A Theosophical Lodge (or a Theosophical Society) should, by virtue of its very name, be an embodiment of Theosophy, that is, an organism

able to manifest, in its collective life as well as in the individual life of its members, and to radiate into other organisms; THEOSOPHY in the same way in which man, if he be a great and owerful factor in society, must needs be the im ersonification of an ideal or set of ideals, and a center wherefrom the magnetism of this articular ideal radiates, influencing the lives of his fellow!men individually and the culture of the social body of which he is a member collectively" The ideal ma#es the man" THEOSOPHY ma#es the T"S" $odge in its ideal form" %f a Society or lodge, calling themselves &Theoso hical,& do not embody nor radiate THEOSOPHY, they are counterfeits, which in the world of business would be unished by the laws, which the 'reat $aw of (arma must, sooner or later, ta#e into account" What then is THE S !H", this ideal or soul, which all Theoso hical organisms, societies and lodges ali#e, must incarnate and im ersonate, if they be true to their name and honest towards themselves) Theoso hy, as a system, cannot ossibly be understood e*ce t the nature of man, as a com le* and Trinitarian being be first gras ed, e*ce t the two streams of evolution that concur to ma#e the resent +an be firmly a rehended" +an ,male or female- is first in time a art of a great com ound .enter of energy, or /eing, which we call a Planet" 0 Planet, as all organisms do, asses through successive cycles of manifestation and non!manifestation, that is, incarnates over and over again" Our Earth!.hain is the resent incarnation of that com ound center which, in its last incarnation, constituted the +oon!.hain, the last remnant of which is seen in the resent globe which we call the moon" 0s a fragment of the Earth!.enter as +an is, therefore, the re!a arition of an analogically related fragment of the $unar .enter and by fragment is meant here1 a little center within the 'reat .enter" %n other words, a human being is at first the reincarnation of a lunar entity" This entity has reached a certain oint of develo ment at the end of the +oon!.hain; it will rogress further normally during the Earth!.hain" 2uring the +oon!.hain it has learnt to res onse to the cosmic vibration 3, for instance" %t has embodied u to a degree of relative erfection a certain .osmic Princi le; it has embodied the life of a certain $ogos to the limits of its res onsiveness" 4ow, as it a ears u on the soil of rimeval Earth, it is wor#ing towards a new, higher goal, towards the manifestation of the ne*t cosmic vibration, or rinci le; that is, following the revious e*am le, the vibration 5" This human entity, center within the great $unar .enter ,monad within the great $unar +onad- as it rea ears in the Earth .enter, manifests as a Human !ersonality, that is a com ound entity com osed of 3 elements, or develo ing, both successively and simultaneously its three as ects1 #nowledge, love and activity" This human ersonality is said to re resent the watery element in +an, and to be devoid of fire, that is to say of the rinci le of self#immorality, which rinci le is the characteristic of the Soul" 6 to the middle of the Third 7oot!7ace human beings were solely human personalities, and no fire dwelt in them" Then, as the 8ourth 7ace was near its re aratory stage, that is, as the vibration 5 was nearing its eriod of definitive manifestation with the Earth!.hain ,in this 5th 7ace of the 5th 7ound-, a new vibration was su erim osed to the fundamental note of Earth" The vibration 9 thrilled through S ace from some lanetary .enter within the solar orb, and, brea#ing through all the globes or layers of our Planetary .hain, TOO( 8O7+ u on our Physical Earth, giving its ba tism of fire, its Soul to our Planet, to our Humanity" This &form& ta#en by the new cosmic vibration, its synthetic reality, 9 ,as a treble otentiality-, the Holy !entagram, S040T, becomes multi le" The 7oot of all #nowledge and s irituality became the Tree, became the &6ndying 7ace,& the many Pentagrams, the :ise Ones, the &essential soul& of Humanity" 0nd not only did the Holy !entagrams ta#e form, in order to manifest u on Earth the 0rchety al 7eality of the ;ibration!form, the mastery of which they had attained in the revious cycle or system" but they gave to all the evolving human personalities ,which then constituted earthly humanity- s ar#s of their

