islamist sect Boko Haram. The group has often targeted churches in its bloody insurgency, as well as police and other symbols of the establishment in Nigeria, Africas most populous country which is divided between a mainly Muslim north and a predominantly Christian south. The state-run National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said rescuers have been

alerted to an explosion at a military formation in Kaduna state today and likely at a worship centre Although no group has claimed responsibility for Sundays church blast, the incident was similar to previous attacks blamed on the Islamist extremist group. Last month, at least 10 people were killed and 145 wounded in a suicide church bombing and reprisal violence in Kaduna. Suicide bombings at three churches in June that were claimed by Boko Haram sparked reprisal violence by Christian mobs who killed dozens of their Muslim neighbors, burning some of their victims bodies. Muslim groups also formed mobs and killed several Christians. Apart from churches, security forces, government officials, and other symbols of authority have been targeted by Boko Haram fighters. The groups insurgency in northern and central Nigeria is believed to have left some 3,000 people dead since 2009, including killings by the security forces. Boko Haram has claimed to be seeking an Islamic state in Nigeria, Africas largest oil producer.

Hi Dear Raj, since your heart is so saddened by the Boko guys why dont you cheer up by writing an article on Israelist too, killing more than 300 Muslim women and children and injuring over 2000 in the recent attacks on poor Ghazians, on whom they curb food supplies and medicines and steal their land by settlements? In reference to Boko guys, you asserted, It shames me that I am part of a society that not only sanctions this savagery, but demonizes and destroys those of us who speak against it. This will not end well, folks. The horror is unspeakable, the silence is monstrous. So, what do you mean by This will not end well, folks? Of course, by all means, those groups who kill, maim and destroy houses of worship should be rooted and destroyed. But whose creation is the Nigerian Taliban? Besides Churches they even bomb Mosques and kill their Muslim leaders!! Yes, they should be uprooted and destroyed utterly as they have gone against The Quran! The Boko Haram is a terrorist group and labelled by the CNN, a biased Network, as Islamist terrorist group when no Islamic country condones their actions or recognizes them! Finally, your sad heart should rest at peace now because a good number of Muslims die on daily bases all over the world by the hands of your sympathetic mentors! Regards

Hey Plum Dude! Your way of starting this discussion is funny. Let me test your

Yes, Israelists have killed many muslims BUT what is the reason? When USA killed it was oil, when Israel did, it was political reason. BUT when muslims kill, it is religious reason. Thats why terrorism is associated with religion Islam. Let us see what Zionists have done. Death of 300 and injury of 2000 is negligible compared to what I tell you now. Which Zionist led to Algerian civil war of 1990 1998 leading to murder of 0.20 million innocent civilians ? Which Zionist led to Libyan Chad war of 1978 1987 leading to murder of 8.5 thousand troops ? Which Zionist led to Chad civil war of 2005 2009 leading to murder of 0.35 million innocent civilians ? 1.70 millions were wounded and many refugees from Sudan

and Africa as well. Which Zionist led to Sudan conflict of 1950 2005 leading to murder of 2.60 million innocent civilians displacing 5 million ? Which Zionist led to Lebanese civil war of 1975 1990 leading to murder of 0.23 million innocent civilians, wounding a million and displacing 0.35 million ? Which Zionist led to Syrian civil war of 1982 leading to murder of 0.40 million innocent civilians and in 2012 leading to another 43,192 casualties ? Which Zionist led to Jordan civil war of Black September 1970 leading to murder of 10 thousand innocent civilians ? million innocent civilians and displacing 2 million others ? Which Zionist led to Tajikistan conflict of 1992 1997 leading to murder of 50,000 innocent civilians displacing 0.70 million ? Which Zionist led to Bangladesh Pakistan war of 1971 1974 leading to murder of 1.50 million innocent civilians ? Which Zionist led to Indonesian war of 1965 1966 leading to murder of 0.40 million innocent civilians ? Which Zionist led to East Timor war of 1975 1999 leading to murder of 200 thousand innocent civilians ? Which Zionist led to Muanmar Gaddafi of 2011 leading to murder of 10,000 innocent civilians ? If we add up murders by Muslims on Muslims, it is more than population of Zionists themselves. Only 100,000 Arabs are killed by Israel so far. This is negligible compared to Muslim Muslim wars. All the casualties by Israel were merely for self defense. The Arabs wanted to wipe out Israel from world map and exterminate Jews. REALITY Islam is a violent religion. In muslim nations, NON muslims dont exist and hence muslims kill muslims there. Quran 2:216 Qital (massacre in the cause of God) is ordained for you (Muslims), though

you dislike it. But it is possible that you dislike a thing which is good for you, and like a thing which is bad for you. But God knows, and you know not. Quran 3:142 Did ye think that ye would enter Heaven without Allah testing those of you who fought hard for GOD (i.e., Jihad) and remained steadfast? So, no terrorist person be it Taliban, Al Qaeda etc. violates Quran. Terrorism is an act for GOD as per Quran 2:216. So, all muslim clerics who do not recoognize Taliban etc. is same as muslims not recognizing respective Quranic verses. Terrorism is every muslims religious duty as per Quran 2:216 and 3:142 followed by 164 other verses legalizing terrorism. You know why Hitler raged a World War ? Because all muslims supported him. Had no muslim supported Hitler, world war would not have happened at all. Hitler was highly peaceful when he was a Christian. BUT when he converted to Islam, he became a tyrant ordering massacre of 10 million innocent Jews. Hitlers Mein Kampf is translated as My Jihad. When Muslims kill millions of innocent Jews that is termed worship of Allah and when Jews fight for self defense, that is oppression. All this proves that NO Muslim is interested to resolve the Arab Israel conflict. Rather, they are exploiting the situation to promote their political agenda massacre of innocents.

ALL Mohammedans are psychopathic; some more deranged than others, while others in the Closet practicing TAQIYAH: LYING IN ISLAM. Taqiyah is sanctioned by the Sunni Muslim medieval theologian, Abu Hmed Mohammad ibn Mohammad al-Ghazzl of the Shafi school. Its use is clearly much wider than saving of lives. The best type of Taqiyah according to some authorities is Tawriah. In Tawriah, a kind of Delphic practice, the speaker makes the mark believe that they are agreeing with them through ambiguity, whereas in fact they may be saying the opposite. For example, the slogan Islam is the religion of peace has an ambiguous meaning, since for Muslims, the peace is to be found only through surrender to Allah. MUSLIM RAPE JIHAD Why as a Muslim and a mother I believe its so damaging to hide from the truth about Asian sex gangs By YASMIN ALIBHAI BROWN PUBLISHED: 00:52 GMT, 21 November 2012 | UPDATED: 08:21 GMT, 23 November 2012

A bleak, stomach-turning report on child sex abuse by gangs was published yesterday by the Office of the Childrens Commission. It recounts how, between 2010 and 2011, more than 2,500 children mostly girls were groomed, repeatedly violated, sold, beaten and terrorised. Thousands more remain invisible and unheard. The report concludes that agencies that should have helped them didnt hear their stories or look after them as they should have. The Childrens Commission has published a report on child sex abuse by gangs But, ironically, the report writers, too, try hard to side-step some difficult facts and even warn the rest of us from going where they have chosen not to tread. Here is what Sue Berelowitz, the Deputy Childrens Commissioner who led the inquiry, has to say: Perpetrators come from all ethnic groups, and so do their victims contrary to what some may wish to believe. Yes, we know they come from all backgrounds. But that rather cutting second line is directed at people like me who believe that in some British cities especially in the North of England circles of sexual hell for young girls are run by gangs of Muslim men (most of Pakistani or Bangladeshi heritage) who mostly prey on white girls. The inquiry was led by Deputy Childrens Commissioner Sue Berelowitz To generalise their crimes, and lump them in with all the other abusers across the country, is to deny what the victims of these men and their families are saying about the abuse that has gone on.

As an Asian woman, feminist, mother, Muslim and lifelong anti-racist, I cannot meekly accept Ms Berelowitzs directive. We need clear and honest figures to show how race and ethnicity are linked to these unspeakable crimes. After all, we have ethnic details for burglaries, stop-and-search, conviction rates and prison sentencing. Anti-racists base their campaigns on such information. So why the squeamishness about gang sex exploitation? I think it is because like a number of police officers and social workers who have been presented with such evidence in the past the committee in charge of the report are nervous of causing offence to community leaders, of being thought racists. Perhaps they fear the information will be used by the BNP or English Defence League to whip up hatred. It is misplaced sensitivity. Committed racists will behave as they wish: we cannot let that determine what the public can or cannot know. Of course the majority of sex abusers are white because the majority of the population is white. Blond paedophile Jimmy Savile did not hail from Pakistan, but was home-grown. The report points out that 28 per cent of the victims they found were of black and Asian background. But it doesnt state what it should have: that some of the worst long-term abuse is carried out by mainly British Pakistani men targeting lost young white girls, often from troubled or poor families. A 2010 police intelligence report stated there was a significant problem

with gangs of Asian males, most of them Muslim, exploiting young white females. The children are neglected and hungry for love. The men offer treats, car rides and kebabs, then drugs and alcohol; and then they corrupt them. Even more tragically, when teachers and doctors express concern, too many in social services and the police dismiss the girls as promiscuous, available and not worth their attention and care. Of course, the kind of entrapment, grooming and abuse being described here is carried out by white gangs, too, and they are as hateful and bestial as their Asian counterparts. But with the latter, there has been for too long a suppression of the whole truth. The reason I feel compelled to write about these particular groomers and rapists is because I am Asian, and I know how their repugnant activities are rebounding on all of us and on good Asian men. The internet is rife with horrifying stories about such gangs. They are a mix of fact and fiction. More dangerously still, the British public is starting to think that we Asians hide and excuse the child rapists and, that way, we all become sinners. Every Asian and Muslim I know, including some imams, want these monsters exposed, named and put away. But not all of them, I admit, want to delve deeper and confront some of the values that drive such men to prey on white females.

