us) The following article is part of materials being prepared for a book on the subj ect of astral projection. It is a work-in-progress and may be periodically updat ed. The author hosts the Astral Projection Home Page. This article focuses on the "experience" part of out-of-body experiences ("OOBEs "). It describes the feelings, sights and sounds common to the process by which the astral body separates either partially or completely from the physical body. It also lists some of the attitudes held by successful OOBErs. Many people new to the process are quite surprised and often relieved to learn that their "stran ge" experiences are in fact perfectly natural and fairly common. Depending on your experience level, you might be able to relate to some, many or perhaps even all of the items listed below. Your experiences may well exceed th ose presented here. This article is cumulative -- it lists as many experiences a s I could bring to mind. A typical OOBE will probably not include everything con tained in the list. After 50 or 100 OOBEs, however, you will probably recognize many of the items with a knowing smile. A little bit about this approach -- there are literally dozens of techniques whi ch may be used to leave the body. For newcomers, it might seem that many of them are confusing, inconsistent and complicated. Why is this so? Someone trying to teach an OOBE technique must naturally do so based on his or her particular unde rstanding of the phenomenon -- his or her world view will "color" the presentati on. Consider for a moment the staggering number of religions, philosophies, move ments and beliefs in the world. Now imagine someone from each trying to tell you about OOBEs. They may all be describing the same mountain but they each advocat e a different path to the top! Have you ever been in trance (mind awake/body asleep)? Whether you entered it by dancing around a fire, sitting zazen or progressive relaxation, the results wer e probably remarkably similar. The same is true of OOBEs. The OOBE process itsel f is fairly straightforward and refreshingly untainted by "background belief". There is an exceptionally important reason why you should thoroughly familiarize yourself with the details of the OOBE process. Do you know what it is? When you are "out", LACK OF FAMILIARITY OFTEN RESULTS IN FEAR AND AN IMMEDIATE RETURN TO THE BODY. Fear is like a "proceed directly to jail" card (where the jail is you r physical body). And don't kid yourself, an intellectual understanding alone wo n't do -- your body and especially your Unconscious Mind must become comfortable with the process. Otherwise your fears will run rampant. To summarize, this article should help to make you realize that your own experie nces are natural and fairly common. Relax, you are not alone. In addition, basin g the approach on the experience itself rather than technique helps to minimize the taint of "world view." Finally, knowing the scenery so to speak will help yo u to remain relaxed, focused and composed, which are all essential to OOBE succe ss. The next time you have an OOBE, try to write down your experience (after your re turn to your body, naturally) and identify what you felt, saw, heard and thought at each stage. You might be surprised at the results. Remember -- the answer is

Having said that it is important to take the steps necessary to maintain a healthy body. neat. mu ch of which can only be derived from a healthy physical body (think of it as you r generator).at a deep level something tugs at us. injury. and at higher levels it is neither male nor female. While OOBEs just seem to happen (spontaneously or miraculously) to some people. most sucessful projectors have the attitude that OOBEs are something we "do. physic al limitation.he simply did not want us to burp (because it would disrupt the sitting and our composure)! In addition. Can you? Perhaps. Sometimes people project as a mere point of consciousness. Nevertheless. Can ever yone have a "conscious" OOBE? Probably not. the prop er diet during OOBE training is one which makes you feel healthy. participate in a sport. etc. healthy physical body is far superior to a we ak. or the " in" thing to do -. Heavy (especially meats)." Results are produced by the right knowledge and attitude. Rather. tugging at you. take a break from your OOBE training and go for a walk at the park or beach. can y ou? The memory and feeling is always right there. Therefore. It is neither young nor old. Let your interest take root and grow. There is an unfortunate tendency for some people to become physically weak and mentally disoriented as a result of OOBE training.not just meditation? If you feel yourself becoming "flighty" or disorient ed. many of us are drawn to OOBEs. I was in a class learning to sit zazen many years ago and the teach er mentioned that we should not eat pizza before training. fantastic. We can't really help it.in there! Astral Signposts: OOBEs Are Something You "Do" -. There is nothing wron g with pizza -. The astral body fe els the same as the soul between lives. Are you willing to work at it with no guarantees? Good! Projectors Are Drawn To It. narrow-sigh ted strategy. This may be true but it is at best. I believe th at the pure astral form is always in its prime. Some say that it is easier to project when the body i s physically weak. a weak body negatively affects the mind. Keep in mind that shape is a very flexible thing in the astral. play with your children. It's not that OOBEs are cool.. In addition. There is no magic diet which assures OOBE success. which could disrupt your OOBE training s ession. Wh y do you think the yoga masters and zen priests also practice a physical discipl ine -. a geometric form or as nothing at all discernible. energetic and comfortable. A relaxed. It is better to feel a little hungry while engaged in OOBE training rath . oily or spicy foods might make it difficu lt to train. lon g ago when you were a child and found yourself "out"? You can't forget it. Like moths to flame. You should engage in regular exercise to ensure that you will remain properly grounded. Successful projection requires an abundance of internal energy. a short-term. It may sound like a cliche but the mere fact that you're reading this article means that you are i nterested in this subject and that suggests that you have at some degree of astr al ability. diligent practice. you should not feel too attached to your physical form -." I believe that you can learn to project despite disease. you can project despite the fact that you have metal pins or other foreign objects in your body.
