ok, i'm back, after a too long
absence. first off, let me apologize to
any and all who have ordered stuff
from me and got it late, or have yet to
get it- you haven't been forgotten, i'm
just behind (still) but there is light at
the end of the tunnel. the address
below is the safest one to write to, since
i am prone to moving unexpectedly
(and that seems to be half of my
problems). please do not write to the
Bloomington address any longer, it just
takes me way too long to receive my
mail from there, and the friendly post
office people only forwarded my mail
for about two weeks. sorry for the
delays, but there's not a whole lot i
do about some of them. on to local
semi-local news:
well, SPLIT LIP broke up, and i
thought it was for good, but after a
three month absence, they're back.
could be good, could be bad, i guess it
depends on your perspective, but now
that they're playing a bar, and with
PRONG i'm not too hip on the whole
situation. their CD has been out on
DOGHOUSE for a while now, but you
probably knew that. check out the
interview. TANNER BOYLE is playing
shows once again, and should be having
a 7" out real soon (if not already) on
RED DA WG RECORDS. they play more
of a poppy/DC/something type music
that's not really my style, but their fun
to see, and nice guys regardless.
PHALANX is a band that sounds sort of
like FARSIDE, if you have to categorize.
since last issue i quit JACKHAMMER,
they picked up another bass player &
recorded a 7" for INITIAL RECORDS,
which has also been out for quite a
they then kicked out their
singer, and then their new bass player,
changed the name to THREE ALARM
JOB, & are supposedly doing a 7" for
DOGHOUSE. they aren't really my cup
of tea musically, and one of them told
me that they just want to get "big", so
enough about them, whatever. ONCE
AGAIN their final show
(which was pretty
also have a 7" out soon,
know the label. GADJE is a new band
with lots of potential, and includes one
of the members of ONCE AGAIN as well.
another new band with a member (or
two?) of ONCE AGAIN is CIRCLE OF
NATIONS. they haven't played yet, so
we'll have to see how it turns out. my
new band BIRTHRIGHT has also started
playing shows, and should be playing
as the weeks progress, we
recorded a few songs on four track just
for the fun of it, send a tape if you want
one, and i'll copy it for you- look for a
real studio release out soon as well, on
CATALYST records i'd expect. i don't
really have any other releases scheduled
right now, but i' m still trying to find
interested bands for a comp., so sxe
bands send recordings if you've got
them, and if you' re interested.
outside of Indy- WAR CRY is a
sxe/animal rights oriented band from
Bloomington, and are expecting a 7"
out soon on MILITANT RECORDS. they
recently played some shows out east as
well. MILITANT is also scheduled to
release the ABNEGATION 7", and as a
rule does sxe vegan ba11ds. also in s.
Indiana, REVEAL #3 should be out as of
ENDPOINT is S1ill. going with
new album on DOGHOUSE,
and an upcoming summer tour. they
have a new drummer, and have also
added pat from SCAB on bass. SCAB
played here not too long ago,
honestly didn't seem to with it. they
have a new drummer too. SCAB was
supposed to have a 7" out on NOBLE
RECORDINGS, but i haven't heard
anything about it for quite a while.
FALLING FORWARD still rules, they have
a 7" on NOBLE, and have a CD on
INITIAL. they'll also be touring with
ENDPOINT. Chicago is making a
comeback with a bunch of zines
(CROSSCHECK, PERSIST,
STORMTROOPER, FRONTLINE,
POSITRON,
EVERLAST plays
heavy hardcore, and they have a demo
out, as well as a 7" coming out on
CHAPTERHOUSE. i also know of ONE
NATION UNDER, CORNERSTONE,
AMMEND, but i have yet to hear
recordings of these bands.
Columbus, Ohio- hello, is any one
there? i have seen one 'zine from there
recently, RESTRAINT, and that's it. the
only Dayton bands that i know of is
DROWNING IN A FLAME, and NEED,
but i'm not sure of their current status'.
speaking of Dayton, the MORE THAN
MUSIC FEST '94 seems to be scheduled
for June 16 & 17, but it is no longer the
" More Than Music" fest, but now
"Music For Music's Sake", how swell.
three shows in two days, not a whole lot
of hardcore bands are playing, so keep
your eyes open. i might show up, well,
maybe not.
i am also booking shows in indianapolis
again, so get in touch,

