What is the reciprocating motion? The reciprocating motion is characterised by an alternating back and forth rotation.

The file rotates at a larger angle in the cutting direction than in the opposite which makes it progress along the canal path. Similar to taking two steps forward and one step back youll advance but more carefully. What are the angles in reciprocation? The angle parameters have been minutely optimised for the WaveOne files. They derive from the results of extensive testing and are a part of the proprietary reciprocating solution from DENTSPLY. Whats the speed in reciprocation? The motor is constantly speeding up and slowing down in one direction of rotation before switching directions and speeding up and slowing down in the opposite direction. For this reason you cannot compare the speed value in continuous rotation with the one in reciprocating motion. Why cant I modify the speed, the torque and the angles in reciprocation? The reciprocating parameters have been minutely optimised for the WaveOne files. Modifying these could increase the risk of file breakage and reduce the efficiency. Why isnt there any torque control in reciprocation? The reciprocating angles have been optimised to minimise the risk of file breakage. The motor angle in the cutting direction is inferior to the angle at which the file would start to deform permanently if blocked. Furthermore, the back and forth movement will reduce the risk of blocking the file in the first place. This is why there is no torque control / auto reverse function for the WaveOne files as there is for co ntinuously rotating NiTi file systems. Furthermore, an acoustic warning signal will sound at 75% of maximum torque. In that case, we recommend to remove the file and clean it free from debris. What is the difference between torque in Ncm - as in WaveOne - and torque in gcm? Both are different units of torque. 1 Ncm is equivalent to approximately 10 gcm. Can I use the ATR Tecnika for the reciprocating technique? The ATR Tecnika was not developed for reciprocation. The reciprocating angles are very inexact and vary a lot depending on file resistance. There is also a large speed variance depending on the file resistance. All this leads to an increased risk of file breakage and an inefficient solution compared to the WaveOne endo motor. Furthermore, the ATR Tecnika is no longer manufactured and commercialised. Can I use my ProTaper Universal files or any other continuous file system in reciprocation? No, only DENTSPLY reciprocating files - for which the motor and its settings have been optimised for are compatible with the reciprocating programs in the WaveOne.

WaveOne NiTi files are driven by the WaveOne Endodontic motor which shapes root canals using a reciprocating motion. This motor is calibrated to precisely work with the design of the WaveOne files. This reciprocating motion means the file continuously changes its rotating direction during the shaping

procedure with a large rotating angle in the cutting direction (for high efficiency) and a smaller angle in the reverse direction (to progress along the canal path whilst respecting the root canal anatomy). The optimised angles also assist to reduce the risk of a screwing in effect and file breakage. Requiring only one WaveOne Nickel Titanium instrument to shape a canal in most cases (either Small, Primary or Large size) means that no time is wasted changing NiTi instruments during the root canal shaping procedure and inventory requirements can also potentially be reduced. WaveOne files come pre-sterilised and are designed for single patient use which eliminates the need for disinfecting, cleaning, sterilising and organising and are manufactured using the advanced M-Wire thermal treatment process, which provides greater flexibility as well as increased strength to assist in reducing the risk of cyclic fatigue and file seperation.

Optimised settings in reciprocation The WaveOne motor is pre-programmed with settings for the WaveOne reciprocating file system. The fixed speed and angle parameters have been minutely optimised and are the results of extensive testing by endodontic specialists. Continuous rotation The WaveOne motor is also pre-programmed with our continuous rotation file systems ProTaper Universal, PathFile, ProFile as well as the Gates files. Additionally, there are 15 free programs for individual settings in continuous rotation.