Keep It In Perspective. Falling is another very common fear. give you a free pass to heaven.er than feeling too full. especially for beginners. the most commonly reported OOBE fear is that of getting lost. Some people read about saints or holy people who could leave their bodies and fo olishly think that developing the same ability will make them saintly or holy. Several people have mentioned to me that being a little thirsty is useful. which lists many of the fears people report ba sed on the number of times they have left their bodies. Place a glass of water down the hall or in another room and will yourself to leave yo ur body and go get a drink. practicing a martial art. having the spirit leave the body seems to violate this definition. they did a lot more than that! You have to work on your life! A Fearless. OOBE success comes to those who fully understand the ris ks but are willing to train despite it all. But fear is something which must be managed. An Encompassing Belief System. you might rightfully worry about getting lost.and more import antly your Unconscious Mind -. your conscious mind -. They are something to do. In addition. most of us can't help it anyway -. I do not think it is necessary to be vegetarian but I can appreciate the value o f it. Not suprisingly. you will need to learn to function with non-verbal awareness and this is the antithesis of conventional forms of study such as reading or attendi ng lectures.will create all kinds of roadblocks to your succe ss.we are drawn to it. Suppose you define life as spirit animating the fl esh. etc. OOBEs don't make you enlightened. Also. I do not personally recommend fasting but recognize that it is a par t of many traditions. He menti oned that many of the same people turned out year after year but never wrote any thing at all! Don't become a "fan" of OOBEs. Well. I also kn ow a Zen priest who likes to say that reading an entire library of books on the subject of Zen adds up to less than a pimple on your butt! The same could be sai d about OOBEs. Who You? Yes you! You might have heard or read abou t all sorts of dangers associated with OOBEs. That's how important OOBEs are in the grand scheme of things. Daring Attitude. many seemingly irrational fears are created by the Unconscious Mind because it is uncomfortable with the astral process. Use common sense and take good care of your body. I went to a writer's conference once and talked to one of the speakers. Reading About OOBEs Only Helps So Much. Un less OOBEs fit within your belief system. peo ple who have had many experiences tend to be less fearful. Also keep in mind that as de scribed below. Successful astral projectors have a belief system in which OOBEs are accepted. etc. OOBE Affirmations. Ha ve you asked for its permission and cooperation? Many OOBE fears are based on the wrongful assumption that the astral world is a direct (but less dense) counterpart of the physical world. I believe that there is a "fear barrier" which is designed to keep out curiosity seekers and the timid. Don't let your 3D assumptions get in the way of your OOBE training. Some people find it useful to write and repeat OOBE affirmati . You should r ead books and articles to familiarize yourself with the subject but success requ ires practice (and often years of trial and error). As you would expect. H ey. Hey. I never met anyone who simply read books about guitars and magically developed the ability to play! OOBEs are like playi ng a musical instrument. Take at look at the tip of the fingernail on the little finger of your right hand. meditating.
