As wc drovc homc, ! thought about all thc rcccnt cvcnts in our

Covcnant is a loundational principlc ol our laith. Covcnant is a

Covcnant allows us to acccpt our position as cohcirs with Christ
and bc scatcd in covcnant with Christ Jcsus (scc ¡phcsians ! and

Vith somcthing this important it is a wondcr why morc pco

causcs us to losc sight ol thc powcr that is insidc ol covcnant and
makc choiccs bascd upon what lccls good at thc momcnt without
rcalizing that thcy may bc violating covcnant.
Covcnant is a wcllknown tcrm in a busincss cnvironmcnt. Vc

out covcnant bcing involvcd. !l this is truc, thcn how much morc
do wc nccd to undcrstand thc sccrct powcr ol covcnant and how it
allccts cvcry part ol our livcs:
Many marriagcs today bcgin with a contractual mindsct instcad
ol a covcnantal hcart. !n contracts cach party dclincs thc limits ol
his or hcr liabilitics and dividcs thc rcsponsibilitics. Jcsus did not
makc a contract with us—Hc madc a covcnant. Hc did not limit
thc liabilitics, in lact, Hc took upon Himscll all thc liabilitics ol

Hc took upon Himscll all thc rcsponsibilitics lor us and paid thc

go awry. Vhcn covcnant is practiccd, it takcs you through thc
rough spots. Ask thc Holy Spirit to birth a spirit ol covcnant in
your marriagc. Jcsus laid down His lilc bccausc ol thc covcnant Hc
had with His Fathcr.
Ònc ol thc rcasons ! wantcd to writc about covcnant is to clcar
up somc bad thcology that has distortcd and twistcd thc truc mcan
ing ol covcnant. !t is not about dcmanding our rights as bclicvcrs.
Thc only rights wc havc arc duc to His taking on all thc liabilitics
and thc pcnalty lor sin. Vc can ask in laith bclicving and Hc wants
to answcr not bccausc ol our thcology or how much wc undcrstand
about laith. Hc answcrs us bccausc Hc is in covcnant with His
Fathcr. Jcsus said in John !4:!4, “If you ask Me anything in My name,
I will do it.” !t was all about rcvcaling thc goodncss ol His Fathcr.
Pcrhaps onc rcason why somc lind it dillicult to livc in covcnant
is bccausc thcy havc ncvcr cxpcricnccd thc lovc ol thc Fathcr or cvcn
an carthly lathcr. Contracts arc vcry stcrilc and surlacc, but covc

in bchall ol thc wcakcr. Jcsus took our placc not bascd upon a con
tract but on covcnant sworn and backcd by His own blood.
BY THE HOLY SPIRIT
For thc 8ody ol Christ, ! lirmly bclicvc that this is a timc that
thc Fathcr wants us to havc a ncw and dillcrcnt undcrstanding ol

Vhcn wc undcrstand covcnant morc dccply, thcn it will cxpand

As discusscd in thc last chaptcr, God docs cvcrything through

Thcrc arc scvcral advantagcs and purposcs ol covcnants. !n thc

humankind and God. A contract’s purposc is to limit our liabilitics
and to protcct our rights. A covcnant with God takcs on all liabili
tics and wc givc up our rights unconditionally.
Thc lirst covcnant mcntioncd in Scripturc is marriagc. Cov
cnant (Hcbrcwbereeth) mcans to cut. Thc tcrm actually mcant
“cutting ol covcnant.” !n Gcncsis 2:2!, Adam was lormcd out ol
thc dust ol thc carth and woman camc out ol Adam by thc cutting
or opcning up his sidc. Thcrc was cutting involvcd whcn covcnant
was madc bctwccn Adam and ¡vc. !t is important to notc that thc
woman was not lormcd lrom thc dust likc Adam. God brought hcr
out ol man, thus thc namc woman, or out ol man. This is why
Adam cxclaimcd that shc “is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my
flesh” (Gcn. 2:21). Covcnant comcs out ol our hcarts not somc wcd
ding contract that is writtcn on papcr. Thc passagc gocs on to say,
“For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother and be joined
to his wife” (Gcn. 2:24). Thc covcnant was part ol cach ol thcm.
God was prophctically saying man will want to lcavc his lathcr and

Vhcn Christ was on thc cross and thc solidcr took thc spcar

Again covcnant was bcing cut bctwccn Christ and His 8ridc. Just
as ¡vc was takcn lrom thc sidc ol thc lirst Adam, so thc Scc
ond Adam, Jcsus, had a bridc takcn lrom His sidc. Thc blood that
llowcd lrom His sidc was thc purchasc pricc to rcdccm His 8ridc.
Thc sacrilicc is always grcatcr than thc judgmcnt.
Covcnant makcs two bccomc onc so thcrc arc no longcr two

So Hc says ovcr you right now, “You arc bonc ol My bonc and

wc gladly givc up our rights and takc what Hc promiscd. Vith
out thc rcvclation ol God’s gracious covcnant, wc kccp lalling