carmel, in
we are all alone, separate entities cursed with the
constant reminder of our loneliness. to find some
semblance of closeness we do whatever we can,
even though it may only bring us more pain in the
end. we'll throw our bodies together, thinking that
by bridging our skin that we can bridge the gap of
misunderstanding that divides our souls. and we
find pai:n, and more pain, never learning. every
time thinking that this time it will work. we are
being used, by ourselves, for ourselves, but nothing
is ever gained. we are playing a tragic game, but as
long as we think of intimacy as a physical act, we
will never win. sex is not a game, and it will not
bring two people closer than their bodies can get.
true intimacy doesn't work that way, and it remains
after the moments of gratification are long gone.
we have been taught, and we have learned so well.
for our own sakes we must break the cycle of use,
closeness will not come that way, no matter how
hard we wish it would. it is for a few moments
only, and then the reality returns again, and once
again we are as islands. in the end, we are betrayed.
fuck your pride. fuck this nation, fuck your precious flag. shove down
your own fucking throat. choke on it like you force so to on It ever:Y

the elite), in the name of idiocy. i do not pledge allegiance.

THING
this is it. this is everything i am. this is a part of me, i have put
myself into thi s work, Lbese words flow straight from my veins. my
anger, my sadness, my love, my passion, my rage, my hopes; they are
all here, even though you mi ght not see all of them at first glance.
my love for this world. my anger at the continuos injustices i witness
daily. my passion for life- all went into this. all of these things are
me, and i will not deny any one of them. what you hold now is a
product of my anger, rage and hate, but i would feel none of these
things if not for my love and respect, if not for the passion for life, all
life, that fuels me. ·
more than a few people commented on my last issue, saying that i
sounded too angry or hatefuL i am hateful, i am angry, i can not
deny this part of me, or i am incomplete. recognize what is behind
the anger, there lies the true motivation.

GUYS JUST
RECORDED FOR THE   ~
HOW DO YOU THINK IT
TURNED OUT/ HOW DID
YOU LIKE IT'?
CURTIS: we recorded thirty
hours and mixed another
twenty hours, fifty hours
total, i think it came out
really good.
HOW WOULD YOU
DESCRIBE THE SOUND ON
IT'?
more powerful, but in
a different way- relying on
striking some sort of a chord
in somebody. not like "in your
face", but in the mixing of the
melody of the music with the
melody of the vocals, with
the lyrical content. the
pattern of the music and the
pattern of the vocals make it
a powerful recording.
PLI
WHAT WOULD BE YOUR
MUSICAL INFLUENCES ON
THE LP'?
D: lyrically it is based on the
down trodden "please, please,
let me get what i want type
of thing, people that deserve
to be happy, but for some
reason are not. so my
influences are people i know
who aren't happy who i would
like to be happy. that kinda
goes along with the title "For
Love of the Wounded".
C: we are planning to tour
and go everywhere, but we
won't be able to do as much
as we'd like due
circumstances.
D: maybe with MAJORITY OF
ONE.
D: it would be good for us to
have products out there to
sell.
50 HOW DO YOU LIKE
BEING ON DOGHOUSE'?
D: it's only gotten better and
better really ...
C: it could only get better
than it was at the beginning,
we didn't get shit.
you make me sick. sing along, read
the words- have you ever thought it,
that they might be about you? you
don't even see it. i don't even know
what i can say or do. tell me how
good the words are again, but i
wonder when you will live them.
wake up, they are about you, you are
not innocent. read them again, and
again, and again, and again ...
read them until you understand. burn
them into your mind until they
become a part of you.
I i ar.
· will never be · you, not again.

IS SPLIT LIP GOING TO BE
AROUND AFTER THE TOUR,
EVEN THOUGH CURTIS
WILL BE LEAVING? DO
YOU HAVE ANY PLANS ON
THAT?
we really have two
choices, we can get a new
bass player and keep the
name, and just keep doing
what we are; or we can get a -
new bass player and change
the name, or we can just quit
all together. we won't quit,
i'm sure, but to get a new
bass player ... Dirk said if we
were going to change the
name to do it now, for his
benefit, for this album, but
we decided not to do that. if
we change the name it's
going to be like starting over.
so we'll probably keep the ·
name and get some one new.
it won't be the same and we'll
probably get
decline ...
YOU'LL KEEP THE
NAME, HAVE YOU EVER
THOUGHT ABOU
CHANGING IT ANYWAY?
D: oh yeah, but it's gotten
to the point that it would be
typical, because everyone
expects us to. It would be like
"oh, i always thought they
should have changed the
name" . it seems
predictable now.
C: there's definitely worse
names out there.
D: and when people hear this
album they'll definitely know
we're not big tough guys that
want to beat people up.