This is where it gets tricky. It is easy to loathe the abusers, but much harder to ask what it is about some Asian cultural assumptions that make the paedophiles feel no guilt or shame about what they do. Mohammed Shafiq, director of the Lancashire-based Ramadhan Foundation, a charity working for ethnic harmony, has warned: The police are over-cautious because they fear being branded racist Mohammed Shafiq, chief executive of the Ramadhan Foundation, a brave and principled man, is one of the few to examine and question these underlying attitudes. He acknowledges that to some Muslim men, white females are thought easy game, asking for it, while those mens wives or girlfriends are hyper-protected. Many abusers are sexually frustrated and cannot relate to women except as objects of one kind or another. For this new report to shy away from this vital dimension is cowardly and, in its way, another betrayal of the victims. One of these poor girls contacted me after hearing me a few times on a London radio show on which I was talking about gangs of Asian men in Rochdale. She and I met in a small cafe in the summer. She is now 16, but looks much younger, and is painfully thin. A charity is looking after her. A British Pakistani man who became her pimp (she had to call him

Master) found her outside a chip shop, paid for a big portion of fries, took her for a drive and violently raped her in the back of the car that same night. She was 14, living with a mother who was an alcoholic and on benefits, and a young half-brother. Abusers: The men who took part in a child sex ring which exploited vulnerable teenage girls Abdul Rauf, Hamid Safi, Mohammed Sajid and Abdul Aziz. Abdul Qayyum, Adil Khan, Mohammed Amin and Kabeer Hassan. Afterwards, the man gave her a 20 note. She had never had so much cash in her hand. And so it went on. She was passed from man to man, was infected with a sexually transmitted disease, then told her teacher, who took her to a clinic and tried to get her to tell the police. But the girl was too scared to do that. The men, by then, were violent and threatened her. She wanted to meet me, she said, to ask why Asian men were like animals a question that felt like a stab through my heart. They are not, I told her; only a few but those few were very bad. She will never believe me. And those who came to learn what happened to her now think as she does. For her sake, and for the sake of others like her, the Childrens Commission report needed to attend to specifics, and not vague generalities about perpetrators. It does, in fact, acknowledge that there is more than one type of

It does, in fact, acknowledge that there is more than one type of perpetrator, model and approach. But then it backs off from giving us details about the different perpetrators, models and approaches, because, I believe, that would mean scrutinising Asian gangs (which some police forces have found commit most sexual crimes against girls in some areas). Frankly, I think its deplorable that the panel chosen to collate this report was almost all white. If theyd had assertive and scrupulous Asian members, perhaps we would have got a more full and truthful document. I would never betray British Asians and Muslims, or portray them unfairly. They are my people. But breaking the taboo of silence that surrounds the exploitation by Asian men of white girls is a duty we insiders must not shirk. These girls are someones child, grandchild, sister, niece. They are our daughters, too and we owe them more than we do their rapists. Saturday, 17 March 2012 Muslim Rape Epidemic in Europe In March this year, native Dutch residents of the city of Utrecht rioted to protest against harassment by Muslim youths and government inaction to stop this. The Dutch authorities immediately suppressed the riots by sealing off the area and installing surveillance cameras to control Dutch non-Muslims, but they have done virtually nothing to address the underlying problem of Muslim violence. And this is far from unique to the Netherlands.

Sweden experienced a quadrupling in the number of rape charges in the space of a single generation. Yet Swedens largest newspaper Aftonbladet recently indicated that the spike in rape numbers was due to the warm weather, which would presumably mean that these rapes are caused by global warming. The fact that many of the suspects have a Muslim background is purely coincidental, no doubt. The Dutch Crown Prince Willem-Alexander is worried about the sharp tone of the debate surrounding Muslim immigration, and reminds his countrymen that speech is silver, silence is golden. Apparently, the rest of the Dutch political class shares this view, relieved that Pim Fortuyn was silenced through murder and Ayaan Hirsi Ali was driven out of the country. I hear some observers say that the political elites in Western Europe are powerless to stop Jihad street violence. But they are extremely aggressive in suppressing criticism of continued Muslim immigration, which indicates that they are not powerless, they are actively hostile to native non-Muslims. Its time Europeans realize that, and act accordingly. This came from the Dutch press: Dozens of boys and girls have been systematically abused, intimidated and molested by a group of older boys in the Utrecht neighbourhood of Overvecht for almost a year, the Telegraaf reports. Municipal council member Bouchra Dibi (Labour PvdA) investigated the incidents taking place at the playground near the Neckardreef in Overvecht.

Children aged 8, 9 and 10 were dragged into the bushes and coerced into performing sexual acts on boys a few years older. Most of the children involved are of Moroccan background, the newspaper reports. The municipal council member told the Telegraaf that the problems are not being addressed. This has been going on for almost a year. People just talk and talk and talk. And nothing is done, she said. Social workers, police and the municipality do not know how to approach the parents, Dibi says. These sorts of things are taboo to talk about in the Moroccan community. Utrecht Mayor Annie Brouwer-Korf (PvdA) acknowledges that there have been problems among children since the end of last year. Intimidation, threats and fights, and, since the beginning of this year we have seen signals of sexual abuse. A report of sexual molestation by children has been passed on to the public prosecution department, the mayor says. Brouwer says it is difficult to get an idea of how widespread the abuses are because there is no concrete information on suspects, victims and locations. Council member Dibi says this is mainly due to parents hesitance to report incidents. Parents do not dare say anything because they are afraid of the perpetrators. There is a great deal of fear. That is why they dont always report these things. Meanwhile the Dutch Labour Party (PvdA) tries to silence Ehsan Jami, a Muslim apostate who is a local Labour politician in LeidschendamVoorburg. The 22 year old Jami intends to establish an international organization of ex-Muslims. An internal memo sent to Labour parliamentarians and ministers, shows that the party fears that Jamis

campaign will cause it electoral damage and enrage Muslims. The party wants Jami to consider the fact that his initiative will go down badly with the PvdAs immigrant following. The Dutch press revealed that Jami received hate mail from PvdA executives. Task Force Europa: First there were the Danish cartoons riots, death threats and hatred, Then the Islamist riots in Paris that burned for days, now Dutch children are being raped by these Islamic Nazi thugs? Europe and the rest of Western Civilization needs to grow a spine, and sharpish! Even Americas war on terrorism is bogging down due to political correctness and the injection of multiculturalism into their society. Modern day liberalism will be the death of us all since the Islamofascists consider this strain of liberalism as weakness, appeasement and cowardice. The Islamofascist bloodthirst for power and worldwide domination will only grow in the face of this liberal cowardice. 0 Reply 0 Rate This

Hi HD Dude, Yes it is true that every Muslim is ordered to fight in defense of religion of Islam. But only for Islam and injustices. Quran doesnt allow Muslims to fight each other or for selfish gains, that would be against the Quran! Inter State as well as those of State to State wars have always occurred from time immemorial, among nations of whatsoever beliefs. Remember the Indo China War? Also, kindly, provide references/link to the above, one sided alleges, which you forgot to give. Regards Plum 0 Reply 0 Rate This

Violence Question: Does the Quran really contain dozens of verses promoting violence? Summary Answer: The Quran contains at least 109 verses that call Muslims to war with nonbelievers for the sake of Islamic rule. Some are quite graphic, with commands to chop off heads and fingers and kill infidels wherever they may be hiding. Muslims who do not join the fight are called hypocrites and warned that Allah will send them to Hell if they do not join the slaughter. Unlike nearly all of the Old Testament verses of violence, the verses of violence in the Quran are mostly open-ended, meaning that they are not restrained by the historical context of the surrounding text. They are part of the eternal, unchanging word of Allah, and just as relevant or subjective as anything else in the Quran. Most of todays Muslims exercise a personal choice to interpret their holy books many calls to violence according to what their own moral preconceptions find justificable. Apologists cater to their preferences with tenuous arguments that gloss over historical fact and generally do not stand up to scrutiny. Still, it is important to note that the problem is not bad people, but bad ideology.

Unfortunately, there are very few verses of tolerance and peace to abrogate or even balance out the many that call for nonbelievers to be fought and subdued until they either accept humiliation, convert to Islam, or are killed. Muhammads own martial legacy and that of his companions along with the remarkable stress on violence found in the Quran have produced a trail of blood and tears across world history. The Quran: Quran (2:191-193) And slay them wherever ye find them, and drive them out of the places whence they drove you out, for persecution [of Muslims] is worse than slaughter [of nonbelievers] but if they desist, then lo! Allah is forgiving and merciful. And fight them until persecution is no more, and religion is for Allah. The historical context of this passage is not defensive warfare, since Muhammad and his Muslims had just relocated to Medina and were not under attack by their Meccan adversaries. In fact, the verses urge offensive warfare, in that Muslims are to drive Meccans out of their own city (which they later did). The use of the word persecution by some Muslim translators is thus disingenuous (the actual Muslim words for persecution idtihad and oppression a variation of z-l-m do not appear in the verse). The actual Arabic comes from fitna which can mean disbelief, or the disorder that results from unbelief or temptation. Taken as a whole, the context makes clear that violence is being authorized until religion is for Allah ie. unbelievers desist in their unbelief.

Quran (2:244) Then fight in the cause of Allah, and know that Allah Heareth and knoweth all things. Quran (2:216) Fighting is prescribed for you, and ye dislike it. But it is possible that ye dislike a thing which is good for you, and that ye love a thing which is bad for you. But Allah knoweth, and ye know not. Not only does this verse establish that violence can be virtuous, but it also contradicts the myth that fighting is intended only in self-defense, since the audience was obviously not under attack at the time. From the Hadith, we know that this verse was narrated at a time that Muhammad was actually trying to motivate his people into raiding merchant caravans for loot. Quran (3:56) As to those who reject faith, I will punish them with terrible agony in this world and in the Hereafter, nor will they have anyone to help. Quran (3:151) Soon shall We cast terror into the hearts of the Unbelievers, for that they joined companions with Allah, for which He had sent no authority. This speaks directly of polytheists, yet it also includes Christians, since they believe in the Trinity (ie. what Muhammad incorrectly believed to be joining companions to Allah). Quran (4:74) Let those fight in the way of Allah who sell the life of this world for the other. Whoso fighteth in the way of Allah, be he slain or be he victorious, on him We shall bestow

a vast reward. The martyrs of Islam are unlike the early Christians, led meekly to the slaughter. These Muslims are killed in battle, as they attempt to inflict death and destruction for the cause of Allah. Here is the theological basis for todays suicide bombers. Quran (4:76) Those who believe fight in the cause of Allah Quran (4:89) They but wish that ye should reject Faith, as they do, and thus be on the same footing (as they): But take not friends from their ranks until they flee in the way of Allah (From what is forbidden). But if they turn renegades, seize them and slay them wherever ye find them; and (in any case) take no friends or helpers from their ranks. Quran (4:95) Not equal are those believers who sit (at home) and receive no hurt, and those who strive and fight in the cause of Allah with their goods and their persons. Allah hath granted a grade higher to those who strive and fight with their goods and persons than to those who sit (at home). Unto all (in Faith) Hath Allah promised good: But those who strive and fight Hath He distinguished above those who sit (at home) by a special reward,- This passage criticizes peaceful Muslims who do not join in the violence, letting them know that they are less worthy in Allahs eyes. It also demolishes the modern myth that Jihad doesnt mean holy war in the Quran, but rather a spiritual struggle. Not only is the Arabic word used in this passage, but it is clearly not referring to anything spiritual,

since the physically disabled are given exemption. (The Hadith reveals the context of the passage to be in response to a blind mans protest that he is unable to engage in Jihad and this is reflected in other translations of the verse). Quran (4:104) And be not weak hearted in pursuit of the enemy; if you suffer pain, then surely they (too) suffer pain as you suffer pain Is pursuing an injured and retreating enemy really an act of self-defense? Quran (5:33) The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His messenger and strive to make mischief in the land is only this, that they should be murdered or crucified or their hands and their feet should be cut off on opposite sides or they should be imprisoned; this shall be as a disgrace for them in this world, and in the hereafter they shall have a grievous chastisement Quran (8:12) I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them No reasonable person would interpret this to mean a spiritual struggle. Quran (8:15) O ye who believe! When ye meet those who disbelieve in battle, turn not your backs to them. (16)Whoso on that day turneth his back to them, unless maneuvering for battle or intent to join a company, he truly hath incurred wrath from Allah, and his habitation will be hell, a hapless journeys

end. Quran (8:39) And fight with them until there is no more fitna (disorder, unbelief) and religion should be only for Allah Some translations interpret fitna as persecution, but the traditional understanding of this word is not supported by the historical context (See notes for 2:293, also). The Meccans were simply refusing Muhammad access to their city during Haj. Other Muslims were allowed to travel there just not as an armed group, since Muhammad had declared war on Mecca prior to his eviction. The Meccans were also acting in defense of their religion, since it was Muhammads intention to destroy their idols and establish Islam by force (which he later did). Hence the critical part of this verse is to fight until religion is only for Allah, meaning that the true justification of violence was the unbelief of the opposition. According to the Sira (Ibn Ishaq/Hisham 324) Muhammad further explains that Allah must have no rivals. Quran (8:57) If thou comest on them in the war, deal with them so as to strike fear in those who are behind them, that haply they may remember. Quran (8:59-60) And let not those who disbelieve suppose that they can outstrip (Allahs Purpose). Lo! they cannot escape. Make ready for them all thou canst of (armed) force and of horses tethered, that thereby ye may dismay the enemy of Allah and your enemy.

