WEBCT: TROUBLESHOOTING

How to Deal With Problems When Using WebCT

Introduction
You can access WebCT from any computer that has Internet access, allowing you to work off campus. With this flexibility there are some inevitable issues to overcome, because we cannot guarantee that everyone’s computer will be set up to use WebCT to its full potential. The aim of this leaflet is to overcome common problems, so that you can use WebCT successfully. So what do you do, when …

… your password does not seem to work?
If you have large fines on your account, make sure that it hasn’t been locked until payment. Also because your password is case sensitive, make sure that Caps Lock on your keyboard is not turned on. If you still cannot log on, contact Learning Services and ask for a new password. Contact details are on the back of this leaflet.

… you click on a link, especially in discussion, and nothing seems to happen?
Firstly, check if the page has opened in a Web Browser window that is hidden behind the page that you can see. You will be able to see any open windows on the taskbar at the bottom of your screen. Clicking on one of the buttons on the taskbar will display that window on your screen. If not, the problem may be caused by software on your computer that blocks pop-up windows. This software is designed to stop pop-up adverts appearing on your machine, but it can also stop WebCT from opening things like Discussion messages. Check if ‘Norton Internet Security’, or similar software is on the computer that you are using. This has a setting that stops pop-ups from opening. Disable the setting and restart your computer. If this does not help, the problem may be with another piece of software. ‘Google Toolbar’ for example, allows pop up windows only on certain sites. If you have this, log onto WebCT and click on the button on the Google Toolbar shown below, which will allow pop-up windows from our WebCT site

With other software that blocks pop-ups, e.g. toolbars from MSN or Yahoo, and web browsers like Netscape 7 and Internet Explorer 6, you may need to add http://webct.edgehill.ac.uk/ to their lists of trusted sites. If you cannot disable the pop-up blocker or change the settings, try holding down the [Ctrl] key on your keyboard while clicking on the link. This temporarily disables some pop-up blockers.

… a message box appears with the message “WebCT is not configured to run inside a frameset”?
This message usually appears when part of the page has not loaded properly. When you get the message you may see that one of the frames that make up the page is missing. This can happen when your internet connection is slow, and you have clicked on a link before the whole page has loaded. Click the refresh button on your browser, or close your Web Browser and log on to WebCT again.

… you try to log on to WebCT, but get taken to a search page (e.g. PerfectNav)?
This is often caused by ‘Parasite’ software, which may be installed on your computer when you download free software (for information see ‘http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/’). Getting rid of this is something that you will have to undertake yourself, but most students have managed this.

… Word documents, from WebCT, open up in the Web Browser, when you want them to open in Word?
If you use Windows operating system, you can change your settings as so: 1. Double click My Computer on your desktop. 2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options. 3. Click the File Types tab. 4. In the Registered file types list, click to select DOC, and then click Advanced. 5. Click to unselect the Browse in same window check box. Then, click OK and Close. If you do not have a copy of Microsoft Word, you can download a Word Viewer. This lets you read the file but does not let you make changes. See the ‘Institutional Bookmarks’ on the right hand side of your ‘myWebCT’ page for details.

… you want to print PowerPoint slides, but can only view the full screen slide show in WebCT?
The instructions below will allow you to view the presentations inside the Web Browser, but you may not have the permissions to do this on the campus network. When you right click the presentation, you can select Print, and print either the slides, or the handout sheets (i.e. with several slides on each sheet). 1. Double click My Computer on your desktop. 2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options. 3. Click the File Types tab. 4. In the Registered file types list, click to select PPT, and then click Advanced. 5. Click to select the Browse in same window check box. Then, click OK and Close. If you do not have a copy of Microsoft PowerPoint, you can download a PowerPoint Viewer. This lets you read the file but does not let you make changes. See the ‘Institutional Bookmarks’ on the right hand side of your ‘myWebCT’ page for details.

… you select a WebCT course from the ‘myWebCT’ page, and get the message ‘Access Denied’?
This message means that the tutor who runs the course has chosen to hide it, probably from all the students. This might be temporary while they make updates, but if you still need to use the WebCT area get in touch with them.

… you have other problems?
If your problem is not covered here, it is worth bringing to your attention that WebCT does not work well with some older versions of Web Browsers. It might be worth you going through the ‘WebCT Browser Tuneup’ by typing http://www.webct.com/tuneup into the Address Bar of the Web Browser which you will use to access WebCT, and following the instructions. If you are asked which version of WebCT we are using, it is called ‘CE 4.1’. If you use the AOL browser and have problems, connect to the Internet as usual with the AOL browser. Then open Internet Explorer as well, and use that to access WebCT.