OOBEs while walk ing or otherwise in movement are an exception. You are lying flat on your back. There is a saying in Japanese: "bachi ga ataru. In addition. what you will discuss. if your spouse or lover also projec ts.ons -.where you will go. Have a very clear idea about what you are goin g to do. Some Form Of Progressive Relaxation. Most people fail at OOBEs because they lack the discipline a nd patience to train correctly. when you will return. etc. F eel your body (the inside as well as the outside) and watch it as it slows down and goes to sleep (into trance).so plan ahead. a sleeping person might tend to make you sleep y as well -." Bad deeds come back multiplied and in th e astral. think of your training place as yo ur OOBE dojo. you might consider moving to another room for a few hours for OOBE training. Some swear by aligning the head towa rds magnetic North. always do this (an d I do!). Also. Clear Purpose -. Be very careful about what you ask for -.you might even see them -. To some extent. You could also think of it as your OOBE temple. unplug the telephone -. When you have a "special" place for OOBE training. I think it is just a mental crutch. Restless movements or noises can be very disturbing. quiet. Many peo ple visualize the various parts of their body switching off from toes to head. Merely repea ting things does nothing but stating meaningful words and phrases with 100% conv iction should produce some results. Some Form Of Invocation Of Protection. energy formation s.Definite Target. you are giving instructions to your Unconscious Mind. clut ter tends to make novices disoriented. switch off the a larm. Training Place. make sure the door is l ocked so that you won't have to worry about "phantom" intruders later. Simply entering the space wi th the objective of leaving your body will trigger your Unconscious Mind's OOBE autoexec file. Turn off the television and radio. Most skilled projectors protect their phy sical space and various bodies (physical and astral) by prayer. Act at all times in a noble manner and with a good intent. Plan a specific course -. You are about to step ou t of conventional time/space so you might as well start thinking in an unlimited way. uncluttered and to the extent possible. secure. OOBE training in the same bed/location might be ideal. Then desire to go to it with all your being. Half-hearted effo rts get no results. Don't worry about it. etc. It is a special.sleep is infectious. your Unconscious Mind will le arn that it is time to go "out" when you are there. One of my teachers warned me to ensure that I always.positive statements about what you will do (can already do). You will probably find that a systematic me thod of progressively relaxing the body produces far better results than just ly ing there. Some Form Of Deep Or Rhythmic Breathing. you are re sting comfortably in a stable position. Don't just think. "I am going to leave my body. It will also help you to avoid falling asleep involuntarily. Plan ahead so that the jerking motion of "nodding off" will not terminate your OOBE. The breaths are gradually lengthened so that the n umber of inhales and exhales per minute is reduced. You won't be able to think in the way to which you are accustomed. Reading without verba lizing (the words just stream in without being spoken or translated.. If it is uncomfortable." A Hard Tongue. This does not happen very often but if the light and sound become very strong and your gaze is set on your third eye. etc . The sound is roaring. after you return to your body. The Buzzing Sound. Just wait. itchy. Attempting to move at this point will likely terminate the experience and result in discomf ort. Relax . the energy could result in flashing li ghts. the light kicks in. etc. waves of pulsating colors. Depending on the form(s) your energy has taken. then suddenly it all stops. Relax. 2 3. you will have to transl ate the experience into words. For a split second you can't even think.this is a pretty rare and fanta stic show! You can leave your body later. it is just that there is no internal verbalization or dialogue. try to raise your pitch (energy frequenc y). Practicing "non-verbal awareness" during n ormal consciousness is an important part of OOBE training. Rather than trying to loo k around (with your eyes shut because you can't move) focus your attention on yo ur third eye (the spot between your eyebrows). In fact. could be more like the buzzing of insects. Your physical body will "go to sleep. try to raise the pitch an oct ave or two. like an u ltra. If the sound is annoying. Catalepsy Or Sleep Paralysis. it's normal. I tend to think that light is a higher form of energy. You might even h ear music. This will feel somewhat like remembering a dream. At such a time. Something wond erful is about to happen.. Mind Awake. But you will probably hear something -. Energy takes many forms." It will be heavy and you will not be able to move it.highspeed modem connection). The initial novelty of this experience should help you to focus on what's going on and minimize any stray thoughts. You are still in control. Although described less often. your mind is fully awake -. With practice the process becomes pleasant. Don't let your mind run off in a million directions. Your internal energy is largely generated by your breath so proper breathing is extremely important. remain calm and watch -. Simply relax mentally until you are pure awa reness. it feels incredibly c lear. There is no separation between t hought and action. you will likely find yourse lf in the next stage. You might get the distinct feeling that while your body is completel y asleep (paralyzed). you mi ght feel electric. One of my teachers described this by saying: "You can' t think 1.in fact. And it is an excellent sign of your progress. Your breathing will probably have become very rapid as well. you might find your tongue pressing against the roof of your mouth and becoming rigid. typing without verbalizing. By the time you've finished your routine of progressive relaxation combined with deep or rhythmic breathing. You are still inside your body but you feel like you a ti ny point of awareness in a huge expanse. The silence is deafening. performing dance . except with great effort. the Watcher of the dream and the Watcher of OOBEs is the same. your skin is elec tric. You will likely hear a sound that ma y be as gentle as leaves rustling. Do not initiate new lines of thought. Later. Sudden Stillness. Again. But your awareness is not passive. you become a witness to what is happening to yo u. Sometimes it might even feel like you are not breathing at all or that the air is coming in through your ski n. This phase is of critical importance. relax. hot. like insects are crawling all over your skin. I sometimes get the feeling of being sunburned on the "inside. I find that at a certain pitch and intensi ty of sound. the light is flashing.and it might be quite pronoun ced." To some extent. Some people panic the first few times they experience this paralysis. This is described in the Kundalini lite rature.. Your eyes might flicker (rapid eye movements). or might even be as loud as a roaring train or howling hurricane. The Light. soon you will learn to enjoy it. The "Itchy Skin" Feeling. A Switch-Over To Non-Verbal Awareness.rt of progressive relaxation. It's almost like being in a dark cavern . The physical sensations follow the pitch. Gradually let your thoughts settle..

