New FAA Tower Dedicated

New Control Tower Replaces Two at Oakland International Airport
Federal, regional and local officials recently dedicated Oakland International Airports new 236-foot tall airport traffic control tower. The new tower replaces two air traffic control towers that served Oakland International Airport for more than 40 years as a result of a $33.2 million American Recovery and Reinvestment (ARRA) grant that paid for constructing the tower and a 14,000 square foot base building. The grant was the FAAs largest single ARRA award. Present to dedicate the new tower and share remarks were Congresswoman Barbara Lee, David Suomi, FAA Deputy Regional Administrator, Mayor Jean Quan, Ces Butner, President of the Oakland Board of Port Commissioners, and Port of Oakland Aviation Director Deborah Ale Flint. The new tower, located at 101 Air Cargo Way on OAKs North Field, is recognized for its green features and was awarded a coveted LEED Gold environmental rating. Solar panels on the roof of the base building and parking structure provide almost enough power to meet the facilitys daytime needs on a sunny day. An underground, geothermal system will provide heating and air conditioning, and an underground water storage system will capture rain runoff to irrigate landscaping during the dry, summer season. All landscaping consists of drought-tolerant plants. Already a landmark on Oaklands skyline, the state-of-the-art tower supports air traffic control operations at the airport and contributes to the safe and efficient operation of the National Airspace System. The modernized, taller tower gives controllers dramatically better airfield views, which helps enhance safety. A 158foot-tall tower on the southern portion of the airfield was built in 1962 as a part of a terminal expansion project. In 1972, construction of a large hangar blocked some views from the south tower, requiring the Port of Oakland to build a second tower to handle traffic on the north runways. Oakland tower controllers handled more than 210,000 takeoffs and landings in 2012. The total cost of the new tower, including site preparation, electronics, air traffic control equipment, utilities, and installation of equipment was $51 million. Tower construction was completed ahead of schedule and about $2 million under budget. Congresswoman Lee spoke of the difficulty in securing the federal grant in light of the many other deserving proposed projects. President Ces Butner spoke on behalf of the Port Commission in noting the FAA tower project is one more recent building and construction milestone for which Oakland can be proud, also citing the recent groundbreaking of the Oakland Army Base project, FedExs recent expansion at Oakland International Airport, and Goodman Birtchers near-complete spec facility at Swan and Pardee. The new tower at Oakland International Airports North Field is one of the tallest and most advanced in the country.

First Ever Nonstops to Stockholm and Oslo in 2014

Norwegian Air Shuttle announced new nonstop service to Oakland International Airport from its hubs in Stockholm, Sweden and Oslo, Norway. The new flights begin in May 2014 using state-of-the art Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft seating 291 passengers. The flights are the first-ever nonstop services offered from the two Scandinavian capitals to the Bay Area. Flights to Stockholm Norwegian will operate two weekly flights between Stockholm and Oakland on Tuesdays and Saturdays. The introductory fare is $236 one way. Flights to Oslo Norwegian will operate three weekly flights between Oslo and Oakland Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The introductory fare is $236 one way. "Long-haul flying has for way too long been characterized by expensive fares and limited flexibility. The great reception Norwegian has received after launching to New York and Fort Lauderdale shows that there is a need for competitive fares from Scandinavia to the U.S. Our entry into long-haul, intercontinental markets continues and we are pleased to launch the San Francisco Bay Area service at Oakland International Airport." said Norwegian CEO Bjrn Kjos. "Norwegian has not only been well received by Scandinavian passengers travelling to the U.S, but also Americans going to Scandinavia and beyond," Kjos added.

Greenway Groundbreaking
Coliseum Area Segment Begun
A groundbreaking event was recently held near Coliseum BART to launch construction of a half-mile segment of the planned 12-mile East Bay Greenway project. Depicted in gold on the map (right), the Coliseum segment will be a multiuse Class 1 Bike Lane facility paralleling San Leandro Street from 75th Avenue to 85th Avenue. Construction is estimated to be complete in spring 2014. Paid for by a combination of $1.7 million in federal Tiger II funds and an East Bay Regional Park District WW bond match, Caltrans issued an Authorization to Proceed with construction in September of 2012. The Alameda County Transportation Commission awarded construction of the project in July 2013. Alameda CTC is working with local and regional partners to secure additional funding to finance construction of the full 12-mile project. BART Director Robert Raburn and East Bay Regional Park President John Sutter (above right) were on hand for the groundbreaking to deliver remarks about the East Bay Greenway that promises to transform the area beneath BART tracks into pedestrian- and bike-friendly landscaped pathways that will be enjoyable to both navigate and view, per the before and after depictions bottom right.

SPCA Grand Opening

New Veterinary Clinic to Keep Pace with Service to Patients
A ribbon-cutting ceremony and facility tours marked the grand opening of the East Bay SPCAs Theodore B. Travers Family Veterinary Clinic at 8323 Baldwin Street. The new facility continues to offer high quality, affordable pet exams and health care for publicly owned dogs and cats, performs surgeries, and offers a convenient drop-in vaccine and microchip clinic. The new clinic replaces the dated clinic the East Bay SPCA operated since 1956. The new 5,000 square foot stand-alone Veterinary Clinic features six examination rooms, a state-of-the art surgical suite and equipment, a lobby with separate waiting areas for dogs and cats, separate recovery and holding areas for sick and injured animals, and a pharmacy, food and supplies storage areas. "For the past five years, we have seen a steady increase in the number of animals coming through our clinic doors, said East Bay SPCA President & CEO Allison Lindquist. Our new Veterinary Clinic will be able to significantly increase not only the number of patients served, but the number of life-saving procedures we can perform." The $3 million Veterinary Clinic is part of a $9 million renovation the East Bay SPCA is undertaking to double the shelters animal holding space and provide two additional classrooms for education programs, dog training classes, and community meeting space.
