"...The question naturally arises: Can the men and women of this world ever fully respond to the longing for fraternity placed within them by God the Father? Will they ever manage by their power alone to overcome indifference, egoism and hatred, and to accept the legitimate differences typical of brothers and sisters? "By paraphrasing his words, we can summarize the answer given by the Lord Jesus: 'For you have only one Father, who is God, and you are all brothers and sisters' (cf. Mt 23:8-9). The basis of fraternity is found in God’s fatherhood. We are not speaking of a generic fatherhood, indistinct and historically ineffectual, but rather of the specific and extraordinarily concrete personal love of God for each man and woman (cf. Mt 6:25-30). It is a fatherhood, then, which effectively generates fraternity, because the love of God, once welcomed, becomes the most formidable means of transforming our lives and relationships with others, opening us to solidarity and to genuine sharing...." Building relationships with faith based and non-faith based partners in parish social ministry to promote fair trade in Fond du Lac, WI For the past several years, Holy Family has promoted fair trade. It is through its partnership with the Just Fare market, our region's first fair trade inititive, that it is able to effectively achieve one of its social ministry goals--to support Fair Trade by helping farmers and workers in developing countries. Through education and fair trade sales, Holy Family parishioners have learned how purchases through their everyday shopping helps to reduce poverty and assures that farmers from the developing world are paid a fair and stable price, increasing the quality of living around the world. With the help of the Just Fare Market, here are just a few of the ways we do that. Just Fare is housed at a Presbyterian church down the road from Holy Family. But it is more than a walk in fair trade dealer. The Just Fare Education Committee works with area churches and other a volunteer groups to organize several annual external markets at various events, such as parish alternative gift fairs, Marian University social justice events, UW-Fond du Lac Prairie Fest, and the Fond du Lac Area United for Diversity Celebrate Community event. The Education Committee also works with students from the Multicultural Clubs at UW-Fond du Lac and Moraine Park Technical College to present forums regarding the ongoing exploitation of labor rights, child labor, forced labor and trafficking. Just Fare, along with Holy Family Catholic Community, Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes, and many other local churches and retailers are also active participants in the Fond du Lac Fair Trade Town efforts. Fond du Lac was recently named the 32nd Fair Trade Town in the U.S.; see http://fonddulacfairtradetown.wordpress.com/. National Partners The USCCB Office of Justice, Peace, and Human Development (JPHD) will host the Catholic Social Ministry Gathering, Feb. 2-5, 2014, in Washington, D.C. JPHD also invites you to participate in Poverty Awareness Month. Click here for resources.