You might feel air rushing over your bo dy. you've already lost your n ormal thinking mind and switched to the nonverbal. Go with the flow. always. You might hear a click. I am not using this term with reference to a particular belief syst em. which is the real you and which is active during OOBEs. Get ready. skin color.. race. someone sugges ted that the term "Monitor" was more appropriate. Leaving the body is really about learning to shift your attention from one pl ace (the physical body) to another (the astral body). There i s no "good" or "bad" direction. It's not y our skull breaking. you. this time farther. Some people (especially in near-death-experiences) find themselves m oving down a dark tunnel with a point of light at the end. Also try using the i mage and feeling of being pulled out. Leave the unnecessary "trapping" of your pers onality behind. think. you're out! Black Out. I don't know... You could call it "the part of you that can't be named but y ou know its there at all times and is incredibly wise and powerful and ageless.it is very active. I am using it in an experi ential sense. .like the boundaries are expanding.. Right now it might be outside of your physical body and you don't even know it! Can y ou shift your attention to it? The Tunnel. your hair flowing back.) does not pass from life to life. You might feel like your body is grow ing in all directions -. weight. gender. Much of what you consider to be "you" (height." Without formulating the que stion you will find that the answer is right there -. They are just variables. This mig ht be a good time to imagine floating like a cloud.. Some religions or groups might also use the term. The astral body does not m erely sleep within the body during your waking hours -. dream. I think that in truth that no term is sufficient. When I project. a switching sound. You might feel like you are simultaneously inside your body and outside of it. Go with it -...there is no gap. Pack lightly. Remember. sleep. education level. You're not out of your body yet.. the essence. It doesn 't matter.. Congratulations.. age. Be creative. The Watcher. Imagine yourself purified to the bare essence -. This may have been my own "H igher Self". Don't limit yourself to images of rising up. spin. climb . sideways. Inconsistent percep tions will either seem dreamlike or will be ignored or deleted. . You will find that "wo rdless awareness" is not the same as "not thinking. Good. Movement. Bring it back and extend it again. work." Your Self-Concept Is Limiting -. sink. Ex tend the feeling. you may be able to initiate it by visualization. You might hear the rush ing of wind.. I feel the presence of my own "Watcher" which is a part of "me" but not part of my ordinary thinking mind.Pack Light For Your Trip! Who you think you are will limit the perceptions which will be acceptable to you.." That's alright. Relax and go with it. You may feel it loca lized around your head. but you're almost there. feet or even near your stomach.Physical Triggers. Sometimes your awareness will bounce back and forth! This is usua lly a transition stage which will pass fairly quickly.. Maybe it's the sound of an astral form of static electricity as you pass through the physical barrier.don't fight it. Just be diligent about seizing y .. Direction is irrelevant. You are moving.