8ire, emanation from their own essence" Thus to every ersonality became attached ,symbolically s ea#ing- a soul!germ; in the ersonal!human soil were lanted SEE2S, seeds, whose #ey!vibration was therefore 9 in other words, otential Pentagrams" This occurred for this reason1 had human ersonalities been left alone in their effort fully to manifest the vibration 5 of the 5th 7oot!7ace, they would have failed, because of the influence of the Past, or their $unar ast, dead, yet alive in them, as the owerful force of %nertia, ever resisting motion, that is, rogress" This ower of %nertia, this astward attraction had to be neutrali<ed, or else failure was certain" Such is the $aw, which $aw is in fact the $aw of Sacrifice; for the ower of Sacrifice alone can neutrali<e the forces of %nertia" The attraction futureward neutrali<es the attraction astward" 4o such neutrali<ation, however, is ossible e*ce t beings who are the future descend into the resent to redeem it from the thralldom of the Past" +athematically s ea#ing ,n- can only rogress toward the condition of ,n=>- when ,n=>- descends into ,n- to fight there and neutrali<e the influence of ,n!>-" 8or a Pentagram to descend into the s here of the tetragrams ,vi<", $ower ?uaternary of +an, or ersonalities- in order to redeem them from the influence of the &lower triangles,& this is Sacrifice" This is also what may be called &Transvolution,& that is a mode of evolution which, to the lower entities which are blessed by it, a ears as an involution; a brea#ing &through& lower s heres in order to attract their deni<ens u ward" Thus the Holy !entagrams, sacrificing themselves in order to counteract the downward tendencies of hysically awa#ened and mentally inci ient +an, manifested u on Earth at the moment when the 5th 7oot!7ace was nearing its re aratory stage, and im lanted in Humanity the seed of the future cosmic vibration, the image of the Pentagram, a otential Soul" Everything in the .osmos manifesting in three as ects, the souls as well as the ersonalities, are threefold, and, to the ersonal #nowledge corres ond a soul!#nowledge, to the ersonal love a soul!love, to the ersonal activities a soul!activity" %n other words the ersonality manifests #nowledge, love and activity in their 8O67TH stage of manifestations; the soul, or Ego, manifests #nowledge, love and activity in their 8%8TH stage of manifestation; this in terms of the scale of erfection of the Planetary $ogos in the body of which we are atoms striving after synthetic erfection" 4ow the vibration 9 is related es ecially to this as ect of the triune Soul ,the higher Triad of +04, that is the ne$ Planetary $ogos, the body of whom $e are building-, which is %anas, or +ind, or (nowledge" (nowledge which is of the Soul manifests as :isdom" This :isdom which %S the +anas as ect of +04 that is 'od, this is THEO!SOPH%0" The embodiment of this 9, of this cosmic vibration attracting Humanity u ward and futureward, is Theoso hy, the :isdom of the Soul of +04, the becoming $ogos" Theoso hy, therefore, is a sacrificial gift from those Holy Pentagrams transvolving ,for them evolving toward /liss- on Earth, something that descended from above, that did not evolve, that, by its very nature, cannot ever evolve" %t is a seed lanted in the fermenting soil of the ersonally human mind, which ersonal mind is but the a e* ,at resent- of the lunar!terrestrial evolution, the best thing which we, human e*!lunar monads, have been able to roduce in our s here of e* ression1 the Planet Earth" 4ow this seed may or may not germinate" :here the soil is good, there the seed will germinate; where bad, it will not" However, good or bad, mean ,>- rich in earthly salts or devoided of them ,@-, cultivated or untilled" The Holy !entagrams are the 'ardeners in their activity as ect ,Atma-; they toil, and as they toil they water the field, the water ,love buddhi- being brought through great efforts and sweat ,the salted sweat symboli<ing the bitterness of the ersonal self which leaves the body of the gardeners through their s#in, only as they toil in sacrificial gift-" %n other words, through the united gift of the germinal po$er manifested in the seed ,;enus-, the atoning or dissolving po$er

