Derive the expression for deformation of a body due to self weight. A compound bar ABC 1.5 m long is made up of two parts of aluminium and steel and area of cross section of aluminium bar is twice that of steel bar. The bar is subjected to an axial tension load of 250 kN. Find the lengths of two parts of compound bar. The Esteel = 200 GPa and EAl = 70 GPa. Define shear force and bending moment. An overhang beam ABC is loaded as shown in figure: 1. Draw shear force and bending moment diagram and found the point of contra flexure.

A rectangular beam is to be cut from a circular log of wood of diameter D. Find the ratio of dimensions for the strength section in bending. Drive an expression for the shear stress at any point in the cross section of a beam. A solid shaft and hollow circular shaft whose inside diameter is of the outside diameter are of equal lengths

and are required to transport a given torque. Compare the weights of these two shafts, if maximum shear stress developed in the both shafts equal. What are helical springs? Differentiate between a closely coiled helical spring and an open cool helical spring. A horizontal steel girder having uniform cross section is 12 m long and is supported at it ends. Derive a formula for the hoop stress in a then spherical shell subjected to internal pressure. A cylindrial vessel 2 m long and 500 mm in diameter with 10 mm thick plates is subjected to an internal pressure of 3 MPa. Calculate the change in volume of vessel. Take E = 200 GPa, Poissons ratio = 0.3. What is the difference between thin cylindrical and thick cylinderical wall? 2 A cast iron pipe of 400 mm internal diameter and 100 mm thickness carries water under a pressure of 8 N/mm . Deterime the maximum and minimum intensities of hoop stress across the section. Also sketch the pressure distribution and hoop stress distribution across the section.

Write the assumptions made in the theory of simple bending. Three beams have same length, the same allowable stress and the same bending moment. The cross sections of the beams are square, rectangle with depth twice the width and circle. Find the ratios of the weights of circular and the rectangular beams with respective to the square beam. Show that for rectangular section, the distribution of shearing stress is parabolic. A shaft is transmitting 100 KW at 180 rpm; if the allowable shear stress in the shaft material is 60 MPa, determine the suitable diameter for the shaft. The shaft is not to twist more than in a length of 3 m. Take N = 80 GPa. Derive an expression for deflection of closely coiled helical spring subjected to an axial load. A simply supported beam of span 2.5 m carries a gradually varying load from zero to 10 KN/m. What is maximum 12 2 deflection of beam? Take EI for the beam section as 1.2 10 N mm . Derive a relation for the changes of diameter and depth of a thin cylondrical shell, when subjected to internal pressure. A steam boiler of 1.25 m in diameter is subjected to an internal pressure of 1.6 MPa. If the steam boiler is made up of 20 mm thick plates, calculate the circumferential and longitudinal stress. Take efficiency of circumferential and longitudinal joints as 75% and 60% respectivily. A compound cylinder is made of shrinking a tube of 160 mm internal diameter and 20 mm thick over another tube of 2 160 mm external diameter and 20 mm thick. The radial pressure at the common surface, after shrinking is 8 N/mm . Find the final stress setup across the section, when the compound cylinder is subjected to an internal fluid pressure 2 of 60 N/mm .

Derive the expression for the strain energy stored in a body when the load is suddenly applied. Derive the expression for relation between bulk modulus and youngs modulus. Define shear force and bending moment. A simply supported beam 5 m long is loaded with a udl of 10 KN/m over a length of 2 m as shown in figure 1. Draw the shear force and bending moment indicating the value of maximum bending moment.

Derive the expression for shearing stress over a circular section and draw the shear distribution diagram. Prove that in case of torsion of circular shaft. A closely coiled helical spring is made of 6 mm wire. The maximum shear stress and deflection under 200 N load is not to exceed 80 MPa and 11 mm respectively. Determine the number of coils and mean diameter. A horizontal beam AB is freely supported at A and B, 8 m apart and carrying a uniformly distributed load of 15 KN/m run. A clock wise moment of 150 kNm is applied to the beam at point C, 3 m from left hand support A. Calculate the slope of beam at C, if EI = 40 Show that in case of thin cylindrical shell subjected to an internal fluid pressure, the tendency to burst length wise is twice as great as in a transverse section. A boiler shell of 2 m diamter is made up of mild steel plates of 20 mm thick. The efficincy of the longitudinal and circumferentiral joint is 70% and 60% restsectively. Determine the circumferential stress in the plate and longitudinal stress through the rivets. What do you understand by Lame theory? 2 A cast iron pipe 200 mm internal diameter and 50 mm thick carries a water under pressure of 5 N/mm . Find the maximum and minimum intensities of circumferential stress across the section. Also sketch the radial pressure and circumferential distribution across the section.

A hollow steel tube is having external diameter and internal diameter 100 mm and 75 mm respectively. The tube carries a concentrated load of W at a distance of 2 m from one of the supports. What is the value of W if the maximum bending stress is not to exceed 100 MPa? A T-section beam with 100 mm 15 mm flange and 150 15 mm web is subjected to a shear stress of 10 KN at a section. Draw the variation of shear stress across the depth of beam and obtain the maximum shear stress at the section. A solid shaft of 80 mm diameter is to be replaced by a hollow shaft of external diameter 100 mm. Determine the internal diameter of the hollow shaft if the same power is to be transmitted by both the shafts at the same angular velocity and shear stress. Derive the expression for deflection of closely coiled helical spring subjected to an axial load. A beam AB of length is loaded as shown in figure 3. Find the initial compressive stress in the pipe section. Also find the stresses setup in the pipe and steel wire, when water under pressure of 4 MPa is admitted into the pipe. Take E for cast iron and steel as 100 GPa and 200 GPa. Poissons ratio = 0.3. Write the assumptions for solving the problems on thick cylindrical shell. A thick metalic cylindrical sheel of 150 mm internal diameter is required to withstand an internal pressure of 8 2 2 N/mm . Find the neassary thickness of shell, if the permissible tensile stress in the section is 20 N/mm .
