Knit Your Own Zoo
Easy-to-Follow Patterns for 24 Animals
Sally Muir and Joanna Osborne
From the authors of the beloved and best-selling
Knit Your Own Dog, Knit Your Own Cat, and Knit Your
Own Dog: The Second Litter comes Knit Your Own
Zoo! With easy-to-follow, step-by-step instructions
for 24 animals, it’s an irresistible guide to knitting a
single exotic pet or an entire stuffed menagerie.
W
hat could be better than a cuddly koala or a long-necked
giraffe to call your own? Knit Your Own Zoo includes
patterns for both, as well as a tiger, crocodile, penguin, meerkat,
elephant, giraffe, panda, a kangaroo and her joey, and 14
other delightful creatures. The animals are surprisingly easy to
make; with a few evenings of work, you can have a covetable
companion for life. Given a week, you could be charging
admission to your own nature park!
Along with the knitting patterns, Sally and Joanna also include
brief descriptions of the various species and offer tips and
advice on sewing up and embellishing the animals.
And, of course, these knitted animals are much easier to look
after than the real things—they don’t eat, won’t make a mess,
and are legal to keep in your home.
Sally Muir and Joanna Osborne run their own knitwear business, Muir
and Osborne (www.muirandosborne.co.uk). They have a shop in London
and export their knitwear to stores in the U.S., Japan, and Europe,
including Barneys, Saks, Liberty, and The Cross. They won the U.K.
Fashion Export Small Business Award in 2002, and several pieces of
their knitwear are in the permanent collection at the Victoria and Albert
Museum in London. Their previous books include Knit Your Own Dog,
Knit Your Own Cat, and Knit Your Own Dog: The Second Litter. They live
in the U.K.

The National Wildlife Federation is America’s premier nonprofit
conservation organization. Its mission is to protect wildlife for
our children’s future. As the largest grassroots conservation
organization in the country, the NWF boasts more than 4 million
supporters and 47 state affiliates. Its magazines include National
Wildlife Magazine (adults), Ranger Rick (children ages 7–12),
Ranger Rick Jr. (children ages 4–7), and Wild Baby Animals
(toddlers).
Kim Kurki has created fine-art illustrations focusing on the
natural world for more than 30 years, including work for several
publications produced by Yankee Publishing, such as The Old
Farmer’s Almanac.
For more than eight years, she wrote and illustrated for National
Wildlife Federation’s Your Big Backyard magazine, creating a
monthly column that featured birds, animals, and plants that
children can find in their own backyard. She lives in Penns Park,
Pennsylvania.
F
rom the National Wildlife Federation, publishers
of Ranger Rick, the popular nature magazine for
kids, comes this exciting, dynamic, and wonderfully
illustrated guide for young naturalists.
The National Wildlife Federation’s World of Birds
identifies more than 120 birds from around the world,
including the cardinal, woodpecker, starling, goldfinch,
blue jay, robin, and Canada goose, to name just a few.
Each bird is featured on colorful, illustrated, information-
packed pages, which include details on its size, shape,
color, and markings, as well as its habitat, call, and
behavior. The illustrations, by National Wildlife Federation
artist Kim Kurki, are engaging and highly accurate, giving
kids a true and close-up appreciation of the many details
of each species. The text is lively and clearly written,
providing all the information necessary to recognize
each type of bird, as well as a solid introduction to
each bird’s individual characteristics. A visual table of
contents allows for quick identification.
The excellent illustrations, nontechnical language, and
fascinating facts throughout make this an ideal guide for
beginner bird-watchers—of any age!

Janine Benyus is a biologist, innovation consultant, and
author of six books, including Biomimicry: Innovation
Inspired by Nature. She is the founder of the Biomimicry
3.8 Institute, whose mission is to nurture and grow a global
community of people who are learning from, emulating,
and conserving life’s genius to create a healthier, more
sustainable planet. Clients and partners in this endeavor
include General Electric, Nike, Boeing, and Proctor &
Gamble. Benyus has received several awards, including Time
magazine’s Heroes of the Environment award and the Rachel
Carson Environmental Ethics Award. She lives in Missoula,
Montana.
Juan Carlos Barberis was the staff artist and illustrator for the
Museum of Natural History in New York City for 20 years.
I
n The Secret Language of Animals, biologist Janine
Benyus takes us inside the animal kingdom and shows
us the whys and the hows behind the distinctive behavior
of creatures great and small in their natural environments.
Divided geographically into five sections—Africa, Asia,
North America, the oceans, and the poles—the book
examines and describes the behavior, body language, and
patterns of communication of 20 different animals: the
gorilla, lion, African elephant, plains zebra, black rhinoceros,
giraffe, ostrich, greater famingo, Nile crocodile, giant
panda, peacock, Komodo monitor, bottlenose dolphin,
California sea lion, gray wolf, bald eagle, sandhill crane,
beluga whale, polar bear, and Adélie penguin.
For each animal, Benyus describes and explains
basic behaviors (locomotion, feeding, drinking, bathing,
grooming, sleeping), communication behavior (greeting,
social play, group defense, conflict, aggression/submission,
fighting, courtship, copulation), and parenting behavior
(birth, care and feeding, teaching, communal care).
The book is illustrated throughout with tender yet
precise line drawings that beckon us to the animals and
vividly capture everything from changing facial expressions
to nurturing postures to playful and aggressive interactions.
The text, too, is both intimate and informative, allowing for
a deep connection with, and a great admiration for, each
one of the animals.