Quran (8:65) O Prophet, exhort the believers to fight Quran (9:5) So when the sacred months have passed away, then slay the idolaters wherever you find them, and take them captive and besiege them and lie in wait for them in every ambush, then if they repent and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate, leave their way free to them. According to this verse, the best way of staying safe from Muslim violence is to convert to Islam (prayer (salat) and the poor tax (zakat) are among the religions Five Pillars). This popular claim that the Quran only inspires violence within the context of self-defense is seriously challenged by this passage as well, since the Muslims to whom it was written were obviously not under attack. Had they been, then there would have been no waiting period (earlier verses make it a duty for Muslims to fight in selfdefense, even during the sacred months). Quran (9:14) Fight them, Allah will punish them by your hands and bring them to disgrace Quran (9:20) Those who believe, and have left their homes and striven with their wealth and their lives in Allahs way are of much greater worth in Allahs sight. These are they who are triumphant. The Arabic word interpreted as striving in this verse is the same root as Jihad. The context is obviously holy war. Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued. People of the Book refers to Christians and Jews. According to this verse, they are to be violently subjugated, with the sole justification being their religious status. This was one of the final revelations from Allah and it set in motion the tenacious military expansion, in which Muhammads companions managed to conquer two-thirds of the Christian world in the next 100 years. Islam is intended to dominate all other people and faiths. Quran (9:30) And the Jews say: Ezra is the son of Allah; and the Christians say: The Messiah is the son of Allah; these are the words of their mouths; they imitate the saying of those who disbelieved before; may Allah destroy them; how they are turned away! Quran (9:38-39) O ye who believe! what is the matter with you, that, when ye are asked to go forth in the cause of Allah, ye cling heavily to the earth? Do ye prefer the life of this world to the Hereafter? But little is the comfort of this life, as compared with the Hereafter. Unless ye go forth, He will punish you with a grievous penalty, and put others in your place. This is a warning to those who refuse to fight, that they will be punished with Hell.

Quran (9:41) Go forth, light-armed and heavy-armed, and strive with your wealth and your lives in the way of Allah! That is best for you if ye but knew. See also the verse that follows (9:42) If there had been immediate gain (in sight), and the journey easy, they would (all) without doubt have followed thee, but the distance was long, (and weighed) on them This contradicts the myth that Muslims are to fight only in selfdefense, since the wording implies that battle will be waged a long distance from home (in another country and on Christian soil, in this case, according to the historians). Quran (9:73) O Prophet! strive hard against the unbelievers and the hypocrites and be unyielding to them; and their abode is hell, and evil is the destination. Dehumanizing those who reject Islam, by reminding Muslims that they are merely firewood for Hell, makes it easier to justify slaughter. It also explains why todays devout Muslims have little regard for those outside the faith. Quran (9:88) But the Messenger, and those who believe with him, strive and fight with their wealth and their persons: for them are (all) good things: and it is they who will prosper. Quran (9:111) Allah hath purchased of the believers their persons and their goods; for theirs (in return) is the garden (of Paradise): they fight in His cause, and slay and are slain: a promise binding on Him in truth, through the Law, the Gospel, and the Quran: and who is more faithful to his covenant than

Allah? then rejoice in the bargain which ye have concluded: that is the achievement supreme. Quran (9:123) O you who believe! fight those of the unbelievers who are near to you and let them find in you hardness. Quran (17:16) And when We wish to destroy a town, We send Our commandment to the people of it who lead easy lives, but they transgress therein; thus the word proves true against it, so We destroy it with utter destruction. Note that the crime is moral transgression, and the punishment is utter destruction. (Before ordering the 9/11 attacks, Osama bin Laden first issued Americans an invitation to Islam). Quran (18:65-81) This parable lays the theological groundwork for honor killings, in which a family member is murdered because they brought shame to the family, either through apostasy or perceived moral indiscretion. The story (which is not found in any Jewish or Christian source) tells of Moses encountering a man with special knowledge who does things which dont seem to make sense on the surface, but are then justified according to later explanation. One such action is to murder a youth for no apparent reason (74). However, the wise man later explains that it was feared that the boy would grieve his parents by disobedience and ingratitude. He was killed so that Allah could provide them a better son. (Note: This is one reason why honor killing is sanctioned by Sharia.

Reliance of the Traveler (Umdat al-Saliq) says that punishment for murder is not applicable when a parent or grandparent kills their offspring (o.1.1-2).) Quran (21:44) We gave the good things of this life to these men and their fathers until the period grew long for them; See they not that We gradually reduce the land (in their control) from its outlying borders? Is it then they who will win? Quran (25:52) Therefore listen not to the Unbelievers, but strive against them with the utmost strenuousness Strive against is Jihad obviously not in the personal context. Its also significant to point out that this is a Meccan verse. Quran (33:60-62) If the hypocrites, and those in whose hearts is a disease, and the alarmists in the city do not cease, We verily shall urge thee on against them, then they will be your neighbors in it but a little while. Accursed, they will be seized wherever found and slain with a (fierce) slaughter. This passage sanctions the slaughter (rendered merciless and horrible murder in other translations) against three groups: Hypocrites (Muslims who refuse to fight in the way of Allah (3:167) and hence dont act as Muslims should), those with diseased hearts (which include Jews and Christians 5:51-52), and alarmists or agitators who include those who merely speak out against Islam, according to Muhammads biographers. It is worth noting that the victims are to be sought out by Muslims, which is what todays terrorists do. If this

passage is meant merely to apply to the city of Medina, then it is unclear why it is included in Allahs eternal word to Muslim generations. Quran (47:3-4) Those who reject Allah follow vanities, while those who believe follow the truth from their lord. Thus does Allah set forth form men their lessons by similitude. Therefore when you meet in battle those who disbelieve, then smite the necks until when you have overcome them, then make (them) prisoners, Those who reject Allah are to be subdued in battle. The verse goes on to say the only reason Allah doesnt do the dirty work himself is in order to to test the faithfulness of Muslims. Those who kill pass the test. But if it had been Allahs Will, He could certainly have exacted retribution from them (Himself); but (He lets you fight) in order to test you, some with others. But those who are slain in the Way of Allah,- He will never let their deeds be lost. Jihad means spiritual struggle. Is so, then why are the blind, lame and sick exempted? This verse also says that those who do not fight will suffer torment in hell. Quran (48:29) Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. And those with him are hard (ruthless) against the disbelievers and merciful among themselves Islam is not about treating everyone equally. There are two very distinct standards that are applied based on religious status. Also the word used for hard or ruthless in this verse shares the same root as the word translated as painful or severe in verse 16. Quran (61:4) Surely Allah loves those who fight in His way Religion of Peace, indeed! This is followed by (61:9): He it is who has sent His Messenger (Mohammed) with guidance and the religion of truth (Islam) to make it victorious over all religions even though the infidels may resist. Quran (61:10-12) O ye who believe! He will forgive you your sins, and admit you to Gardens beneath which Rivers flow, and to beautiful mansions in Gardens of Eternity. This verse was given in battle. It uses the Arabic word, Jihad. the hypocrites, and be stern with them. Hell will be their home, a hapless journeys end. The root word of Jihad is used again here. The context is clearly holy war, and the scope of violence is broadened to include hypocrites those who call themselves Muslims but do not act as such. From the Hadith: Bukhari (52:177) Allahs Apostle said, The Hour will not be established until you fight with the Jews, and the stone behind which a Jew will be hiding will say. O Muslim! There is a Jew hiding behind me, so kill him. Bukhari (52:256) The Prophet was asked whether it was permissible to attack the pagan warriors at night with the probability of exposing their women and children to danger. The Prophet replied, They (i.e. women and children) are from them (i.e. pagans). In this command, Muhammad establishes that it is permissible to kill non-combatants in the process of killing a perceived enemy. This provides justification for the many Islamic terror bombings. Bukhari (52:220) Allahs Apostle said I have been made victorious with terror Abu Dawud (14:2526) The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: Three things are the roots of faith: to refrain from (killing) a person who utters, There is no god but Allah and not to declare him unbeliever whatever sin he commits, and not to

And if they say so, pray like our prayers, face our Qibla and slaughter as we slaughter, then their blood and property will be sacred to us and we will not interfere with them except legally. Muslim (1:30) The Messenger of Allah said: I have been commanded to fight against people so long as they do not declare that there is no god but Allah. Muslim (1:149) Abu Dharr reported: I said: Messenger of Allah, which of the deeds is the best? He (the Holy Prophet) replied: Belief in Allah and Jihad in His cause Muslim (20:4645) He (the Messenger of Allah) did that and said: There is another act which elevates the position of a man in Paradise to a grade one hundred (higher), and the elevation between one grade and the other is equal to the height of the heaven from the earth. He (Abu Said) said: What is that act? He replied: Jihad in the way of Allah! Jihad in the way of Allah! to three courses of action. If they respond to any one of these, you also accept it and withhold yourself from doing them any harm. Invite them to (accept) Islam; if they respond to you, accept it from them and desist from fighting against them If they refuse to accept Islam, demand from them the Jizya. If they agree to pay, accept it from them and hold off your hands. If they refuse to pay the tax, seek Allahs help and fight them. Tabari 7:97 The morning after the murder of Ashraf, the Prophet declared, Kill any Jew who falls under your power. Ashraf was a poet, killed by Muhammads men because he insulted Islam. Here, Muhammad widens the scope of his orders to kill. An innocent Jewish businessman was then slain by his Muslim partner, merely for being non-Muslim. Tabari 9:69 Killing Unbelievers is a small matter to us The words of Muhammad, prophet of Islam. Tabari 17:187 By God, our religion (din) from which we have departed is better and more correct than that which these people follow. Ibn Ishaq/Hisham 327: Allah said, A prophet must slaughter before collecting captives. A slaughtered enemy is driven from the land. Muhammad, you craved the desires of this world, its goods and the ransom captives would bring. But Allah desires killing them to manifest the religion. Ibn Ishaq/Hisham 990: Lest anyone think that cutting off someones head while screaming Allah Akbar! is a modern creation, here is an account of that very practice under Muhammad, who seems to approve. Ibn Ishaq/Hisham 992: Fight everyone in the way of Allah and kill those who disbelieve in Allah. Muhammads instructions to his men prior to a military raid. Additional Notes: Other than the fact that Muslims havent killed every nonMuslim under their domain, there is very little else that they can point to as proof that theirs is a peaceful, tolerant religion. Where Islam is dominant (as in the Middle East and Pakistan) religious minorities suffer brutal persecution with little resistance. Where Islam is in the minority (as in Thailand, the Philippines and Europe) there is the threat of violence if Muslim demands are not met. Either situation seems to provide a justification for religious terrorism, which is persistent and endemic to Islamic fundamentalism. The reasons are obvious and begin with the Quran. Few verses