DO YOU THINK YOU HAVE
A RESPONSIBILITY TO SAY
THINGS BETWEEN SONGS,
TO EDUCATE PEOPLE? IS
THERE A RESPONSIBILITY,
DO YOU USE THE POWER
YOU HAVE?
definitely, especially in
Indianapolis. i have a big
responsibility when 800 kids
show up at a show and most
of them aren't like you and i,
they're not involved in the
type of things we are. i think i
have a huge responsibility to
portray the lifestyle we live to .
people who don't know it. to
show that we're not just
some band to come and

about it too much. i'm not

D: i don't know if i see it as

I DON'T THINK I SEE IT

D: i would fight to keep it a

about making a career out of
it, and making money, but
that's not what i want to do.
i'm scared what's going to
happen when he leaves, but
we'll see.
GROWING, WHAT ARE
YOUR FEELINGS ON THAT?

is it really so hard to believe? it
exists, in the world around us, and as much
as we'd like t o ignore the fact, it exists in
hard core too. we can't escape it, It Is t here,

for us, and questioning it means questioning
ourselves. these women are telling us how
they feel, and what they have experienced in
this "scene", and for that they get ridiculed
shot down and dismissed. its so fucking
easy, all we have to do is to give it a chance

says, "But he gagged me and hung
me and I couldn't talk so I did not have a
right of speech that I could exercise", she
will be told to solve her problem in some way
that will not impinge on or diminish his
"right" to express himself through the use of
her body. If she recognizes that his so-
called right is an exercise of power at the
expense of her humanity, and if she wants
rights of speech that are real in the world,
such that he cannot gag her and hang her and
photograph her and publish her, she will be
accused of wanting to take his rights from
him. In fact, she wants to take his power
oyer her from him. He has power disguised
as rights. protected by law that fosters
inequality. The mathematics are simple: his
diminished power will lead to an increase in
The power of the pornographer is
the power of men. The exploitation of the
woman gagged. hung. photographed and
published is the sexualized inferiority and
human worthlessness of women. If men
cannot gag. hang. photograph. and publish
women. men will have less power and women
will have more rights.
Because the establishment of equality
means taking power from those who have it.
power protected by law. those who have
wrongful power hate equality and resist it.
They defend the status quo through bigotry
and violence or sophistication and intellect. .
They say that rights will be lost if society
changes. They mean that power will be lost,
by them. This is true.
The Constitution, including the Bill
Rights , has served to defend wrongful
power and to protect inequality and
exploitation. This is primarily because
lacks and women were not recognized as fully
human and their inequality was built into
the basic structure of constitutional law. . .
Without equality as a fundamental value,
"rights" is a euphemism for "power", and
legally protected dominance will continue to
preclude any real equality.

DO YOU SEE IT
YOURSELF AT ALL'?
D: i do see it in myself, but i
have a huge desire for
growth, whether my actions
portray it or not, and i don't
think they do. but i'm
definitely going to change
that. in a lot of people we
hang out with, i see no

fine, but that's also not the

do we realize it? the
enormity of the struggle that we have
immersed ourselves in? by living this life,
by choosing not to accept this system of
destruction and all that it teaches, we stand
against all that is. one person. just one
person adopting a vegan diet does so much
good, saves thousands of lives, but we
cannot loose sight of the fact that we are
completely surrounded. there are millions
to our thousands, and no matter how we
struggle, we will see nothing but small steps
in the right direction. we will never see the
world we wish we could live in, where all
life is held sacred, regardless of the form it
takes. no matter how hard we try, we will
never see a world without the torture and
suffering of the innocent. it is merely a
dream harbored within our minds. but if
the dream is ever to become reality, it is up
to us to never give up, to continue on, no
matter how hopeless it may seem. we can
never do "enough", there is no such thing as
enough. to say that we have done enough is
to say that we can place a limit on our own
growth, or that a certain amount of suffering
is acceptable. it is to give in to our own
uncertainty, to our the apathy we have
fought £or so long. compassion knows no
boundaries. this goes beyond us, it has to,
or · t is completely worthless. as we have
built on what has come before those who
come after will build on what we now
accomplish, and in this way the dream that
we will never know can be realized. the
world we cannot hope to see will come to
pass, in someone's lifetime, if not our own.
we can never do enough.