Nevertheless, the firm foundation of God stands, having
this seal, “The Lord knows those who are His,” and,
“Everyone who names the name of the Lord is to abstain
from wickedness” (2 Timothy 2:19).
Thc loundation is strong as long as it is on thc right prop
crty. !l wc arc living lilc lrom thc owncrship ol Christ, Hc knows
us. Thc sign that wc arc acccpting His covcnant or boundary is
through dcparting lrom iniquity—abstaining lrom wickcdncss,
which mcans lawlcssncss. Thc landmark ol this covcnant is in thc
hcart. Lawlcss bchavior is not taking into account thc landmarks
that Hc has writtcn upon our hcarts (scc 2 Cor. 1:1), and whcn
thosc boundarics arc movcd or compromiscd, thc gatcs arc opcn lor
cvil trcspasscrs into our livcs.
!n thc Ncw Tcstamcnt Paul dcscribcs it likc this, “In Him
|Christ| you were also circumcised with a circumcision made without
hands, in the removal of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of
Christ” (Col. 2:!!). This circumcision ol thc hcart scts a boundary
bctwccn thc kingdom ol darkncss and thc Kingdom ol God. !t is
a linc that thc dcvil is not pcrmittcd to cross and wc arc not pcr
mittcd to movc or altcr or adjust to lit our cultural changcs. Thc
8iblc says that Jcsus Christ is thc samc ycstcrday and lorcvcr (scc
Hcb. !1:8). This statcmcnt also mcans that Hc has not changcd thc
landmarks that kccp us in covcnantal protcction. Thc tcrritory you

Thc issuc camc down to covcnant. Moscs was going to pcrlorm

upon his covcnant rclationship with God, and il hc was not compli

lor His pcoplc, God would not circumvcnt His covcnant.
¡xodus !2 accounts thc cxodus ol thc Hcbrcws out ol ¡gypt.
Thc sign that would scparatc thc Hcbrcws lrom thc judgmcnt that

PROSPERITY OF COVENANT
Galatians 1:!1!4 says, “Christ rcdccmcd us lrom thc cursc ol
thc Law, having bccomc a cursc lor us—lor it is writtcn, ‘Curscd
is cvcryonc who hangs on a trcc’—in ordcr that thc blcssing ol
Abraham might comc to thc Gcntilcs, so that wc would rcccivc thc
promisc ol thc Spirit through laith.”
This truth connccts thc covcnant that God gavc to Abraham
to thc covcnant wc cnjoy as bclicvcrs today. Gcncsis !2:1 dcclarcs
that God wantcd to blcss Abraham so that through him all thc
lamilics ol thc carth would bc blcsscd. !n ordcr lor blcssing to bc
passcd on to othcrs it has to bcgin somcwhcrc. Abraham was thc
starting point lor covcnant blcssing and prospcrity to bc passcd
down through thc gcncrations. Jcsus bccamc thc conncctor to con
ncct thc blcssing ol Abraham to thc promisc ol thc Spirit through
laith. Thc Òld Covcnant ol blcssing could not bring thc promisc
ol thc Spirit. Thc promisc ol thc Spirit according to John !4 would
guidc us into all truth and would convincc and convict us ol sin.
Vith thc covcnant ol thc Spirit, ! don’t havc to gucss bctwccn good

COVENANT CONFIRMS PROSPERITY
You shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who
is giving you the power to make wealth, that He may
confirm His covenant which He swore to your fathers…

mc this wcalth, but to say that thosc who arc not wcalthy arc not

NATURAL LAWS AND LAW OF COVENANT
God has sct in placc principlcs that can bc lollowcd. Thcrc
arc natural laws likc thcrc arc spiritual laws. Gravity is a natural
law that can bc ovcrcomc by undcrstanding thc law ol acrodynam
ics and thrust. 8ut thc law ol gravity docsn’t changc. Gravity will
always want to pull us back to carth no mattcr how long wc havc
bccn in thc air. Likcwisc, thcrc arc consumcr products madc to
makc lilc casicr. !n thc instruction manual, thc manulacturcr spcc
ilics thc usc ol thc product and its limitcd usc. Vhcn thc product
is uscd lor somcthing othcr than its dcsign, thcn it is bcing uscd
in violation ol manulacturing spccilications. For cxamplc, automo
bilcs arc dcsigncd to takc us lrom onc placc to anothcr, lor thc
purposc ol transportation. Vhcn a car is uscd to knock down a
trcc, thc rcsult can bc latal lor thc car and thc drivcr.
Similarly, whcn wc lunction insidc thc principlcs ol covcnant,
thc lull potcntial ol God’s intcntions arc cxpcricnccd. Vhcn thosc
principlcs arc violatcd, thc rcsult is not God’s bcst or His will.
Òltcn thcrc arc thosc who gct angry with God and blamc Him
lor thc rcsults ol thcir violations. Though Hc docs not lovc us any
lcss lor violating and stcpping out ol covcnant, thc rcsults duc to
brcaching His covcnant arc laid at our door.

Hc’s saying, “Valk with Mc, and scc what !’ll do. Tcst Mc, and
scc il !’ll not opcn thc windows ol Hcavcn.” Vhcrc’s thc sign ol

miah 1!:1!11 saying in a prophccy conccrning thc coming Mcssiah
“…I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel
and with the house of Judah, not like the covenant which
I made with their fathers |Moscs| in the day I took them
by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My
covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to
them,” declares the Lord. “But this is the covenant which
I will make with the house of Israel after those days,”
declares the Lord, “I will put My law within them and
on their heart….”
This is not rclcrring to thc hcart as a physical organ that pumps