of Islams most sacred text can be construed to fit the contemporary virtues of religious tolerance and universal brotherhood. Those that do are earlier Meccan verses which are obviously abrogated by later ones. This is why Muslim apologists speak of the risks of trying to interpret the Quran without their assistance even while claiming that it is a perfect book. Far from being mere history or theological construct, the violent verses of the Quran have played a key role in very real massacre and genocide. This includes the brutal slaughter of tens of millions of Hindus for five centuries beginning around 1000 AD with Mahmud of Ghaznis bloody conquest. Both he and the later Tamerlane (Islams Genghis Khan) slaughtered an untold number merely for defending their temples from destruction. Buddhism was very nearly wiped off the Indian subcontinent. Judaism and Christianity met the same fate (albeit more slowly) in areas conquered by Muslim armies, including the Middle East, North Africa and parts of Europe, including todays Turkey. Zoroastrianism, the ancient religion of a proud Persian people is despised by Muslims and barely survives in modern Iran. So ingrained is violence in the religion that Islam has never really stopped being at war, either with other religions or with itself. Muhammad was a military leader, laying siege to towns,

massacring the men, raping their women, enslaving their children, and taking the property of others as his own. On several occasions he rejected offers of surrender from the besieged inhabitants and even butchered captives. He actually inspired his followers to battle when they did not feel it was right to fight, promising them slaves and booty if they did and threatening them with Hell if they did not. Muhammad allowed his men to rape traumatized women captured in battle, usually on the very day their husbands and family members were slaughtered. It is important to emphasize that, for the most part, Muslim armies waged aggressive campaigns, and the religions most dramatic military conquests were made by the actual companions of Muhammad in the decades following his death. The early Islamic principle of warfare was that the civilian population of a town was to be destroyed (ie. men executed, women and children taken as slaves) if they defended themselves. Although modern apologists often claim that Muslims are only supposed to attack in self-defense, this is an oxymoron that is flatly contradicted by the accounts of Islamic historians and others that go back to the time of Muhammad. Consider the example of the Qurayza Jews, who were completely obliterated only five years after Muhammad arrived in Medina. Their leader opted to stay neutral when their town was besieged by a Meccan army that was sent to take revenge for Muhammads deadly caravan raids. The tribe killed

no one from either side and even surrendered peacefully to Muhammad after the Meccans had been turned back. Yet the prophet of Islam had every male member of the Qurayza beheaded, and every woman and child enslaved, even raping one of the captives himself (what Muslim apologists might refer to as same day marriage). One of Islams most revered modern scholars, Sheikh Yusuf alQaradawi, openly sanctions offensive Jihad: In the Jihad which you are seeking, you look for the enemy and invade him. This type of Jihad takes place only when the Islamic state is invading other [countries] in order to spread the word of Islam and to remove obstacles standing in its way. Elsewhere, he notes: Islam has the right to take the initiativethis is Gods religion and it is for the whole world. It has the right to destroy all obstacles in the form of institutions and traditions it attacks institutions and traditions to release human beings from their poisonous influences, which distort human nature and curtail human freedom. Those who say that Islamic Jihad was merely for the defense of the homeland of Islam diminish the greatness of the Islamic way of life. The widely respected Dictionary of Islam defines Jihad as A religious war with those who are unbelievers in the mission of Muhammad. It is an incumbent religious duty, established in the Quran and in the Traditions as a divine institution, and enjoined specially for the purpose of advancing Islam and of repelling evil from Muslims[Quoting from the Hanafi school,

Hedaya, 2:140, 141.], The destruction of the sword is incurred by infidels, although they be not the first aggressors, as appears from various passages in the traditions which are generally received to this effect. Muhammads failure to leave a clear line of succession resulted in perpetual internal war following his death. Those who knew him best first fought to keep remote tribes from leaving Islam and reverting to their preferred religion (the Ridda or Apostasy wars). Then, within the closer community, early Meccan converts battled later ones. Hostility developed between those immigrants who had traveled with Muhammad to Mecca and the Ansar at Medina who had helped them settle in. Finally there was a violent struggle within Muhammads own family between his favorite wife and favorite daughter a jagged schism that has left Shias and Sunnis at each others throats to this day. The strangest and most untrue thing that can be said about Islam is that it is a Religion of Peace. If every standard by which the West is judged and condemned (slavery, imperialism, intolerance, misogyny, sexual repression, warfare) were applied equally to Islam, the verdict would be devastating. Islam never gives up what it conquers, be it religion, culture, language or life. Neither does it make apologies or any real effort at moral progress. It is the least open to dialogue and the most self-absorbed. It is convinced of its own perfection, yet brutally shuns self-examination and

represses criticism. This is what makes the Qurans verses of violence so dangerous. They are given the weight of divine command. While Muslim terrorists take them as literally as anything else in their holy book, and understand that Islam is incomplete without Jihad, moderates offer little to contradict them outside of opinion. Indeed, what do they have? Speaking of peace and love may win over the ignorant, but when every twelfth verse of Islams holiest book either speaks to Allahs hatred for non-Muslims or calls for their death, forced conversion, or subjugation, its little wonder that sympathy for terrorism runs as deeply as it does in the broader community even if most Muslims personally prefer not to interpret their religion in this way. Although scholars like Ibn Khaldun, one of Islams most respected philosophers, understood that the holy war is a religious duty, because of the universalism of the Muslim mission and (the obligation to) convert everybody to Islam either by persuasion or by force, many other Muslims are either unaware or willfully ignorant of the Qurans near absence of verses that preach universal non-violence. Their understanding of Islam comes from what they are taught by others. In the West, it is typical for believers to think that their religion must be like Christianity preaching the New Testament virtues of peace, love, and tolerance because Muslims are taught that Islam is supposed to be superior in

every way. They are somewhat surprised and embarrassed to learn that the evidence of the Quran and the bloody history of Islam are very much in contradiction to this. Others simply accept the violence. In 1991, a Palestinian couple in America was convicted of stabbing their daughter to death for being too Westernized. A family friend came to their defense, excoriating the jury for not understanding the culture, claiming that the father was merely following the religion and saying that the couple had to discipline their daughter or lose respect. (source). In 2011, unrepentant Palestinian terrorists, responsible for the brutal murders of civilians, women and children explicitly in the name of Allah were treated to a luxurious holy pilgrimage to Mecca by the Saudi king without a single Muslim voice raised in protest. For their part, Western liberals would do well not to sacrifice critical thinking to the god of political correctness, or look for reasons to bring other religion down to the level of Islam merely to avoid the existential truth that this it is both different and dangerous. There are just too many Muslims who take the Quran literally and too many others who couldnt care less about the violence done in the name of Islam. The Myth: Muhammad Lived at Peace with the Jews

Part 1: The Banu Qaynuqa The Truth: The early part of the Quran was written while Muhammad lived in Mecca, a town with very few Jews and no Jewish tribes. At the time, he presented himself to the Meccans as a Jewish prophet based on the stories that he learned from the Jews that he met on his travels and from his cousin Waraqa, a convert from Judaism (the Quran addresses this accusation, but only to the extent of denying it). When Muhammad relocated to Medina, there were three Jewish tribes living there already whose good graces he needed to stay in initially, since he and his small band of Muslim immigrants were in a position of relative weakness. He tried to convince the Jews that he was the last in the succession of their own prophets and even changed the Qibla (direction of prayer) toward Jerusalem, the center of the Jewish world. The Jews at Medina were not impressed with Muhammads esoteric claims, particularly since there were obvious discrepancies between their Torah and his version of the same stories. In the Quran, history from the Bible is presented immaturely and sounds more like a series of fairy tales with the same redundant moral believe in Muhammads claims about himself or face earthly destruction and eternal torment.

When asked why he didnt provide proof of his prophethood by performing some sort of miracle as the prophets of the past had done, Muhammad came up with a clever excuse by saying that there was no point in doing so since the Jews had rejected those past prophets anyway (Quran3:183-184). Thus, Muhammad had nothing to offer but his own testimony. The prophet of Islam did not handle the Jewish rejection well, particularly since his people had been relying heavily on his many claims of being a prophet in the same mode as Moses, Abraham and Jesus. Muhammad resolved his dilemma by claiming that the Jews of Medina were heretics and he arbitrarily dismissed their version of the Torah by claiming that they had corrupted it and hidden the verses that supported his claims of being a prophet. (Interestingly, despite the many Jews who converted to Islam, either out of compulsion or free will, no one ever produced the uncorrupted Torah that was supposed to have existed). Following Muhammads victory against the Meccans at Badr, his wealth and power had increased to the point of being able to take care of his Jew problem. The words of the Quran become noticeably harsher toward the People of the Book in the Medina portion of the text, and his actions become confrontational. Although much is made of the Constitution of Medina, the treaty that Muhammad created for all of the local tribes on his

arrival, contemporary Muslims are often reluctant to admit the injunction that cancelled out this treaty less than two years later: While we were in the Mosque, the Prophet came out and said, Let us go to the Jews We went out till we reached Bait-ulMidras. He said to them, If you embrace Islam, you will be safe. You should know that the earth belongs to Allah and His Apostle, and I want to expel you from this land. So, if anyone amongst you owns some property, he is permitted to sell it, otherwise you should know that the Earth belongs to Allah and His Apostle. (Bukhari 53:392) Having announced his intentions, Muhammad looked for an excuse to take land from those Jews who refused to convert to Islam. His first target was a tribe that had recently been aligned in a conflict against the other two. Muhammad guessed correctly that the other Jewish tribes would not come to the assistance of the Banu Qaynuqa if he laid siege to them. Muhammads excuse is said to be an incident in which a Muslim was killed by an angry Jewish mob. That the mob was angry because the Muslim in question had just murdered a Jewish merchant over a womans honor is sometimes conveniently forgotten by contemporary apologists, who nonetheless admit that Muhammad chose to lay siege to the Qaynuqa stronghold rather than mediate a peaceful resolution to the crisis.