let me preface the rest of

to break up after their tour,

three months later they got
back together and started
writing music again as a

bands, and are

as possibly on the side stage
at Lollapalooza. that brings
it up to date. so much for
caring about hardcore.
SPLIT LIP now
contradicts about
everything that they stated
in this interview. even
1 though Dave said that they
were a hardcore, and a
straight edge band, they
now are going to play bars,
with bar bands. he said that
they were a sxe band, but
about a week after i did this
interview, i read another
one where Dave said they
didn't want to label the
band as sxe. why the
different stories? i must say
that i was surprised when
he said that SPLIT LIP was a
zs a congruency, and the
choice was all theirs. i look
at it this way, be into
hardcore, or don't. either
way, fine, just stop
pretending, and stop trying
to play both sides. z
remember people in the
band who would have felt
the same way i do now,
people i believed when they
talked about sincerity, and i
can only wonder where
they are now, and i can only
hope that they prove me
wrong. as Curtis said "i just
think it comes with time,
we'll find out who's true to
what". i guess we found

happiness, it should be so easy. it should be attainable. people always talk about being
happy, about being satisfied, fulfilled. but how can i? how can i be satisfied with the world we
live in? how can i put aside and forget the suffering and misery of others, in order to concentrate
on my own "happiness"? i can' t. and i can' t feign a sense of satisfaction with my life as long as
the madness of this world continues. so i have resigned myself to being unhappy, to living without
much hope for the future, while continually crucifying myself with this self-same hope. i just can' t
fake an eternal good mood at the expense of the awareness that i have attained. because even
though this awareness brings me pain, and it tortures my soul, it is also my only salvation. so
forgive me if i don't force a smile, or if my attitude is tainted with bitterness, sarcasm, and
contempt. it is not that i wish to be this way, only that my conscience leaves me little choice. and
so i remain within a dark cloud of reality, my eyes brimming with tears at the witnessed atrocities.
helpless? hopeless? only time will tell, but for now my choice exacts its price. so forgive me. !I

The rumors about FlAGMAN not being straight edge are basi-
cally true. The only straight edge person remaining in FlAGMAN is
AI, their drummer. All of this insincerity is sod, and only makes m£
feel down. It seems that almost half my friends recently sold oul
their lives to alcohol or whatever controls them now. Hopefully
they'll realize what they're doing to themselves and turn things
around. None the less, they're gone now, and straight edge is no
longer a role in their lives. I'm left feeling stronger about my con-
victions towards being straight edge, and I know that I'll never
change, wether I'm the lost one or not. When one "stops" being
straight edge it only means that they were insincere and weak.
The people around here that hove left straight edge ore following
each other like sheep. They're doing what seems cool, and their
lives will change for the worse.

I'm sure that most kids have a clue as to what's going on around
them but don't really know what to do about the problems sur-
rounding us. I honestly don't think about what or how sincere kids
are about outside issues. I'm sure a lot of kids will pretend to care
about something that seems cool to care about. The whole PC scene
seems to be about 5% sincere, and 95% a trend. Most PC kids know
they're not sincere about what they claim to care about, but play
along to seem cool. As for the high drop out in straight edge, I
believe it's because they don't sincerely core about being straight

._ Hard core to me is more than music, it is a life-style, it is a differ-

fake, it has no integrity or real meaning. I like hardcore because
it's something to grab on to, and most of the time it's real. I've said

First of all, I see no similarity between being prejudiced and not
being vegan. I understand your point, but I don't think is on
equal similarity to being vegan. I still am not vegan, and sllll feel I
am doing some good by being vegetarian. I'm not perfect, or pure,
but 1 try to live my life the best I see fit. I do know being vegan
healthier, and by me drinking milk and consuming dairy products IS
cruelty to animals, but I haven't changed yet. Coli me o cop out or
ignorant, it won't make me stop. The only time I' II stop is when I'm
ready. I just don't feel like I'm prepared to be vegan now, maybe
in the future I'll convert. I think veganism is a big trend in straight
edge now, not necessarily a bad trend, but almost 90% these
vegan kids today won't be tomorrow. I'd rather toke my and
· ease into veganism rather than rush it, and end up a hypocnte.
The only reason vegetarianism is related to straight edge is be-
cause YOUTH OF TODAY and a lot of other bonds brought it into
their topic of songs. I think it was a good thing that they did that,
otherwise I'd probably still be eating meat, but I don't feel veg-
etarianism is o necessary part of being straight edge. It's o per-
sonal choice, you either care about animals, or you don't. You can't
force o person to core, only open their minds to whdt's going on.
I think that you have to care about yourself before you're veg-
etarian. If you care about yourself, then you can look at all of the
poison that os pumped into your body by what you eat, drink or
smoke. Once you decide to block out all of this poison, then you
can begin to care animals and make a change for yourself and the
animals. If you're vegetarian, and don't core about yourself, how
much change can you really bring? You can't drink, smoke or do
drugs and sincerely care about yourself. You start with something
like being straight edge, and keep going forward.
About a week after I received this interview, I was forced to
change my answer to this question. When I got this interview I
automatically said that you're hearing rumors, but now it's a dif-
ferent story. Our bassist is no longer straight edge. He got weak,
broke down, and is no longer in MOUTHPIECE. We also have had
problems with our drummer, and he will be replaced also. Straight
edge means too much to the remaining members of MOUTHPIECE
to let insincere members ruin everything. We will not break up, but
we will move forward with new members and remain a straight
edge bond.