in the :ater ,+ariah, the Sea1 +ercury-, the life#guiding po$er * ressed in the 'ardeners ,.hristos-, the germ grows and becomes in its turn a tree, shedding its shadow u on another art of the soil, thus rotecting it from being burnt by the physical Sun, opposing the sunshine" ,Thus are the Pentagrams called by Sun!ins ired religious1 the 0dversaries, the 7ebels"- 0s the germs grow they ta#e from the soil and give bac# to the soil; and this illustrates Auite accurately the relation between Ego ,germ and lant- and the Personality ,the Soil-" Theoso hy therefore is a gift, and cannot be understood e* ect it be considered as such" 0ll the owers of our ersonal humanity or rather rae!humanity, as +an is a soul could not evolve Theoso hy" The greatest minds of earth f divorced from or unlin#ed as yet with their soul all together could not evolve Theoso hy in this present &ound; and should there be no struggling souls no$ on Earth, there would be in a way no 8ifth 7ound for our Planet, as there would be no seeds ,shista- for it" This means therefore that the $ay of a roach to, and the attitude toward Theoso hy +6ST be essentially different from the way in which to study, say, Philoso hy or +athematics" :e must come to Theoso hy as we receive a gift" There is no gift which does not resu ose a 'iver" Theosophy al$ays presupposes a 'uru, from the +aha!'uru down to the smallest &s iritual& teacher" This leads us to e*amine the way in which we come in contact with Theoso hy, incarnation after incarnation" 0s the seen of wheat archety ally e*ists as a ractically immutable reality, out of which are fashioned by deva!builders numberless grains of wheat which are lanted every autumn, rest during the winter, germinate during s ring, and fructify in the summer; so Theoso hy archety ally %S as an unchangeable reality throughout the myriad of cycles of a +anvantara, and yet seeds of theoso hy are lanted in the human soil every fall, when a cycle decays and ends" 'reater cycles there are, embracing whole <odiacal years, and smaller ones recurring every .entury" 0s the .entury enters its last or autumnal Auarter, the seed is lanted; the new .entury begins after .hristmas ,B days in the yearly cycle of 3B9 units, therefore about two years and a half in the century cycle-, its Sun entering then .a ricorn, the 'ate of the 0vatar" %t is winter time" %f the seed is not fro<en by the cold winds of materialism ,that is, if the seed has been lanted deep enough into the soil and the old roots have been enough destroyed- then, as S ring begins, as 0ries a ears ,the .reator-, the germ ierces the earthly crust and ascends toward fruitfulness" Taurus gives its $ife! ower and direction ,discrimination-, 'emini form, .ancer water that causes growth, $eo warms its and brings the nu tial hour" ;irgo liberates toward s irit, and starts the involution of the future essence, $ibra mar#s the gift of the fruit to the Thirstied Ones, and with it 8all a ears again, decay, and the new sowing for the ne*t harvest" The four seasons corres ond to the four Auarters of the .entury; every <odiacal sign re resents a com lete eight years cycle, lus the transition" (ut $hat is the Seed) The Seed is one among the numerous, essentially identical yet outwardly differentiated seeds that have their source and higher, four!dimensional reality in THE Seed, &that bread that came down from Heavens& as Cesus said symbolically" /ut the seed is also a $ife, the $ife of the +essenger, or messengers, who oured their very blood into it so that it might live, who moistened the soil of the field with the tears of sacrifice" (nowledge, as ersonalities #now it, needs no blood, no tears, no $ife to ri en" %t is a weed, however beautiful it may be, beautiful but fruitless" :isdom which is $ove radiating through sacrifice1 Theoso hy this wisdom .044OT be se arated from the $ife, from the $omb that bore it" Therefore, whenever Theoso hy is found and the +essenger who &transmitted& it is recogni<ed as such, the human being who is inwardly &hungry& for the &/read of $ife,& who has tasted of all ersonal foods and has been satiated and nauseated by them, who