This point is important. According to Muslim historians, the first blood shed was when a Jew was murdered by a Muslim for playing a prank on a Muslim woman (by lifting her dress). The Muslim was killed in retaliation by those who had just witnessed the murder. On what basis is physical violence much less murder justified by a prank of this sort? Moreover, if Muhammad believed in the Old Testament law of an eye for an eye, then why did he not recognize the legitimacy of the second killing against the disparity of the first? In any event, the self-proclaimed prophet of God responded with self-serving force against a people that had welcomed him to their community less than two years earlier. Unprepared for battle, the Qaynuqa surrendered to their former guest without a fight. Muhammad wished to slay the entire tribe outright, but was talked out of it by a mutual Arab friend, who was horrified by his intentions: Abdullah b. Ubayy b. Salul went to him when God had put them in his power and said, O Muhammad, deal kindly with my clients (now they were allies of Khazraj), but the apostle put him off. He repeated the words, and the apostle turned away from him, whereupon he thrust his hand into the collar of the apostles robe; the apostle was so angry that his face became almost black. He said, Confound you, let me go. He answered, No, by God, I will not let you go until you deal

kindly with my clients. Four hundred men without mail and three hundred mailed protected me from all mine enemies; would you cut them down in one morning? By God, I am a man who fears that circumstances may change The apostle said, You can have them. (Ibn Ishaq/Hisham 546) Muhammad was thus talked into allowing the Jews of Qaynuqa to escape only with a few tools and the clothes on their back. He confiscated their wealth and land, taking a fifth for himself and giving the rest to the other Muslims. (According to the Quran, this was their punishment for not believing in Muhammad 3:10-12). The man who had saved the lives of the Jews was later called a hypocrite by Muhammad, and it is evident that he deeply regretted his decision not to slay the Qaynuqa. One of the nine Quranic verses that prohibit Muslims from taking Jews and Christians as friends was revealed at this time. Thus was Muhammad able to fulfill his own promise that those who resist Allah and his Messenger will be humiliated (Quran 58:20), further solidifying his credibility with the Muslims and inspiring fourteen centuries of relentless Jihad in the name of following his example. less than a year after evicting the first. The circumstances under which this occurred are a strong testimony to the double-standards by which the Muslims treated others (explicitly laid out in the Quran: 48:29). In 625, one of Muhammads soldiers murdered two men in their sleep who were from a tribe that had an agreement of friendship with him (Ibn Ishaq/Hisham 650). It was decided that blood-money would be offered to satisfy this debt (although Muhammad held non-Muslims to the highest standards, he never put his own men to death for killing nonMuslims). However, rather than take care of this debt himself from the substantial wealth that he acquired from raiding Meccan caravans and confiscating Jewish property, Muhammad went to a Jewish tribe, the Banu Nadir, to request their contribution, even though the tribe had nothing to do with the murder (Ibn Ishaq/Hisham 652). Once he showed up with his men, Muhammad made his demands and then waited outside the wall of their house for the money. Later, he claimed that Allah spoke to him during this time and told him that the Jews were going to assassinate him by dropping a rock from the roof of the house onto his head: As the apostle was with a number of this companions news came to him from heaven about what these people intended (Ibn Ishaq/Hisham 652)

Muhammad left, then returned with an army and laid siege to the entire community, forcing them to surrender without a fight. As with the Qaynuqa (the Jewish tribe before them), the people were evicted with the clothes on their back and what they could pack on their camels. Another revelation from Allah (relayed through Muhammad, of course) allowed the prophet of Islam to personally confiscate all of the remaining property for himself (Bukhari 52:153). For the skeptic, there are a couple of problems with Muhammads justification for evicting an entire tribe of people even within the boundaries of the account. In the first place, it is certainly suspicious that he demanded that another tribe pay for what his own men had done and that he went personally to collect the money. Given what Allah supposedly knew, one wonders why Allah didnt just save His messenger the trip. As for Muhammads assertion that his god spoke in his ear, thus enabling him to confiscate the wealth of an entire community for his personal gain well, lets just say that it is curious at best. Revelations of convenience were quite common in Muhammads life, providing him with wealth from Muslims and non-Muslims alike, along with eleven wives and unlimited sex with female slaves. He operated with the impunity of a cult leader. But the largest problem is that Muhammad justified his attack on the Banu Nadir by saying that they had planned to assassinate him. By this standard, the Jews would have been

acting entirely within their rights, given that the prophet of Islam had carried out several assassinations against their own community by that time! A Banu Nadir Jew named Kab al-Ashraf was actually murdered on Muhammads order just a few months before the entire tribe was attacked. The excuse was that he had lamented the killing of the Meccans at the Battle of Badr and responded by composing crude poems about the Muslim women: Then he composed amatory verses of an insulting nature about the Muslim women. The apostle saidWho will rid me of alAshraf? [Another Muslim} said, I will deal with him for you O apostle of Allah. I will kill him. He said, Do so if you can. (Ibn Ishaq/Hisham 550) Muhammad gave the man permission to take any measures necessary to murder the poet, including lying. The assassin gathered a group of Muslims and tricked al-Ashraf to come out of his house, alone and unarmed, by pretending to be interested in obtaining a loan. The murder took place in the dark and was a messy affair. alAshraf began screaming as he was being stabbed: Meanwhile the enemy of Allah had made such a noise that every fort around us was showing a light. I thrust [the dagger] into the lower part of his body, then I bore down upon it until I

reached his genitals, and the enemy of Allah fell to the ground. (Ibn Ishaq/Hisham 552) These two events demonstrate that the Muslims of Medina operated under a different standard than what they held to those around them. Muslims were allowed to kill others when they felt insulted or in danger, but others were not allowed to even plot in defense of their own lives. Muhammad was in a position to deny others the same sympathy and tolerance that he demanded for himself because of the control that he had established within his first two years of arriving in Medina. He used his newfound power to order assassinations and evictions, thus putting dissenters in fear. Keep in mind that when Muhammad was in Mecca, he told the elders there that he would bring them slaughter (Tabari Vol 6, 102) and they subsequently evicted him. Yet, instead of recognizing the logic behind this, Muhammad complained incessantly about his ignominious ouster and eventually returned with a conquering army. He also behaved with extreme hypocrisy toward those who spoke out against him, regardless of what sort of threat they actually posed. For todays Muslims, who prefer to believe that Muhammad was an unselfish man of perfect character, the fate of the Banu Nadir is but a minor inconvenience. It does not bother them that an entire tribe of Jews was evicted on the basis of a

hypothetical assassination plot following the very real assassination of one of their leaders. Jews are not Muslims. Hence they are not entitled to be treated with the same respect. Islam is the ultimate supremacist ideology. The Myth: Muhammad Lived at Peace with the Jews Part 3: The Banu Qurayza The Truth: Verses 5:45-48 of the Quran affirm the Old Testament rule of an eye for an eye, but also add the Christian principle that forgiveness is more noble than retaliation. If ever there was proof that these words do not necessarily apply to the treatment of non-Muslims, however, it is in Muhammads conduct toward the Jews in general and the Qurayza tribe in particular. Muhammad and his band of immigrants arrived in Medina in 622 completely dependent on the hospitality of the three Jewish tribes that lived there alongside the Arabs. In less than two years, two of the tribes that had welcomed him, the Banu Qaynuqa and the Banu Nadir would be evicted, losing their land and their wealth to the Muslims as soon as their guests gained the power to conquer and confiscate. Muhammad accomplished this by deftly exploiting his opponents divisions.

The prophet of Islam chose the order of the doomed tribes carefully. He knew that the other two tribes would not come to the assistance of the first, for example, since they had been aligned against one another in a recent war. He also knew that the third would not assist the second due to a dispute over blood money. The last tribe to remain was the Banu Qurayza. Like the others, the Qurayza were a peaceful community of farmers and tradesmen who eventually surrendered to Muhammad without a fight. Although the prophet of Islam had been wise enough not to order the wholesale slaughter of the first two tribes following their defeat (which certainly would have stiffened the resistance of the Qurayza), there was no practical reason for Muhammad to repress his genocidal urges once the last tribe had surrendered their wealth and power. Over 800 surrendered men and boys (and at least one woman) from the Qurayza tribe were beheaded by the prophet of Islam in a bloodbath that is of acute embarrassment to todays Muslim apologists. It is an episode that is not only completely at odds with the idea that Islam is a peaceful religion, but also the claim that it is the heir to Christianity, since even that religions most dedicated critics could hardly imagine Jesus and his disciples doing such a thing. It is only in modern times, as Islam finds itself having to compete with morally mature religions in open debate, that the

story of the massacre has become controversial. Some Muslims deny the episode, largely on the basis of mere inconvenience. Others are unaware of it altogether. But, not only is the incident well documented in the Hadith and Sira (biography of Muhammad), there is even a brief reference to it in the Quran (verse 33:26). Since Islam makes no apologies, particularly for anything that Muhammad personally did, contemporary Muslims generally try to convince themselves that the victims of Qurayza deserved their fate. They must have turned on the Muslims in battle and inflicted many deaths, forcing Muhammad to yield to the wishes of his people and respond in kind. Unfortunately, the accounts of what happened, as related to the early Muslim historians by eyewitnesses, do not support this myth. In fact, it was the Qurayza who were caught in an impossible situation at the time between the Muslims and their Meccan adversaries. Shortly after arriving in Medina in 622, Muhammad began raiding the merchant caravans traveling to and from neighboring Mecca. He would steal their property and kill anyone who defended it (Ibn Ishaq/Hisham 424-425). The Jews of Qurayza had nothing to do with this. Much like the Meccans, the Jews were also traders and they appreciated the value of security in doing business. They neither encouraged Muhammads raids nor shared in his ill-gotten gain. After a few years of this, the Meccans eventually realized that

they would have to try and capture Medina, since it was being used as a base of operations by Muhammad and his pirates. In 627, they sent an army to the outskirts of the city and appeared poised to take it in what has been called the Battle of the Trench (the Muslims dug a trench around the exposed northern and western parts of the city to stop the Meccan military advance). The Qurayza, who lived to the east of Medina, were thus caught in a bad situation. Not responsible for Muhammads war, they were nonetheless drawn into it, particularly when they were approached by a Meccan leader and asked not to assist Muhammad in his defense against the siege (to that point, the Qurayza had contributed digging tools to the Muslims, but not fighters). The chief of the Qurayza did not wish to even entertain the Meccan envoy, but he was tricked into allowing him into his home (Ishaq/Hisham 674). Once there, the Meccan began making his case that the battle was going against Muhammad and that his fall was imminent. The anguish of the Qurayza chief over the trying circumstances of the position that he felt forced into is noted even by Muslim historians: When Kab heard of Huyayys coming he shut the door of his fort in his face, and when he asked permission to enter he refused to see him, saying that he was a man of ill omen Then Huyayy accused him of [being inhospitable] This so enraged Kab that he threw open his door. him, Good heavens, Kab, I have brought you immortal fame and a great army They have made a firm agreement and promised me that they will not depart until we have made an end of Muhammad and his men. Kab said, By God, you have brought me immortal shame and an empty cloud while it thunders and lightenings with nothing in it. Woe to you Huyayy, leave me as I am. (Ishaq/Hisham 674) After much wheedling by the Meccans, however, the Qurayza leader finally gave in and agreed to remain neutral in the conflict. He would neither contribute troops to the citys defense nor to its impending capture at the hands of an army with superior numbers. The Muslims would be left on their own to deal with the conflict they had started with the Meccans. The first twenty days of the conflict passed without fighting (Ibn Ishaq/Hisham 676) other than a few exchanges of arrows across the trench. A half-hearted effort on that day to breach the defenses proved fatal to the Meccan, thus convincing their leader that they could not win unless the Qurayza joined the battle from the other side. However, the Qurayza refused, ironically enough, thus prompting the Meccans to immediately abandon the siege. A grand total of just six Muslims had been killed at the Battle of the Trench. Each of their names were carefully recorded (Ibn Ishaq/Hisham 699) none were killed by the Qurayza or by anything done by the Qurayza.