I write songs about things I encounter in life, and motivate me
to write about. There's a song on the record about sex in America
today, and how so many people make sex out to be such a careless
subject. People look at each other as pieces of meat, and treat
them as such. Its about the kind of people who go out to parties to
"fuck" girls, and get as many as possible. It's not only demoraliz-
ing, but also very dangerous. That song is called "Strip The Threads".
I wrote another song about depression, and how it can ruin lives
and literally kill you. It's about being strong and coming out of
your depression. That song's called "Gauge"." What Remains" is a
song about being put down and dragged through the mud, but hav-
ing enough strength to stand up and come back only stronger. The
title track for the record is called 'What Was Said", and that's my
view of this whole "Hardline" movement, and how nothing good will
come out of violence and threats. Education is the only answer.
Those are just a few of the topics on the new record, you'll more
than likely be able to figure the rest out when you get the record.
I think hardcore bands have started to use their imagination,
and really haven't changed a thing. They think they can end all of
this world's problems through a couple of songs. I try to write
songs on a personal level, thins that people deal with in everyday
life. It's great that bonds are addressing these topics, but I just
don't think thot they're hitting the ball into the right field. I don't
feel that hardcore has become stagnant, at least to me it's not. I
like what a good majority of bands are talking about, and I can
relate.

._ Hard core to me is more than music, it is a life-style, it is a differ-
.·-':?·, ent way of thinking. Mainstream music seems to be so plastic and
fake, it has no integrity or real meaning. I like hardcore because
it's something to grab on to, and most of the time it's real. I've said
-:: _(; it before, but it's such a tight scene, and that's one of my favorite
· ·: aspects of hardcore. If I was at a store and saw a kid with a hardcore
.-_: :'_: t-shirt on, more than likely I'd talk to him or her. If it was any other

You can't

As for the high drop out in straight edge, I
believe it's because they don't sincerely core about being straight
edge. Once their friends change, they change. Straight is not : :

happiness, it should be so easy. it should be attainable. people always talk about being
happy, about being satisfied, fulfilled. but how can i? how can i be satisfied with the world we
live in? how can i put aside and forget the suffering and misery of others, in order to concentrate
on my own "happiness"? i can' t. and i can' t feign a sense of satisfaction with my life as long as
the madness of this world continues. so i have resigned myself to being unhappy, to living without
much hope for the future, while continually crucifying myself with this self-same hope. i just can' t
fake an eternal good mood at the expense of the awareness that i have attained. because even
though this awareness brings me pain, and it tortures my soul, it is also my only salvation. so
forgive me if i don't force a smile, or if my attitude is tainted with bitterness, sarcasm, and
contempt. it is not that i wish to be this way, only that my conscience leaves me little choice. and
so i remain within a dark cloud of reality, my eyes brimming with tears at the witnessed atrocities.
helpless? hopeless? only time will tell, but for now my choice exacts its price. so forgive me. !I

something like the 7" a year
and a half later. all of those
things on the 7" came from
what we thought we were
supposed to be as that kind
of band. i think that's short
changing us and whoever
wants to listen to us. there
is a part of me that wants a
lot of people to hear our
music, and a part of me that
doesn't. i want to be
respected by people, if
nothing else, and i don't
think we're crossing over in
C: every time we write a song
there is gradual change. i'm
still the same person as i
have always been. there are
some bands who are straight
forward and direct, with four
chords, and screaming
whatever change they want
to see, and that's hardcore,
but where do you say you're
not hardcore'? i don't want
to be considered a "sell out".
i remember saying bands had
"sold out" ...
D: the thing is, the last song
. on the LP "Box" [i it actually -",_
got left off of the CD by :

