Another great opportunity that has been presented at WWC has been the publication MDNews in the Greater Kansas edition. This is a wonderful article that shows what we do at Williamson Wellness Center and what we want to continue to offer you as a client. Dr. Williamson’s expertise is second to none and that is shown in this publication. Thank you for those that participated in the WWC 12 days of Christmas. It was a great success. We had many winners and one GRAND Prizewinner. Mr. Warren Meyer received a sporty WWC jacket. We continue to offer massages at WWC by appointment only (Monday or Friday). We have a great therapeutic and specialty massage therapist (Betty Turner) that will come on site and handle any of your needs. Please call WWC to make an appointment.

The Chili cook off was a great success!! We had 4 different chili’s and 2 different cornbread’s to choose from. Santa even decided to stop by! Again thank you to all of those that participated and it was a great start for the holiday. The winner of the chili cook-off was Ms. Gayle McManus. She made a lovely Creamy White Chicken Chili. We are lucky enough to have the recipe in this month’s newsletter! Thank you Gayle!

A new year, a new start, Jackie has described the situation well. I recently heard a sermon that basically stated to start your year with "one word, one thought". A lady shared "pause" which I thought was great. There are times we all need to "pause". Need I say more! May be your word will be consistent or strength or patience or joy. As you consider your "world", your "life", make it simple and focus on a word that can a deep, thoughtful and significance to YOU. Of course, you know I want you to be thinking about your health and fitness goals, right? Yes, yes, I am glad we are on the same "page". : )

Never too old to sit on Santa’s lap! Dennis Gray and Warren Meyer

On April 12, 2013 a client raced to the front door and yelled to a colleague who was walking by the Center, "Come in here". Not knowing what was happening, the gal walked into the Center and stated, "This is where I need to be". Now, eight months later and 108 lbs. later, we have a new person continuing to work-out at Williamson Wellness Center. She is a remarkable lady with spunk, wit, and a HUGE motivating heart to get her weight down. Her sister was recently diagnosed with diabetes and was heavier. Secondly, she simply didn't have the energy to truly "function" in everyday life. For example: She would drop her nieces and nephews off at the mall or putt-putt and gave them a time when she would come return for them. She shopped predominantly on-line, didn't get out much, never was comfortable flying for work or for pleasure. In fact, she would avoid any movement that she thought would cause her to be physically uncomfortable. We attended a WSU basketball game in December at Intrust Bank Arena and we parked four blocks from the arena when she said to me, "I never could have done this in April...." I gasped as it had not even occurred to me. I said, "What would you have done?" She said laughing, "I would have paid for closer parking". During the last eight months, I would hold a 25 lb. dumbbell in each hand and say, "here, this is what is was like when you carried an extra 50 lbs. She would shake her head, hold the weights, be amazed, and we would continue. Just to give you

an idea....we have measure circumferences of four areas of her body during the last eight months. She has lost over 32 inches on her body. Over 12 inches at her hips and over 10 inches at her waist. She literally has lost an entire person. Exercise surely helped, and as a former athlete, she came into the Center and played. What she did the other 99% of the hours during the week was follow a regimen. She was on Take Shape for Life, Be Slim program. More importantly, she was and still is motivated, driven, determined, and maintained a hilarious disposition. Her support team was available to her, people have not even recognized her as of late. However, deep within this gal is something we can all aspire to become or reconnect. This gal is walking, running, playing, shopping, and not afraid to get out and experience a new life, a new found being......her true self. She inspires me daily, hourly, and I have had the privilege of watching the transformation. Congratulations, my friend.

If you want to lose some body fat, there are five ways that will work without fail. You have probably tried them all. If they haven’t worked for you, chances are that you think of traditional slimming methods as “losing weight,” when you actual goal is losing fat. Rather than concentrating on the numbers shown by a scale. Scale numbers can go up and down, depending on how much water your body is holding or how much digested food is still in your gut. When it comes to fat loss, numbers can be misleading. 1. Exercise- Exercise will activate three systems that use up those stored calories. About 20 minutes into active exercise, when the body runs out of available energy and has to reach into the fat storage. After the exercise session is repeated a few times, the metabolism adapts by speeding up. A faster metabolism requires more energy, which it gets from stored calories. At the same time, muscles that are now working harder than before adapt by getting stronger. 2. Diet – to lose fat and KEEP it off, you never go on ‘a diet.’ Instead, you change your way of eating. Drink water! Also take slightly smaller portions than usual. Your stomach will adjust within a week, and so will your eyes.  3. Stress- Concentrate on lowering the amount of stress you feel. Stress Photo credit: google images can cause you to eat at different times and grab some “not so healthy” snacks. We will always have stress, but how we manage stress will make the difference. 4. Sleep- Dozens of studies have shown that people who don’t get enough sleep tend to hold on to fat and store it more easily. Plan to get at least seven to eight hours of uninterrupted sleep a night. 5. Time- Drastic “weight loss” measures never work; doing it too quickly means you also lose muscle tissue, which leaves you gaunt and irritable. The fat lost by depriving yourself of nutrition or by taking pills will always return. Losing fat slowly and naturally will help achieve the results you are looking for. Continually using these five ways will keep those fat pounds off!