With the battle over, however, Muhammad surprised his army by turning them against the Qurayza fortress, claiming that the neutrality of the leader was a breach of the original constitution of Medina which the prophet of Islam had personally drawn up for the tribes five years earlier. The original language of this treaty is not known, however, and later guesses as to what it might have said seem suspiciously tailored. It is unlikely, for example, that the tribes of Medina would have given Muslims the right to slaughter them for merely speaking out against him, yet several prominent Jewish leaders and poets had been assassinated on Muhammads order prior to the Qurayza affair. At least one innocent merchant was slain by his Muslim business partner following Muhammads order in 624 for his men to kill any Jew who falls into your power (alTabari 7:97). Muhammad had also attacked the two other Jewish tribes parties to the same agreement looting their property and then evicting them from their land. There is little doubt that the troubles Muhammad brought on Medina, through his mistreatment of the Jews and his relentless pursuit of hostilities against the Meccans, were a part of the sales pitch made by the Meccans to the Qurayza leader to win his neutrality along with the implicit threat of slaughter if the city were taken by the Meccans. From Kabs perspective, it would only be a matter of time before Muhammad found an excuse to attack and plunder his tribe as well.

Contrary to popular misconceptions, however, the Qurayza had not attacked the Muslims. In fact, had they attacked, then it surely would have been the end of Muhammad and his band of pirates since the southern end of the city was completely exposed to the Qurayza. In a terrible irony, it was the decision not to engage in violence that later sealed the fate of the Jews, who were only the first in a very long line of victims to horribly overestimate the value that Islam places on the lives of unbelievers. According to Muhammad, it was the angel Gabriel (seen only by himself, of course) who ordered the siege on the Qurayza. After twenty-five days of blockade, the Jews gave in and surrendered to the prophet of Islam. As Ibn Ishaq/Hisham puts it, they submitted themselves to the Apostles judgment (Ishaq/Hisham 688). Another misconception is that Muhammad did not render the death sentence against the Qurayza and was therefore not responsible for it. There is a partial truth in this, in that Muhammad clearly attempted to offload responsibility on another party. However, from the narrative, it is obvious that Muhammad clearly approved of the subsequent massacre a fact further verified both by his choice of arbitrator and his subsequent reaction. First, the prophet of Islam tricked the Qurayza by getting them to agree to put their fate in the hands of one of their own. In fact, this was a Jewish convert to Islam, a Muslim who had

fought in the Battle of the Trench. Unbeknownst to the Qurayza, Sad bin Muadh had also been one of the few Muslims fatally injured in the battle (Ishaq/Hisham 689), which one can reasonably assume to have influenced his judgment. According to the Hadith, he was quite eager to continue slaying unbelievers even as he lay dying in his tent (Bukhari 59:448). Secondly, when Sad did render his decree that the men of Qurayza should be killed and their women and children pressed into slavery, Muhammad did not express the slightest bit of disapproval. In fact, the prophet of Islam confirmed this barbaric sentence to be Allahs judgment as well (Bukhari 58:148). Consider the contrast between the historical Muhammad and the man of peace and forgiveness that todays Muslims often assure us that he was. In light of the fact that the Qurayza had not killed anyone, wouldnt a true man of peace have simply sought dialogue with them to try and determine their grievance, find common ground and then resolve the matter with dignity to both parties? Instead, the prophet of Islam had the men bound with rope. He dug trenches and then began beheading the captives in batches. In a scene that must have resembled footage of Hitlers death squads, small groups of helpless Jews, who had done no harm to anyone, were brought out and forced to kneel, staring down at the bodies of others before their own heads

were lopped off and their bodies were pushed down into the ditch. There is some evidence that Muhammad personally engaged in the slaughter. Not only does the earliest narrative bluntly say that the apostle sent for them and made an end of them, but there is also support for this in the Quran. Verse 33:26 says of the Qurayza, some you slew, some you took captive. The Arabic you: is in the plural, but the Quran is supposed to be Allahs conversation with Muhammad, so it makes no sense that he would not be included. In any event, there is no denying that Muhammad found pleasure in the slaughter, particularly after acquiring a pretty young Jewish girl (freshly widowed and thus available to him for sexual servitude) (Ishaq/Hisham 693). Other women were not quite as compliant. The historians record the reaction of one woman who literally lost her mind as her family was being killed. The executioners apparently found her maniacal laughter annoying and beheaded her as well. As Aisha later recounted: I will not forget that she was laughing extremely although she knew that she would be killed (Abu Dawud 2665) (One can forgive Aishas obtuseness. At the time that she and her husband sat observing the carnage together, the wife of Muhammad was only 12-years-old).

Boys as young as 13 or 14 were executed as well, provided that they had reached puberty. The Muslims ordered the boys to drop their clothes. Those with pubic hair then had their throats cut (Abu Dawud 4390). There was no point in trying to determine whether or not they were actual combatants because there were none. There had been no combat! Muhammad parceled out the widows and surviving children as slaves to his men for sexual servitude and labor. The wealth accumulated by the Qurayza was also divided. Since the tribe had been a peaceful farming and trading community, there were not enough weapons and horses taken to suit Muhammads tastes, so he obtained more of these by trading off some of the Qurayza women in a distant slave market (Ishaq 693). In addition to the main question as to why people who had not killed anyone were put to death and enslaved, there are several others raised by Muhammads massacre of the Qurayza. For example, the Quran says that no bearer of burdens can bear the burden of another (Quran53:38) yet every member of the tribe was punished for a decision pressed on one reluctant member. And what of the places in the Quran where violent passages are sometimes mitigated by the occasional admonishment to cease killing those who stop fighting? The surrendered Qurayza had never even fought in the first place. While Muslim apologists grapple with the challenges posed by this episode, the fate of the Qurayza is only the first of many such massacres that the Religion of Peace has provided the

world. Whether it be the 4,000 Jews at Granada in 1066, the 100,000 Hindus on a single day in 1399, or the million or so Christian Armenians in the early 1900s, untold tens of millions of innocents have perished in mass executions at the hands of Islams dedicated disciples Yet, there has never been, nor will there ever be in the future, an apology from those who follow Muhammad, since the massacre of infidels was the example personally set by their prophet at Qurayza. The Myth: Muhammad Never Killed Captives The Truth: Islamic terrorists take and execute hostages on an almost daily basis. So much so, that mainstream Muslims rarely even bother to comment. When they do, however, we are assured that this has nothing to do with Islam because Muhammad never executed prisoners of war, or anyone else taken hostage Except that he did. During the Battle of Badr, several defenseless Meccans were slaughtered by Muhammads companions. These included a man named Umayya and his young son, who were taken prisoner by a Muslim (a former friend who tried to protect them), but were then set upon by a mob before they could be

them), but were then set upon by a mob before they could be escorted to safety: I said (would you attack) my prisoners? But The people formed a ring around us as I was protecting him. Then a man drew his sword and cut off his sons foot so that he fell down and Umayya [the boys father] let out a cry such as I have never heard They hewed them to pieces with their swords until they were dead. (Ibn Ishaq/Hisham 449) Another heartwarming account of Muslim chivalry during the same battle concerns Abu Jahl, one of Muhammads archenemies at Mecca. He met his death as he lay defenseless. In this case, two Muslims took the opportunity to administer the death blow: Muawwidh passed Abu Jahl as he lay there helpless and smote him until he left him at his last gasp. (Ibn Ishaq/Hisham 451) Another Muslim named Abdullah then came by and put his foot on Abu Jahls neck and taunted him before decapitating him: Then I cut off his head and brought it to the apostle saying, This is the head of the enemy of Allah, Abu Jahl. I threw his head before the apostle and he gave thanks to Allah. (Ibn Ishaq/Hisham 451). Apparently these companions of Muhammad were unaware of the Muslim rule against killing captives. But who could really blame them? Not only did the prophet of Islam praise them for

the slaughter, he also ordered the killing of another captive brought before him. Uqba bin Abu Muayt pled for his life: When the apostle ordered him to be killed, Uqba said, But who will look after my children, O Muhammad? [Muhammads reply] Hell. The man was put to death. (Ibn Ishaq/Hisham 458) Other captives were ransomed, but Uqba received special treatment because he had mocked Muhammad at Mecca. His crime was that he had thrown the entrails of a dead animal on Muhammads back as he was praying, to the amusement of other Meccans (Muslim 4422, Ibn Ishaq/Hisham 277). The prophet of Islam determined that this fraternity prank was worth killing over, and it became the first of several other occasions in which people were slain on Muhammads order merely for mocking him. Interestingly, there appears to be evidence that Muhammad regretted not killing all of his captives, instead of ransoming some. Verse 8:67 of the Quran was revealed in the aftermath of Badr and says It is not for any prophet to have captives until he hath made slaughter in the land. The prophet of Islam went on to execute many other captives, most notoriously the 800 men and boys taken prisoner at Qurayza. His men also brutally murdered an elderly woman

You see Muslims believe in every Word of the Quran. As Ive explained elsewhere already that Quran as was being revealed Islam was coming up and more and more people were joining. Imagine yourself being in the midst of pagans as my great grand parents did in Hindustan in early 1800 and his brothers kicked them out of their homes and had to settle in East Africa. But things got worse for them Hindus too and so they were welcome by their bros in East Africa and that is how we love each other and co-exist peacefully! We dont fight and dont advocate violence at all. Yet, if you pretend to be thick and ignore the knowledge of process revelation of the Quran, then you have every right of remaining afraid of Muslims as the verses tell you! So, if you (empty head) see a Muslim then flee lest he slaughters you, okay? If you insult their most revered figure then you must expect some punishment from them. I cannot go scott free if I were to abuse your dad, right? Mohammed is more important than their own lives! You follow your religion or join Islam and be good, do

No. go and read Tafsirs (context) of Quranic verses. You will find that Islam orders to kill innocent NOT injustice. Wars happen all the time BUT champions raise hand of friendship towards others and try to resolve conflict. You very beautifully linked INDOCHINA war here but do you know what happens today. INDIA raised a hand towards CHINA and today both trade worth a million $. Anyways, INDOCHINA war is totally different due to a -> It was not for religious region b -> It wasnt a civil war c -> Both the countries now want to stop the war. Therefore, do not put this war to the list.

You said that your grandfather lived in early 1800. That time, Hindustan was under British custody and they were trying their best to educate Hindus what exactly is the true face of muslims. That was so called Divide and Rule policy. So, Hindu Muslim war is initiated by British. So, blame them not Hindustan. Grow up! You just threatened BOB that you (OR someone else) will kill him if he insults your prophet. You insulted Jesus. Now, you tell me that Bob (OR any other Christian for that matter who read your comments) kill you ????? As your prophet is important to you, So is Jesus to Christians. Even then no Christian killed you when you insulted Jesus. This is obvious proof that: CHRISTIANITY TEACHES PEACE AND TOLERANCE WHILE ISLAM TEACHES TERRORISM ALONE 0 Reply

MUSLIMS FOR PROGRESSIVE VALUES WHAT WE DO MPV establishes and nurtures vibrant progressive Muslim communities. We do this by creating opportunities for religious discourse, volunteer and community activities, and cultural events bringing together the arts, spirituality and social activism. MPV is a progressive Muslim voice on contemporary issues. We voice our perspectives by participating in civil discourse, engaging with the media and government entities, and by partnering with both Muslim and non-Muslim progressive organizations. MPV promotes theologically-sound frameworks for Islamic liberalism. We seek to reinvigorate the Islamic tradition of ijtihad (critical engagement and interpretation of sacred texts) and intellectual discourse. We do this by collaborating with religious scholars and developing position papers on theological issues that are accessible to a wide audience. BUILDING A PROGRESSIVE MUSLIM COMMUNITY Too often Muslims in America are asked where are the progressives amongst us? Arent there any Muslims who are for womens reproductive rights, for LGBTQ rights, for the separation of Religion and State?