mistake- cat.] may not come
off as powerful on recording,
but the music live is
completely a hardcore song.
C: that's what i'm saying,
but from the point of view of
those who liked the 7", they
might be disappointed in the
LP, and might say that we're
"selling out".
D: why would someone be
disappointed in the LP,
because there's not an old .
school · straight edge
drumbeat'?
C: well, there's people who
think like that, and i think
that's just as bad as people
who come to shows in their
flannel and Dr. Martens.
I DON'T KNOW, I MEAN I
LIKE A LOT OF THOSE
BUT ON THE
ALBUM I DON'T LIKE SOME
OF THEM AT ALL.
you're never going to
capture the power and
emotion of playing live.
D: i love the LP. i listen to it
all of the time, i never did that
with the 7". there are things
on the 7" that i think are
really ridiculous. i was trying
to write to a pattern, and
that's completely obvious to
me in certain songs. you
can't please everyone, and
you not liking the songs, i
knew people like you would
have that reaction. i think
it's just a difference of
DO YOU THINK THE OTHER
D: Adam would, there s
question.
C: but Adam is still the type
of person who gets pissed off
about the same things that
piss us off. he's still got a lot'
of anger like the rest of us do.
D: people should respect us,
and i'm saying it in this 'zine
for everyone to read, for
making music that we stand
behind and put ourselves into.
we're not turning our backs
on any scene or on anyone,
and if people appreciate us
for our music then they'll
realize that.
IT'S LIKE NOW THAT
ABOUT EVERY ONE WE
KNOW IS VEGETARIAN,
AND I THINK THAT'S
GREAT, BUT NO ONE EVEN
THINKS ABOUT TRYING
VEGANISM. EVERYONE
JUST SAYS "OH, I COULD
NEVER BE VEGAN", BUT
THAT'S THE SAME THING
THEY USED TO SAY
ABOUT BEING
VEGETARIAN.
PEOPLE IN THE BAND C: with our friends, there are

do we realize it? the
enormity of the struggle that we have
immersed ourselves in? by living this life,
by choosing not to accept this system of
destruction and all that it teaches, we stand
against all that is. one person. just one
person adopting a vegan diet does so much
good, saves thousands of lives, but we
cannot loose sight of the fact that we are
completely surrounded. there are millions
to our thousands, and no matter how we
struggle, we will see nothing but small steps
in the right direction. we will never see the
world we wish we could live in, where all
life is held sacred, regardless of the form it
takes. no matter how hard we try, we will
never see a world without the torture and
suffering of the innocent. it is merely a
dream harbored within our minds. but if
the dream is ever to become reality, it is up
to us to never give up, to continue on, no
matter how hopeless it may seem. we can
never do "enough", there is no such thing as
enough. to say that we have done enough is
to say that we can place a limit on our own
growth, or that a certain amount of suffering
is acceptable. it is to give in to our own
uncertainty, to our the apathy we have
fought £or so long. compassion knows no
boundaries. this goes beyond us, it has to,
or · t is completely worthless. as we have
built on what has come before those who
come after will build on what we now
accomplish, and in this way the dream that
we will never know can be realized. the
world we cannot hope to see will come to
pass, in someone's lifetime, if not our own.
we can never do enough.

DO YOU SEE IT
YOURSELF AT ALL'?
D: i do see it in myself, but i
have a huge desire for
growth, whether my actions
portray it or not, and i don't
think they do. but i'm
definitely going to change
that. in a lot of people we
hang out with, i see no
difference between them and
just everyone else. that's
fine, but that's also not the
kind of person i want to be
closest to. that's why i'm
closest to Curtis, he's not
like that.
HOW DO YOU THINK
PEOPLE WILL REACT TO
THE ALBUM COMPARED
TO THE 7", DO YOU THINK
PEOPLE WHO LIKED THE T'
WILL LIKE THE LP'?
D: some people will, and i
think we're going to
disappoint some people, but .
that just comes out along
with any new release. i don't _
waste a lot of
concerning myself that F
people are going to turn away

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE
SONG ON THE NEW
RECORDING'?
D: going into the studio i
didn't care for "Division
Street" all that much, it was
an "album filler" kind of song,
but coming out of the studio,
my favorite would probably be
"Box".
-

