NSCF SUPPLEMENTAL FILE CODEBOOK

This codebook documents the contents of the National Survey of SSI Children and Families (NSCF) Supplemental File (NSCFSUPP1.sas7bdat). The file was prepared in response to comments and suggestions related to the first version of the NSCF public and restricted use data files. The supplemental file addresses both SSI’s request for the public release of additional information about NSCF respondents and resolving anomalies noted on the previously released files. Specifically, the supplemental file: • makes the gender variable available to users of the public file. In consultation with SSA, SSA administrative variables, including gender, were excluded from the previously-released public use file. SSA has agreed to make the gender variable indicator available. removes an anomaly in the public use variables for sample member age, mother’s age and father’s age. Ineligible cases had erroneously been assigned to the variable’s bottom-coded value (age 4). removes an inconsistency introduced during data imputation, in which indicators of SSI receipt (C_SSI_EVER and C_SSI_LAST_MONTH) were not properly updated to reflect imputed monthly SSI amounts (C_SSI_LAST_MONTH_AMT) adds convenience recodes to assist users who wish to compare their analyses with existing publications that use NSCF data. Summary variables used in Estimating the Size and Characteristics of the SSI Child Population: A Comparison Between the NSCF and Three National Surveys, (Ireys, et al), are provided.1

The supplemental file is intended to be used in conjunction with both the public (NSCF_PUF.sas7bdat) and restricted use (NSCFFINALFILE092003.sas7bdat) data files. The unique record identifier variable MPRID is provided to allow the data from the supplemental file to be merged with the other files.

Minor differences may be observed between the contents of this file and the Ireys, et al. publication due to data editing and cleaning performed subsequent to the preparation of the Ireys publication.
