Attendance – much of our learning will take place together in class.

We do lots of hands on activities and group work. Please plan to attend school everyday, except in cases of illness or emergency. If your child is absent please call the office (354-4852). We have Art with Mrs. White

I will schedule your child to bring snacks on his/her birthday. We will celebrate half birthdays for our friends with summer birthdays. Please do not send birthday party invitations to be distributed at school – it is against our school policy. I will send home book order forms for you and your child to look over every few months. It is a great way to build your child’s home library!

Parent/Teacher Conferences are held twice a year. These meetings are very important; please make every effort to come. Conferences will be held on Oct. 22/24 as well as April 1/3. Communication is important. Feel free to contact me whenever you have a question, comment or concerns.

Discipline is simple, “We do the right thing because it’s the right thing to do”. We work hard as a class to make the classroom a positive and safe place for all.

My school email address is audrey.graves@yukonps.com. I check email throughout the day. Please make sure I have an email address for you as well!

Information about field trips will come home in the take home binder. Our field trip is usually close to the end of the year.

Grades will look completely different this year. Yukon has adopted a standards based report card and that uses a 1-4 scale rather than the traditional S, P & N. This will be discussed further at the parent meeting. Our class will have a 50-minute gym class with Mr. Biggs. I will usually put P.E. days on the weekly newsletter so your child can dress accordingly.

Homework will focus on mastering sight words. Your child will also bring home an Everyday Math Skills Link workbook that you can work on at home. (On their own pace) This will give you a better understanding of the math concepts we are learning.

Independence is a goal for students because it builds self-esteem and self-confidence. First graders are very capable of doing many things on their own and I encourage them to do as much as they can for themselves. Please work on the following self-help skills at home with your child: zipping coats, tying shoes, etc.…

Writing takes place every day in first grade. One way we accomplish this is through writing in our journals. Encourage your child to write at home for a variety of purposes.

Soon we will begin Library class and your child will be brining home library books. Please make sure they bring them to school everyday. Lunch/Recess is from 11:30-12:15.

Our math program is Everyday Math. We will do a variety of math each day and will work in a math journal, which will be left at school. I will send home assessments for you to see their progress.

Newsletters with class updates and information will be sent home every Monday. Look for it in your child’s take home binder. Watch for No Schooldays listed in the Skyview Scoop.

Open House is in November. Please plan to attend this event to learn more about our daily classroom activities and see our fabulous work and classroom!

Oct 22. 1460 Our ultimate goal in first grade is to read 60 words in one minute.Progress reports will be sent home on Sept 18. I WILL NOT release your child to ANYONE or change his or her routine of transportation unless we hear from you directly.