WHAT'S THE DEAL
THE BONGOS'?
D: well, i had mentioned it
and thought about
incorporating it into a
different song, i wanted to .
·· use some different sort of ·
percussion to get a tribal
kind of sound. i didn't want it
to sound the way it came out
on the album, but ...
C: the static sucks anyway ...

we had lanned.
OK, I ASKED YOU THIS IN
THE FIRST INTERVIEW WAY
BACK WHEN, SO I'LL ASK

YOUR FEELINGS ON THE
"SCENE" IN INDY'?
D: i like it, i have to say i love
it . . . hand in hand with a lot
of the negative things that
come with the turnout, i 7
think the positive aspects
outweigh it. i think people are

that's not what i want to do.
i'm scared what's going to

diminished power will lead to an increase in
The power of the pornographer is
the power of men. The exploitation of the
woman gagged. hung. photographed and
published is the sexualized inferiority and
human worthlessness of women. If men
cannot gag. hang. photograph. and publish
women. men will have less power and women
will have more rights.
Because the establishment of equality
means taking power from those who have it.
power protected by law. those who have
wrongful power hate equality and resist it.
They defend the status quo through bigotry
and violence or sophistication and intellect. .
They say that rights will be lost if society
changes. They mean that power will be lost,
by them. This is true.
The Constitution, including the Bill
Rights , has served to defend wrongful
power and to protect inequality and
exploitation. This is primarily because
lacks and women were not recognized as fully
human and their inequality was built into
the basic structure of constitutional law. . .
Without equality as a fundamental value,
"rights" is a euphemism for "power", and
legally protected dominance will continue to
preclude any real equality.

IS SPLIT LIP GOING TO BE
AROUND AFTER THE TOUR,
EVEN THOUGH CURTIS
WILL BE LEAVING? DO
YOU HAVE ANY PLANS ON
THAT?
we really have two
choices, we can get a new
bass player and keep the
name, and just keep doing
what we are; or we can get a -
new bass player and change
the name, or we can just quit
all together. we won't quit,
i'm sure, but to get a new
bass player ... Dirk said if we
were going to change the
name to do it now, for his
benefit, for this album, but
we decided not to do that. if
we change the name it's
going to be like starting over.
so we'll probably keep the ·
name and get some one new.
it won't be the same and we'll
probably get
decline ...
YOU'LL KEEP THE
NAME, HAVE YOU EVER
THOUGHT ABOU
CHANGING IT ANYWAY?
D: oh yeah, but it's gotten
to the point that it would be
typical, because everyone
expects us to. It would be like
"oh, i always thought they
should have changed the
name" . it seems
predictable now.
C: there's definitely worse
names out there.
D: and when people hear this
album they'll definitely know
we're not big tough guys that
want to beat people up.

DO YOU THINK YOU HAVE

HOW DO YOU THINK IT
TURNED OUT/ HOW DID
YOU LIKE IT'?
CURTIS: we recorded thirty
hours and mixed another
twenty hours, fifty hours
total, i think it came out
really good.
HOW WOULD YOU
DESCRIBE THE SOUND ON
IT'?
more powerful, but in
a different way- relying on
striking some sort of a chord
in somebody. not like "in your
face", but in the mixing of the
melody of the music with the
melody of the vocals, with
the lyrical content. the
pattern of the music and the
pattern of the vocals make it
a powerful recording.

WHAT WOULD BE YOUR
MUSICAL INFLUENCES ON
THE LP'?
D: lyrically it is based on the
down trodden "please, please,
let me get what i want type
of thing, people that deserve
to be happy, but for some
reason are not. so my
influences are people i know
who aren't happy who i would
like to be happy. that kinda
goes along with the title "For
Love of the Wounded".
C: we are planning to tour
and go everywhere, but we
won't be able to do as much
as we'd like due
circumstances.
D: maybe with MAJORITY OF
ONE.
D: it would be good for us to
have products out there to
sell.
50 HOW DO YOU LIKE
BEING ON DOGHOUSE'?
D: it's only gotten better and
better really ...
C: it could only get better
than it was at the beginning,
we didn't get shit.
you make me sick. sing along, read
the words- have you ever thought it,
that they might be about you? you
don't even see it. i don't even know
what i can say or do. tell me how
good the words are again, but i
wonder when you will live them.
wake up, they are about you, you are
not innocent. read them again, and
again, and again, and again ...
read them until you understand. burn
them into your mind until they
become a part of you.