Seeing Your Physical Body. You are not limited by your physical cha racteristics. Are you a physical being which can project into the astral. OOBEs are the natural state. Whether you call it a temple of enli ghtenment or a prison. Sorry Bud but you're working at a preschool level right no w and your Watcher has a Ph. For some people (probably a very small group). it is a vehicle. Panic sets in and the immediate resul t is a quick and sometimes unpleasant return to the body. respectfull y ask your Unconscious Mind what's troubling it. are you going "out" or waking up? It is a journey or a return? Yo u can see that it all depends on your perspective. hearin g and sense of touch. You might not. Intellectually you might feel perfectly saf e but your "gut" makes you feel scared. Seize control by doing something tactile -. T he physical body is a vehicle --like a car. You're Home.. You have! You're home. like a car. really dead. There is ambie nt light even in an absolute vacuum. Your attachment to your physic . T here is no sense of dark once your astral eyes being to function. You might have to regain awareness by awakening in a dream . Some people. The Silver Cord. Are Your Feet Touching The Ground? Probably not! Do you even have feet? Hmmmm. raise your pitc h/vibration.touch something. Oh. Can you imagine how slow and limiting the physical world must be for an astral being ? They might naturally feel disinterested in it and even in some of the people w ho inhabit it..as if it is merely a convenient vehicle. Don't "blindly" interpret the vision (or lack thereof) to mean that you'r e in a dark. What I mean by this is your nonverbal Watcher has to get the knack of using the astral sight. Just give your astral eyes some time. You 'll probably not want to leave. everything is illuminated by its own light. Skilled astral projectors are usually also skilled dreamers. A lucid dream can be an entry point to OOBEs.our awareness at the earliest opportunity. scared almost to death. You might even feel indifferent to it -. go back and reassess your belief system. At the highest level you are pure light. months or even years of training. It doesn't really like diddling around in the nea r physical level and it has to relearn the ropes! Many novices report seeing a black or gray mist. But if you do you'll probably find that it seems very foreign and p ractically lifeless.. after weeks. It takes a while for your astral senses to switch on. Your body reacts to situations that it p erceives as dangerous. safe. another reason for the fear is that you think you are dead. Everything Shines! More correctly. Sheer Terror. Your Normal State. Also. evil realm. Cherish the feeling. Awakening In A Dream. Ri ght now you are physical (I assume) and later today you might have an OOBE. There's no rule that says you have to examine your ph ysical body. You might see it. If the fear persists.barely separated from it -. If you are uncomfortable where you are. with experience the fear disappears.. you will still be very close to y our physical body -. Trust me. You feel that you have returned to a familiar place. You're prob ably not used to using them except when completely unaware. that obviously was not true. Can you see the energy you set u p around your body for protection? If not. finall y achieve an OOBE only to find themselves frightened to the bone.and it will still exert a stron g influence on you. Identify any anomalies in the dr eam. inanimate. do it now. gripped by abs olute terror. Why the fright? Imagin e standing near the edge of a cliff. etc. When that happens. o r an astral being which descends into the flesh? Think about it for a moment. During your first OOBE. somewhere you' ve been many times before.D. I f you are reading this. You Can't See.

You might have "blacked out" (lost consciousness) when you first left your body. rapture. For some reason. As yo u gain more experience. you will probably not be speaking in th e usual sense. Some people go from Point A to Point B by traveling throug h space. Initially. Sometimes an OOBE seems very brief.no need to clutter up th e astralscape. Astral Motion." perhaps just the first time your were consciously " out. you w ill probably have occasion to feel it. bliss. but for the time being you are a novice. Try it. You attract and are attracted to like energy. vortexes. Telepathic Communication. up. mists. gravity cannot weigh you down. I know. Don't be too iteral about it. It might happen again when you're out but for a different reason.unless you let them.. Negative emotions or outbursts here can have serious repercussions. The answer is in there ! Be respectful enough to pay attention to the whispers. But by that time. inverted or inside-out -. there are many modes of travel. You are in a different time/ space . you are normally acting beyond the capability of words. This is not the fir st time you have been "out. You can see in all directions at the same time.. Joy. It is difficult to see 6 while physical. Joy. joy.what seems like an extremely long OOBE may only take seconds.al body is normally invisible (sort of like gravity) -. Limitations Are Mental.. I can't offer any personal guidance on this. so to speak. This is not like t he internet where "flaming" has relatively no consequence. Rise out of areas that make you fill ill at ease. light can be read. It takes a while to get used to this.. Others just jump straight to Point B. left. Time Travel. Novices tend to act like they are swimming or flying. The higher you go. Now you are moving in three.it gets. Some people begin to get confused between left and right even while physical! OOBE vision is often reversed.and intelligent -. being out-of-the-body is not so bad! Enhanced Understanding. If you don't l ike your surroundings ask yourself why you have been drawn to them. The opposite is also true -... The walls cannot hold you. Light Is Intelligent. Tunnels. Even if you don't see a cord. You create your own limitations." Your Watcher knows infinitely more than your ordinary consciousness. Actually. Sounds mystic aga in. indescribable freedom. Eight Corners -. Quite the op posite is true. insights will begin to stream in. Some also describe this as having an eye in the back o f the head. Secondary Black Out. t he more alive -. Hey. the light is alive.small pieces of the Whole. We are accustom ed to moving in only two directions. happiness beyond words. Imagine a giant hologram containing scans of every page of every book of the Library of Congress. Like Attracts Like. I think that light is very like that -. Directional Confusion. Oh my. Right.