Adapted for MPV by Tynan Power Preface This is adapted from the chapter Sharia and Islamic Family Law: Transition and Transformation by Professor Abdullahi Ahmed An-Naim in Islamic Family Law in a Changing World: A Global Resource Book. Professor An-Naim shows us that Islamic Family Law (IFL) is not the same as Sharia. Since IFL is based on human interpretation and judgment, it is not a divine order from God to Muslims. It can be changed based on new interpretations in order to achieve justice and equality for Muslim women in their families and communities today. The pronunciation key is intended to give English-speaking readers a close approximation of the word in Arabic. It can not provide a perfect equivalent, however, because some Arabic sounds do not exist in English. We have chosen to use the widely-used Common Era (also known as Christian or Gregorian) calendar, rather than the Islamic Hijri (AH) calendar. Common Era dates end in CE. There is a lot of confusion about Sharia and Islamic Family Law What is Sharia? In Arabic, the word sharia means way or path. It is pronounced SHA-ree-ah. Sharia is not a legal system. It is the overall way of life of Islam, as people understand it according to traditional, early interpretations. These early interpretations date from 700 to 900 CE, not long after the Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) died in 632 CE. Sharia can evolve with Islamic societies to address their needs today. Is Sharia the word of God?

No. Sharia was not revealed by Allah (God). It is based on the Quran and things the Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) said and did. Some of the sources of Sharia, such as the Quran, are considered divine (or the word of God) by Muslims. However, Sharia was created by people who interpreted the Quran and the words and actions of the Prophet Muhammad(PBUH). How did Sharia come about? To understand how Sharia came about, its important to understand a little bit about history. The Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) is believed to have been born in 570 CE. The Quran was revealed to Muhammad(PBUH) starting around 610 CE. Early Muslims followed the guidance of the Quran and the example of the Prophet Muhammad(PBUH). If they had a question, they could just ask him. After he died, people would ask their questions to the Prophets family and friendspeople who had a good idea of what he might have answered. The Prophets friends and family would often tell stories about things the Prophet said or did, to help explain their answers. These stories came to be called Hadith. It wasnt long before the Prophets friends and familyand everyone who knew himhad died. People needed a way to figure out answers based on the Quran and Hadith. They started looking for patternsDid the Prophet(PBUH) always give the same kind of answer in similar situations?and principlesDoes the Quran tell us to be compassionate in many different situations? These patterns and principles were put together into a system, along with specific rules in the Quran and Hadith, so people could figure out the answers to their questions. The people who put the traditional interpretations of Sharia together also included some other things, like common practices from their time and cultural practices from their area of the world. How was Sharia used in the beginning? As time went on, people had new questions about new problems. Religious scholars could

use Sharia to try to figure out what people should do. The goal was to try to get as close as possible to what the Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) would have said if he were still around. When early scholars interpreted Sharia, it was called ijtihad. Even very religious, well-educated scholars could make mistakes, though. Sometimes they disagreed with each other. That is why there are different Islamic schools of thought, called madhahib. Is there a difference between Sharia and Islamic Law? Yes. Sharia isnt a legal system. It includes Islamic principles to help guide people to new answers, and it includes common cultural practices that had to do with a specific time and place in history. Muslim rulers wanted a way to make Sharia into law. To do that, they decided which rules needed to be laws, first. Then they used interpretations of Sharia to show people that the new laws were Islamic. The result was what we call Islamic Law. Islamic Law is always based on someones interpretation of the Sharia (which is an interpretation of the Quran and Hadith). Because it is a human interpretation, Islamic Law can mean different things in different places and at different times in history. Today, interpretations of Sharia are usually still limited to rules of interpretation (called usul al-fiqh) that were established by early scholars before 900 CE. More recently scholars have called for new ijtihad to meet the changing needs of modern Islamic societies. Do Islamic countries today use Islamic Law? Yes and no. Many Islamic countries believe they are following Sharia in family law matters, but Sharia is not a legal system. These countries actually use some kind of Islamic Law in family matters, and in all other matters apply European-style law left over from colonization. Iran, Saudi Arabia and a few other countries claim that most of their laws are based on Sharia, but, in fact, most of those laws are secular. Even those laws which come from

Sharia, but, in fact, most of those laws are secular. Even those laws which come from Islamic Law are different from place to place because they are interpreted by peopleand those people are influenced by their culture. Still, Islamic Law is followed by many Muslims as a way of life, not as law. In that case, it is a personal choice, based on the persons own understanding and beliefs. Are all laws in Islamic countries based on Islamic Law? No. Today, many Islamic countries use some version of Islamic Family Law (also called IFL in this article), even if they use secular laws for all other kinds of laws. What is Islamic Family Law? IFL is a type of law that covers topics like marriage, divorce, custody of children and the status of women. It also may be called Muslim Personal Status Law. The idea of IFL was introduced by European colonial powers. Colonial governments separated the field of family law from the rest of Sharia, then enforced IFL as national law, according to European models of government. All other fields of law came under secular European-style laws. Was Sharia used as law at the time of the Prophet Muhammad(PBUH)? No. During the life of the Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) and for 150 years after he died, the Sharia did not exist the way we think of it today. People did not treat Sharia as a system of laws. Were early Islamic societies governed by Islamic Law? No. Early Islamic societies were ruled by caliphs (from Arabic khalifa)such as Al-Khulafa al-Rashidun (the Rightly-Guided Caliphs)and later by kings and emperors. These rulers mixed Islamic ideas with secular rules that were already in place or that had been the common practice. These early Muslim empires did not have what we now call law, with the government making laws that apply to all people and enforcing the laws everywhere in the

same way. Communities of Muslims applied Sharia in their own informal ways. Over time, laws changed. Some new rulers tried to bring the law closer to Islamic Lawas they understood it at the time, which might have been different from how previous rulers understood it. Others introduced new secular laws based on culture or their personal goals. Did laws in Islamic countries change when they were colonized? Yes. Almost all Islamic countries were controlled by European, non-Islamic countries. This was called colonization, and the Islamic countries were called colonies or protectorates of the European nations that controlled them. The European countries in power, such as Britain and France, were called colonial powers. These countries brought their own laws and practices and put them to use in the Islamic countries they controlled. Before colonization, Sharia was observed by Muslims, but it was not enforced by government. Colonization changed that. Traditional application of Sharia by communities was replaced by European-style laws that were developed so the government could enforce them. For example, before colonization, the parties in a legal case would select the madhab (school of thought) they wanted to apply to their case. They would select a judge (qadi) who was an expert in that madhab and present their case. That way both parties gave the judge the authority to make a decision. They knew the judgment was consistent with their own beliefs, and they could accept that the decision of the judge was valid. During colonial rule, that traditional choice was no longer possible. European legal codes were created and applied by the government, according to its own authority. People didnt have a choice in the matter: they had no choice which madhab they wanted to follow or which judge they wanted to consult.

This happened in all fields of law, but it happened differently in family law. Sharia was supposed to continue to apply to family law. Even in family law matters, though, government officials selected particular principles of Sharia to be turned into laws, based on their own preference. Sometimes the rulers mixed very different views from different scholars, turning them into rules that none of the scholars would accept as valid. After independence, Muslim rulers continued trying to apply Sharia as law based on the system they were used tothe colonial system. The result was an Islamic Family Law that is very similar to the European laws from the colonial time. To make these laws more acceptable to people, Islamic governments say that the family law is Islamic. Were there secular courts in Islamic countries before colonization? Yes. Secular courts existed from the Umayyad period (661-750 CE) and the Abassid period (starting around 750 CE). These secular courts covered many practical issues for the nation, while Sharia judges dealt with things they considered religious matters, including family law. In later times, these two legal systems combined into a system in which secular judges consulted with Islamic scholars, as needed. An Islamic scholar, or mufti, could offer a religious ruling, or fatwa, based on his interpretation of Sharia. A secular judge could then use the fatwa to make a legal ruling. Did colonization change the legal systems in Islamic countries? Yes, but not entirely. In the 1800s, colonial powers created secular courts, especially to deal with civil and criminal cases using colonial laws. In colonized countries, Islamic Law and existing secular laws were often replaced by these new colonial laws. In practice, Islamic Law became more limited, often reduced to the field of family law. Can Islamic Law systems today claim to be Sharia? No. Islamic countries today apply laws that are based on human interpretation and judgment, even when they are called Islamic Law. Islamic Law is not Sharia for several reasons: Sharia is a moral religious system, not a legal system. Whenever countries claim to apply Islamic Law, as in IFL, they can only apply the laws rulers select from different interpretations of Sharia. Some laws are chosen over others because of the rulers personal preferences or because those rules serve the rulers political goals. The result would not be considered Sharia by any madhab (school of Islamic thought). Law requires people to do specific things, while the Quran says there is no compulsion in matters of faith. Islam gives Muslims the freedom to choose among different viewsa choice only the individual believer can make, because in Islam, only the individual is responsible for his or her choices before God. Is there a problem with applying Islamic Law in only a few areas, such as family law? Yes. Sharia, whether called Islamic Law or not, contains religious obligations for Muslims but they must be observed voluntarily. When the government enforces Sharia rules as law, Muslims lose their freedom to choose from different viewsand since they cant choose, they also lose the chance to be rewarded by God for making good choices. Enforcement by the government encourages hypocrisy (saying or doing one thing, while believing another) and takes away freedom of belief. Another problem is that Sharia is a system of principles that covers all areas of life. Sharia takes into account the fact that different areas of lifefrom work to worship, from community to family lifeare connected. Trying to apply Sharia as Islamic Law in only some areas of life makes those areas distorted. For example, Sharia guidelines about support of a

divorced woman are based on the legal and social relationships between people at a particular time in history. Laws governing legal and social relationships changed over the centuries, though. Trying to apply Sharia guidelines about support when the relationships have actually changed can lead to serious problems that harm women and families. The result is often also far from showing the fairness and justice that the Prophet Muhammad taught. For example, Sharia assumes that men are responsible for supporting the women in their families, including their unmarried and divorced sisters. Todays laws, however, dont make brothers legally responsible for supporting their sisters. If divorced women are not supported by their ex-husbandsand, in some places, are not able to workand at the same time, male family members are not required to support them, the result is unjust and contrary to Islam. Is there a reason people resist changing family law in Islamic countries? Yes. Family law has been used as a token that rulers could offer to religious leaders, so the religious leaders wouldnt object to other secular laws, such as those concerning business or usury (interest-based banking and loans). Colonial powers often controlled everything except family law. Even Muslim rulers often have left this area of law to religious scholars as a way to keep peace and gain political support. For that reason, IFL has become a symbol of Muslim religious identity. Even when IFL is unjust toward women, some Muslims feel that giving it up will mean the end of Islam. The battle over IFL has become a battle for Muslim identity, rather than a battle for what is right in principleor what is truly Islamic. Is the status of women particularly affected by politics in Islamic countries? Yes. Because family law has become symbolic, it is often used to show the differences between different groups. People have used the status of women as an example of what

