INTRODUCTION
University education was established in New Zealand in 1870. There are eight government-funded universities, all of them internationally respected for their academic and research performance.
In addition to a centrally co-ordinated system of quality assurance audits at both institution and programme level, each university undertakes internal quality checks. All new programmes are accredited through a national university qualifications committee. All New Zealand universities offer a broad range of subjects in the arts (humanities and social sciences), business and science. Each also has its own specialist subjects such as medicine, engineering, law, veterinary science, agriculture and environmental studies.

Universities New Zealand – Te Pōkai Tara is the representative body for New Zealand’s eight universities. Māori culture, including Māori language, is a unique feature of New Zealand, and Māori is an official language of the country. All universities have a Māori translation of their name to show that they are public institutions. Te Pōkai Tara represents a flock of Caspian terns. They signify a journey upwards and a connection with the source of knowledge and a sense of the first rays of light at dawn.
