TRANSDUCERS IN INSTRUMENTATION (Common to Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering and Electronics and Control Engineering) Time: 3hours Max.Marks:80 Answer any FIVE questions All questions carry equal marks ---Define the terms (i) linearity (ii) Hysterisis (iii) threshold (iv) Resolution. A 10 K Ω variable resistance has a linearity of 0.1% and the movement of contact arm is 320o (i) determine the maximum position deviation in degrees and the resistance deviation in ohm. If the instrument is to be used as a potentiometer with a linear scale of 0 to 1.6 volt, determine the maximum voltage error Explain why it is necessary to carryout frequency domain analysis of measurement systems? What are the two plots obtained when the frequency response of a system is carried out? A first order system when subjected to a step input has a temperature rise of 25oC after one hour and 37.5o after two hours starting from cold conditions. Calculate its final steady temperature rise and the thermal time constant. What is a strain gauge? Name four resistance materials for use in wire and foil gauges. What are the units for strain? Discuss the principle of operation of the strain gauge with relevant sketches. A resistance strain gauge with a gauge factor of 2 is fastened to a member, which is subjected to a strain of 1 X 10-6. If the original resistance value of the gauge is 130, calculate the change in resistance. Show how output voltage signals proportional to linear displacements imparted to the movable plate of a parallel plate capacitor. Discuss the problems encountered while measuring small displacements by capacitive transducers. Describe the different modes of operation of Piezo electric transducers. Define and sketch binders and twisters. Explain the application of Piezo electric transducers. What is meant by ‘The Force-balance principle’. The dead-zone of a certain plyrometer is 0.125 percent of the span. The calibration is 800oC to 1800oC what temperature change must occur before it is detected? Derive the differential equation describing the dynamics of mechanical translational system subjected to a step input force. Draw up a table showing analogy between mechanical and electrical quantities based upon force-voltage analogy . An RC circuit consists of 1 µF in series with a resistor of 5KΩ. A D.C voltage of 50 volts is suddenly applied across the circuit. Calculate the value of voltage after (i) 5 m sec. (ii) 25 m sec. What is the difference between metallic & semiconductor strain gauges? Describe the principle of working & constructional details of the bonded type strain gauge. How is the force on cantilever beam measured by using strain gauge elements? Find the output in volts/micro strain. Show that a parallel plate capacitor serves as the most suitable transducer for measurement of linear and angular displacements. Discuss the problems encountered while measuring small displacements by capacitive transducers. A flat frequency response within 10% is required from a piezoelectric crystal. Find the value of minimum frequency for which it can be used if the time constant is 2ms. Find also the phase shift. How will you measure oscillations using piezoelectric pick up. With a schematic diagram, explain the working of Electrodynamic Force-balance transducer for the measurement of linear acceleration. Explain the static performance of an Electrodynamic Force-balance acceleration transducer with respect to sensitivity and linearity.

Derive the differential equation describing the time response of a series R-L-C circuit when a step voltage is applied to it. A measuring system has an exponential response to step input. The time constant of the system is 2 sec. what is the time required for reading (i) 50% (ii) 80% of final steady state reading? What are RTD's, and on what basic principle do they work? Explain their construction. The resistance of a platinum resistance thermometer element at 150C is required to be 50 ohms. Determine the length of the wire needed if the diameter of the wire is 0.25 mm. Assuming that the temperature coefficient of resistance of the wire is constant, calculate the element resistance's at '0' and 100°C. Assume missing data. Explain how moisture content in grain, and granulated powder can be measured by means of a capacitive transducer. Is it possible to measure relative humidity by means of a capacitive transducer? Show how the capacitance variation is measured. How the piezoelectric pick-up is useful for measuring torque and explain the same. Piezoelectric crystal as a measuring element" Explain it clearly. A 0-150V voltmeter has a guaranteed accuracy of 1% of full scale reading. The voltage measured by this instrument is 75V. Calculate the limiting error in percent. Comment upon the result. Derive the expression for time response of a 2nd order under damped system when subjected to unit step input. Sketch its response. A thermometer is initially at a temperature of 70oC and is suddenly placed in liquid which is maintained at 300o+C. The thermometer indicates 200oC after a time interval of 3 sec. calculate the time constant for the thermometer. Also calculate the temperature after 5 sec. What is a thermistor? How is it used for temperature measurement, for various applications? The temperature of an oven is raised at the rate of 200°C per hour. For the condition that the indicating instrument must not show an error more than 50C what is the maximum permissible time constant? What are the limitations of thermistor? Explain how by using a differential arrangement a capacitive transducer which works on the principle of variation of capacitance with displacement between two plates, the response can be made linear. Describe the frequency response of capacitive transducers Why the piezo electric transducer cannot be used for measurement of static displacement. Explain the concept of piezo electric accelerometer with neat sketch. Starting from fundamentals, derive the expression for linearized sensitivity of Electrostatic Force-balance transducer.