they believe infor example: forcing women to wear headscarves, forcing them not to, or allowing them to choose; giving women the right to vote or giving only men the right to vote; providing schools for girls, allowing girls to attend mixed-gender schools, or forbidding girls from attending school. Some have argued that it is necessary to stopand reverseany movement towards equality for women. They feel Islamic Law should not be abandoned in the one area where, often, it is still used. Others have argued that abandoning Islamic Family Law is necessary to make Islamic societies more fair for all. Yet both these arguments make the mistake of assuming that todays Islamic Family Law is the same thing as Sharia and the religion of Islam. In fact, it is all human interpretation. Could Islamic countries today apply Sharia across the board as law? Noand they shouldnt. There are several reasons for this. 1.Sharia is a set of guidelines for living a responsible moral life. It covers how a person can relate to God and to others ethically. It is open-ended and flexible, while law is not. Making Sharia law changes it. 2.The principles of Sharia do not provide everything needed for a complete legal system. 3.Islamic countries today are part of a world system, which is based on a European model of nation-state. This affects political, economic and social relationships within and among Islamic nations. By using this model, Islamic countries take on national and international obligations, such as participation in human rights treaties, the World Bank and World Trade Organization, to name a few. Some international treaties, such as those concerning human rights, reflect the teachings of the Quran and the Prophet Muhammad(PBUH). However, they are applied under the authority of international law, not under the authority of Islam. Whats more, these agreements are binding on nationseven if some of their provisions violate Sharia. If Islamic societies were to reject this world system and the European model of nation-state in order to try to live completely in accordance with Sharia, it would require changing everything from government systems to political boundaries. It would isolate these

societies from the rest of the world, economically and politically. If governments dont apply Islamic Law, wont people fall away from Islam? No. Current Islamic Law systems are not Sharia, so they are not truly Islamic in the first place. Whats more, whether or not their governments use Islamic Law, individuals should practice Islam and follow their understanding of Sharia, by choice and convictionnot out of fear of the government. In that case, their choices are not forced by law. Instead, they are guided by faith. The earliest Muslims did not live under Sharia law, yet they are considered by most Muslims to be more devout than all the generations that came after them. Their choices were guided by faithnot fear of legal action. Even today, Islam is growing in nations that are not historically Muslim and which do not have governments that claim to be Islamic. Is there a place for human will in Islam? Yes. There is a Hadith of the Prophet PBUH that says All actions are judged according to intention, and each person receives credit or blame according to her or his intention. Human will and freedom of choice are the foundation of all religious responsibility. That is why children and people with severe mental illness are not considered religiously responsible in Islam. Human will is the very thing that sets people apart from other living things, according to Islamic sources. Human will allows people to make choices and to interpret how they should live their lives. Human will can guide people to moral choices, whether or not there are laws that demand those choicesor forbid them. In Islam, when people choose to do the morally right thing, it is more highly rewarded than when they have no choice. The Quran teaches that there is no compulsion in religion people should not be forced (by law, coercion or physical force) to follow any part of Islam. Forcing people takes away their choice and prevents them from being able to get closer to Allah through their own choices based on their faith.

Does human will play a role in law? Yes. Without free will, there can be no responsibilityno one can be blamed or rewarded for their actions. Human will is a fundamental part of law on all levels. Laws exist to limit human will Human rulers exercise their wills when they create laws Human rulers exercise their wills when they choose how to enforce laws Human judges exercise their wills when they interpret laws Human beings in all walks of life exercise their wills when they decide whether or not to follow laws The role of human will is the reason why Sharia differs so much among Islamic countries. Is there a need to transform family law in Islamic countries? Yes. Some people fiercely hold on to family law as symbolic of their faith, with the mistaken idea that Islamic Family Law is Sharia. This is not true, however. Current Islamic Law can not be called Sharia. Applying Sharia as law changes it, and applying only certain parts of Sharia causes social problems, such as human rights issues. Family law in Islamic countries today should be guided by fair social policies, as well as Islamic principles that do not distort the Quran. Sexual diversity in Islam: Is there room in Islam for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Muslims? By Dr. Scott Siraj al-Haqq Kugle | Adapted for MPV by Tynan Power 2010 Muslims for Progressive Values Understanding sexual diversity in Islam Some religions seem to view sex as shameful or unclean. Is that true of Islam? No. In early Islamic history, sex was seen as a positive part of human life. The Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) helped people see that spiritual life and sexual life are connected. Early Muslim scholars talked about sex in a very straight-forward way as a normal, positive part of life. Al-Ghazali, a Muslim scholar who lived more than 900 years ago, called sexual pleasure a blessing from God. Even the Quran (the Muslim holy book) describes heaven as a paradise of a physical kind. Heaven is described as containing rewards such as rivers of milk and honey that make it appealing to the sensesincluding sexual desires. Is sexuality the same as lust? No. Sexuality is about a lot more than desire or lust. Sexuality involves desire, but also includes thoughts, acts, and how one sees oneself and others. It is part of a persons identity. It affects how people relate to each other. Its important to realize, too, that desire itself is not a bad thing in Islam. There is a well-known hadith, or story about the life of the Prophet Muhammad(PBUH), in which the Prophet said Three things were made beloved to me in this world of yours: women, perfume and prayer. This hadith indicates that sexual desire is something the Prophet cherished. Is sexuality only considered good if it is used to create children?

No. The Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) and early scholars said that sexual play is a good thing. In fact, in one hadith, Muhammad said that God rewards people for sexual play. The term sexual play is not defined in the Quran or Hadith. Some people understand it to mean sex acts other than intercourse. Sexual play does not necessarily lead to making children, so this indicates that sex is considered good and healthy whether or not it is for the purpose of creating children. So, in Islam, is it anything goes when it comes to sex? No. There are limits. Most of those limits have to do with relationships between people who have sex. The limits dont have to do with the sex acts themselves, though. For example: *In Islam, brothers and sisters cannot marry. There are verses of the Quran that specifically mention who can and can not marry. This limit prevents men and women who are closely related from creating children who may have serious health risks. *In Islam, men and women should not have sex if they do not have a known, clear relationship with each other. This limit helps ensure that children will be cared for and supported by both parents. This limit was especially important for women at a time when men had more opportunities to work and earn money. Clear relationships also help both people in a relationship to know what they can expect from each otherwhat rights and responsibilities they have. Is Islamic law clear on what is and isnt permissible? In some caseslike in the Quran verses that say brothers and sisters can not marryit is clear. In other cases, it is not so clear. Scholars today often talk about Islamic law as if it were always clear and simple. Actually, Islamic law is pretty complex. The law comes from many sources, not just the Quran. Some of those sources disagree with each other and

most are based on the opinions of human beings. In some cultures, Islamic law follows the teachings of scholars with one viewpoint, while in other cultures Islamic law may follow different scholars with different views. (There is more about Islamic law, below.) At the Prophets time, was sex only permitted between a formally-married husband and wife? No. Sex was allowed as part of a number of relationships. Most of these relationships involved a kind of contract, or agreement. Some relationship contracts were formal. A formal marriage would include witnesses and the marriage agreement might be written down and signed. Other relationship contracts were informalthey were understood by the community at the time but might not be written down or include a formal ceremony with witnesses. In the time of the Prophet Muhammad(PBUH), sex could be part of informal contract relationships, such as temporary marriages. When slavery was legal, sexual relationships between slaves and their owners also was permitted. Today, we usually dont think of marriages and other relationships contracts, but many relationships are based on an agreement of some kind. Some relationship agreements are written down and legally tie people together, while other relationship agreements are made orally (by talking). Arent Islamic rules about sex only about relationships between men and women? Not necessarily. The Quran gives rules for relationships between men and women, but it doesnt set rules for same-sex (gay or lesbian) relationships. That doesnt mean it forbids relationships between people of the same sex. There were a number of reasons why Islamic law focused on relationships between men and women. For one thing, Muslim jurists saw straight, or heterosexual, relationships as the major concern because they led to pregnancy. pregnancy. Same-sex couples may have or raise children but, for them, having children is not an accidental side-effect of having sex. The early Muslim jurists wanted to avoid situations where a child was born without the support a father could bring. At that time, men earned the most income and few women had substantial income of their own. Because of inequality between men and women, having a man in the family helped the family financially and socially. Another reason Islamic jurists talked a lot about straight relationships is that they were trying to address the needs of most people. Since most people are straight (or heterosexual), their needs were the primary concern of scholars. That does not mean that other sexual identities dont exist. It also doesnt mean that other sexual identities are forbidden just because they are not mentioned. Why is sex such a hot topic among Muslims? There are two main reasons why sex is such a hot topic. Rules about sex and gender can be used to keep men in positions of power over women. Rules about sexual relationships are often bent to benefit men, rather than staying true to the rule as it is in the Quran. For example, in many Islamic cultures, when women have sex with men before marriage it brings shame on them and their families. No similar shame is brought on a mans family if he has sex before marriage. The Quran doesnt make any distinction between the sin of the two people involved, though. When the rule is bent to bring more shame and harsh punishments on women, it means women have a lot to lose if they have sex before marriage, while men do not face the same risks. The rule works to control women, but it allows men to do what they wish. Another reason sex is a hot topic among Muslims has to do with politics. Many Islamic countries were colonized by non-Muslim European countries. The colonial rulers replaced

Islamic legal systems with European laws. Even after the colonial rulers left, many Muslims felt as if their way of life was threatened. Some Muslims who immigrate to the U.S. or other western countries also fear that their culture will be lost in their new country. When people feel threatened and fearful, they often try to keep control over whatever they can. Limiting sex and womens rights can seem like easy ways to feel more in control. 0 Reply 0 Rate This

That is very interesting! Does your movement allow also for a gay couple to be voted in office as the Head of the State? Would his gay partner become the First Ladyman? If a picture of them would be required on the note of USA dollar whom would you choose bum? You disgust us dude! Stop teaching us your regressive principles as they are nothing but full of bulls!

Some of those sources disagree with each other and most are based on the opinions of human beings. A formal

marriage would include witnesses and the marriage agreement might be written down and signed. Same-sex couples may have or raise children but, for them, having children is not an accidental side-effect of having sex. The early Muslim jurists wanted to avoid situations where a child was born without the support a father could bring. Mission: Muslims for Progressive Values (MPV) is an inclusive community rooted in the traditional Quranic ideals of human dignity and social justice. We welcome all who are interested in discussing, promoting and working for the implementation of progressive values human rights, freedom of expression, and separation of church and state as well as inclusive and tolerant understandings of Islam. BUILDING A PROGRESSIVE MUSLIM COMMUNITY Too often Muslims in America are asked where are the progressives amongst us? Arent there any Muslims who are for womens reproductive rights, for LGBTQ rights, for the separation of Religion and State? Muslims for Progressive Values has been in existence since 2007. Quietly and diligently we have been building our progressive community, one city at a time, and now one country at a time. In the short time since its inception in Los Angeles, we have expanded to include chapters in Washington DC, Atlanta, Salt Lake City, Columbus (OH), as well as Ottawa and Toronto, Canada.

We assert that Islam is inherently progressive, inclusive and egalitarian; an understanding from which our community is built on and that informs the ten principles of MPV. 0 Reply 0 Rate This