longs in his heart and mind for Truth if he wishes truly to be reDuvenated by Theoso hy, must come to its study in an attitude of spiritual gratitude" However, two oints are essentially to be considered in this res ect1 ,>- 4o one can say truly that he has &found Theoso hy,& that he has found the $iving .hrist of :isdom incarnated, e*ce t he has tested the finding over and over again in mental earnestness and a s irit of unemotional higher criticism; e*ce t he has as#ed for roofs, both obDectively and subDectively and has not found them wanting" ,@- This being done, the student or would!be disci le must not fail to differentiate within himself personal devotion from soul#devotion, reDect the former and acce t the latter; for the former breeds fanaticism and sectarianism" Soul!devotion is the as iration of the s ar# of fire within towards reabsor tion into the 8lame whence it originated; it is an as iration towards $holeness, rooted in that love which #nows itself as inde endent from the changing ersonalities, recogni<e only as the offerings to be burnt u on the altar of sacramental activity" Having seen now what Theoso hy is, what rinci le in +an will res ond to it if there is a sufficient yearning in the lower man to neutrali<e the force of %nertia of its vehicle and rinci les, and how Theoso hy must be recogni<ed and a roached, we must come now from the general to the articular and consider our resent cycle and the osition in which our generation stands" The Theoso hical Society in its original and now une*istent form was founded by HP/, Olcott and Cudge in the fall of >EF9, the last Auarter of the year ushering in the last Auarter of the century" Of the three co!founders, HP/ was the only source whereform teachings originally flowed" Olcott wrote ractically nothing e*ce t his &/uddhist .atechism& and his own biogra hy in connection with the T"S" Cudge ac#nowledge in all his writings HP/ as his Teacher and as the fountainhead of Theoso hy in this resent cycle" The Secret 2octrine ,together with the other e* lanatory or subsidiary wor#s of HP/- is therefore the Primeval 0tom ,046, the One- of the Soul!:isdom incarnating through HP/ in the .entury; it is the .enter of Soul!:isdom, the radiating Pentagram, the focus from within which or through which 0$$ the Soul!energies that can ossibly ervade this .entury will be oured" %t is the &Swayambhuva& of this little cosmos1 our .entury, the nucleolus of its Egoic egg" This, however, refers O4$Y to the Ego of the .entury, not to its personality" %t does not mean that all cosmic or all creative energies which will build or are building this .entury, its humanity, its culture, etc", must ass through HP/" This would be a non!sense" 8orces are ceaselessly ouring into manifestation, movements, organisms, ideals are constantly formed ,es ecially today as the centurial &s ring& is at hand- which are essential, and rooted in the most high Energies" However, these do 4OT ertain to the Ego, do 4OT build the Ego or soul of the .entury" They build its !ersonality" They are the reincarnation of the high or low $unar Energies, that is of the ?uaternary of our Planetary $ogos, 4ot of his Higher Triad" 0ll this being understood, we come bac# to our starting oint" :hat is the duty of a Theoso hical organism, lodge, or society) :hat is the 2harma of a Theoso hist, as Theoso hist) To T&A*S%+T and &A,+ATE into the collective being of the -entury the Soul# Energies '+.E* through and by H!(/ This duty, therefore, is two!fold, a lying as it were to two different ty es of beings1 the Transmitters and the &adiators, that is those who diffuse the teachings and reserve their integrity, and those who ermeate the undifferentiated, inorganic or soulless human material of the .entury with the differentiated, organi<ing and s irituali<ing soul!energies liberated by and focused through HP/ in her dual as ect as soul and as ersonality" These two ty es of duty may or may not be included within the $odgeGs or SocietyGs scheme of activity" 4o Theoso hical %ovement however is com lete or fruitful without both these duties being erformed either by se arate organi<ations or by individuals belonging to one all!embracing organi<ation" .onsidering the Theoso hical %ncarnation as a whole, we discover therefore in it the wor# of
