PROJECT 1 SHARJAH ART MUSEUM

The museum of the moving image is located in Sharjah, between high rised residential buildings. The idea was having a building that enforces itself in that area and using material that is alienates the museum from the surroundings . The museum has an existing structure which is the steel frame. `The structure was exposed where there are the gallery areas and was hidden in the services.

The material of the faade is stone cladding. The type was used is sand stone. It is a thin cladding that is supported by metal stud as a secondary supporting structure. The reason for the thin cladding is 80% less weight than solid stone. This weight savings alone provides huge savings in installation labor, structural requirements, and installing time. Besides, the stone is a natural material which is environmentally friendly. Between the metal stud and the stone cladding there is insulation and air gab. The load of the stone is carried by metal angles. The secondary structural elements together with the stone cladding form the thick wall that represents the massiveness of the stone which was the intention as the building expresses its massiveness in the area that was built on. In the cantilevered part of the building, a different type of stone used which is the slate stone stack that was inspired by Zumthor project (the thermal baths). The purpose was to create juxtaposition between the building and the extrusion part of it. The extrusion was used as a balcony that is not covered by the roof or interrupted by the columns which creates different environment from the covered exterior part of the building. The material of the ooring is white marble tiles. They reect the luxurious quality of the building. Also, it is important to have the consistency of the materials as the marble is considered as stone. Therefore, the marble with the faade unify the interior of the building with the exterior, but also it differentiates the faade from the oor. The tiles sit on the concrete slab which is tied to by the mortar bed. While the roof of the building is metal roof tiles since it is not accessible. The window consists of two panels of glass. These two panels have air gap which reduces the thermal bridging. The window size is 1.6x 1.6 meters to create a consistent square shape that is repeated in the tiles. The window frame is aluminum that is exposed. The reason was to emphasize the windows and express its massiveness. In the end, the people is an experiential material where people interact with it as they touch and feel the material of the building. It creates a different special and emotional quality to the people who visit the museum.

PROJECT 2 SHARJAH ART MUSEUM WEAVING THE HINTERLAND

AUS

Through the collages, I tried to connect the lines of the city (streets) together. These lines weaved together to create a new network. I began experimenting with the weaving technique physically using stripes of paper weaved together in a systematic way. The weaving creates perfect square perforations. Applying the forces of pulling the stripes generates two main elements: the lines of forces and the points of deformation. The lines of the forces (the city lines) impose the deformation of weaving skin. You can trace the lines through the deformation of the perforations on skin. I chose Dubai Khor to use the lines of the site and establish a performance center. The lines of the site create the deformation on the weaved skin and underground. The size of the deformation indicates the importance of the space underneath.