e transported to New York during the Gilded Age and
experience daily life in one of the world’s most vibrant
cities through mesmerizing, contemporary 3D photography
and exciting tales of the time.
Black Dog & Leventhal has partnered with the New-
York Historical Society to present New York in the Gilded
Age as it’s never been viewed before. This innovative
package includes a sturdy metal stereoscopic viewer and
50 stereoscopic photographs of turn-of-the-century New
York. The package also includes a 128-page paperback that
provides a brief history of the stereograph craze and an
overview of the city’s evolution during that time.
New York City in 3D in the Gilded Age details the rapid
growth of Manhattan from 1877 to 1910, when nearly half
of the millionaires in America lived in the city. Enduring
structures such as the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge,
Grand Central Station, Ellis Island Immigration Station, and
the first skyscrapers were built during this time, culminating
in the construction of the 47-story Singer Building in 1908.
The 50 stereoscopic images include Coney Island lit up at
night; a view of Madison Square Garden in 1900 from the top
of the Flatiron Building; peddlers’ carts on Elizabeth Street
in 1904; the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge in 1880; the
Ellis Island dining room in 1907; and Times Square with the
new Astor Hotel in 1908.
Detailed descriptions of the scenes depicted in each
stereographic photograph are included on the back of the photo.
The New-York Historical Society, one of America’s pre-eminent
cultural institutions, is dedicated to fostering research, presenting
history and art exhibitions, and offering public programs that reveal
the dynamism of history and its influence on the world of today.
Founded in 1804, the New-York Historical Society’s museum is
the oldest in New York City and predates the founding of the
Metropolitan Museum of Art by nearly seventy years. Its art
holdings comprise more than 1.6 million works.
Esther Crain is a native New Yorker who edits and writes for
magazines. In 2008 she launched Ephemeral New York, a website
that chronicles bits and pieces of the city’s past through photos,
newspaper articles, art, and other artifacts. The site receives 5,000
hits a day and has been profiled in numerous publications, including
New York Daily News, Time Out New York, and New York Post.
She lives in New York.

365 More Simple
Science Experiments
with Everyday Materials
E. Richard Churchill, Louis V. Loeschnig,
and Muriel Mandell
Illustrated by Frances W. Zweifel
Volume Two in Black Dog’s best-selling Simple
Science Experiments collection, 365 More Simple
Science Experiments with Everyday Materials has a
fresh new look at a great new price.
W
ith 365 More Simple Science Experiments, kids ages
9 through 12 get a year’s worth of fun and educational
hands-on experiments while gaining knowledge of the
fundamentals of science—including concepts such as gravity,
electricity, magnification, magnetism, oxidation, and more—that
will last a lifetime.
The hundreds of experiments are divided into 32 chapters,
the first seven of which focus on experiments that demonstrate
basic principles of physics using materials in the natural world. In
the next eight chapters kids learn about science using common
foods, discovering the answers to such questions as “Why do
we cry when peeling an onion?” and “Is a raw carrot healthier
than a cooked one?” The next seven chapters tackle concepts
having to do with time and space, and the following seven
explain some puzzling ideas about nature. The final chapters
explore the science of outer space.
Most of the experiments are easy enough for kids to execute
on their own, though a few may require the aid of a parent or
partner. Kids will learn how to make vinegar, milk a potato,
catch sound, stick a pin in a balloon without popping it,
and make 1 + 1 not equal 2.
This book is perfect for kids who like to explore the natural
world or are looking for something fun and inexpensive to create
for a science fair.
E. Richard Churchill, Louis V. Loeschnig, and Muriel Mandell are
authors of books in the No-Sweat Science series, published by Sterling
Publishers. They each have written several other science-related books
for children and young adults.
Frances W. Zweifel is a published author and an illustrator of books for
children and young adults. Among her other books are Optical Illusion
Experiments and Science Fair Projects: Chemistry.

The New York Times
The Times of the Sixties
The Culture, Politics, and Personalities
that Shaped the Decade
Edited with commentary by John Rockwell
There is no better record of events than The New
York Times, and now The Times of the Sixties
captures the history, culture, and personalities of
the decade through hundreds of articles and original
commentary in this unique and fascinating book.
W
hether we lived through them or learned of them after
the fact, the events of the 1960s— the beginning of the
Vietnam War, the moon landing, the hippie movement, to name
just a few—resonate strongly in our culture today.
The Times of the Sixties represents one of the most
fascinating, extensive, and well-rounded portraits of one of
modern history’s most tumultuous decades. More than 400
articles have been culled from the archives of The New York
Times and brilliantly curated by staff writer John Rockwell.
Articles feature coverage of historic events like the Cuban
missile crisis, Martin Luther King’s I Have A Dream speech, the
assassination of President Kennedy; cultural highlights such as
the British Invasion, movie reviews of Psycho, 2001: A Space
Odyssey, and To Kill a Mockingbird, and features on music
groups like the Supremes; plus pieces on pivotal political figures
like John F. Kennedy, Mao Zedong, and Che Guevara, as well as
influential personalities such as Muhammad Ali, Marilyn Monroe,
and Betty Friedan.
Rockwell guides readers through the articles he’s selected,
putting the events into historical context and exploring the
far-reaching impact of these events and individuals. The book
also includes hundreds of black-and-white and color photographs
from the Times and other sources.
The New York Times is regarded as the world’s preeminent newspaper.
Its news coverage is known for its exceptional depth and breadth,
with reporting bureaus throughout the United States and in 26 foreign
countries. Winner of 106 Pulitzer Prizes, the Times has the largest
circulation of any seven-day newspaper in the U.S.
John Rockwell is a journalist, music critic, and editor. In 1972 he began
writing at The New York Times, first as a classical-music critic and
reporter, then as the paper’s chief pop-music critic, and, from 1992 to
1994, as the European cultural correspondent. He became the editor of
the paper’s Sunday Arts and Leisure section in 1998 and in 2004 was
named chief dance critic. He lives in New York.