ok, i'm back, after a too long

any and all who have ordered stuff
from me and got it late, or have yet to
get it- you haven't been forgotten, i'm

takes me way too long to receive my

that they're playing a bar, and with
PRONG i'm not too hip on the whole
situation. their CD has been out on
DOGHOUSE for a while now, but you
probably knew that. check out the
interview. TANNER BOYLE is playing
shows once again, and should be having
a 7" out real soon (if not already) on
RED DA WG RECORDS. they play more
of a poppy/DC/something type music
that's not really my style, but their fun
to see, and nice guys regardless.
PHALANX is a band that sounds sort of
like FARSIDE, if you have to categorize.
since last issue i quit JACKHAMMER,
they picked up another bass player &
recorded a 7" for INITIAL RECORDS,
which has also been out for quite a
they then kicked out their
singer, and then their new bass player,
changed the name to THREE ALARM
JOB, & are supposedly doing a 7" for
DOGHOUSE. they aren't really my cup
of tea musically, and one of them told
me that they just want to get "big", so
enough about them, whatever. ONCE
AGAIN their final show
(which was pretty
also have a 7" out soon,
know the label. GADJE is a new band
with lots of potential, and includes one
of the members of ONCE AGAIN as well.
another new band with a member (or
two?) of ONCE AGAIN is CIRCLE OF
NATIONS. they haven't played yet, so
we'll have to see how it turns out. my
new band BIRTHRIGHT has also started
playing shows, and should be playing
as the weeks progress, we
recorded a few songs on four track just
for the fun of it, send a tape if you want
one, and i'll copy it for you- look for a
real studio release out soon as well, on
CATALYST records i'd expect. i don't
really have any other releases scheduled
right now, but i' m still trying to find
interested bands for a comp., so sxe
bands send recordings if you've got
them, and if you' re interested.
outside of Indy- WAR CRY is a
sxe/animal rights oriented band from
Bloomington, and are expecting a 7"
out soon on MILITANT RECORDS. they
recently played some shows out east as
well. MILITANT is also scheduled to
release the ABNEGATION 7", and as a
rule does sxe vegan ba11ds. also in s.
Indiana, REVEAL #3 should be out as of
ENDPOINT is S1ill. going with
new album on DOGHOUSE,
and an upcoming summer tour. they
have a new drummer, and have also
added pat from SCAB on bass. SCAB
played here not too long ago,
honestly didn't seem to with it. they
have a new drummer too. SCAB was
supposed to have a 7" out on NOBLE
RECORDINGS, but i haven't heard
anything about it for quite a while.
FALLING FORWARD still rules, they have
a 7" on NOBLE, and have a CD on
INITIAL. they'll also be touring with
ENDPOINT. Chicago is making a
comeback with a bunch of zines
(CROSSCHECK, PERSIST,
STORMTROOPER, FRONTLINE,
POSITRON,
EVERLAST plays
heavy hardcore, and they have a demo
out, as well as a 7" coming out on
CHAPTERHOUSE. i also know of ONE
NATION UNDER, CORNERSTONE,
AMMEND, but i have yet to hear
recordings of these bands.
Columbus, Ohio- hello, is any one
there? i have seen one 'zine from there
recently, RESTRAINT, and that's it. the
only Dayton bands that i know of is
DROWNING IN A FLAME, and NEED,
but i'm not sure of their current status'.
speaking of Dayton, the MORE THAN
MUSIC FEST '94 seems to be scheduled
for June 16 & 17, but it is no longer the
" More Than Music" fest, but now
"Music For Music's Sake", how swell.
three shows in two days, not a whole lot
of hardcore bands are playing, so keep
your eyes open. i might show up, well,
maybe not.
i am also booking shows in indianapolis
again, so get in touch,

carmel, in
we are all alone, separate entities cursed with the
constant reminder of our loneliness. to find some
semblance of closeness we do whatever we can,
even though it may only bring us more pain in the
end. we'll throw our bodies together, thinking that
by bridging our skin that we can bridge the gap of
misunderstanding that divides our souls. and we
find pai:n, and more pain, never learning. every
time thinking that this time it will work. we are
being used, by ourselves, for ourselves, but nothing
is ever gained. we are playing a tragic game, but as
long as we think of intimacy as a physical act, we
will never win. sex is not a game, and it will not
bring two people closer than their bodies can get.
true intimacy doesn't work that way, and it remains
after the moments of gratification are long gone.
we have been taught, and we have learned so well.
for our own sakes we must break the cycle of use,
closeness will not come that way, no matter how
hard we wish it would. it is for a few moments
only, and then the reality returns again, and once
again we are as islands. in the end, we are betrayed.
