New Sky 1 is the second level of the four book New Sky series for teenage learners. It may be used as the entry level for students who have studied English for 2 or 3 years in Primary school. Language is presented through situations, using recorded dialogues illustrated with authentic photographs. These are used for basic reading and listening comprehension tasks and later used for Listen and Repeat. Learners are presented with a wide range of vocabulary, usually through pictures, which is used as learners personalize the language to talk and write about their own lives and experience. Each lesson ends with a memorable song, rhyme, or rap which encapsulates the key language step from the lesson. In each group of five units the fourth unit is either Across the Curriculum + a Picture story which provides extensive reading and listening as well as further contextualization of the language, or Across Cultures which presents information about life in other cultures. This information is always related back to the learners personal experience of the world and local culture. Both Across the Curriculum and Across Cultures lessons conclude with a Project for possible inclusion in the European Language Portfolios Dossier section. The fifth unit in each group revises the grammar and vocabulary from previous units. These revision units develop further exercise types. The topics and situations used have been chosen to be relevant to the lives and interests of young teenagers. This attention to the age group is also shown in the exercise material which is interesting, achievable and challenging. The authentic photographic material contributes cultural development to every page. Through the variety of exercise tasks, students learn to complete forms, read and write emails, describe possessions and animals, talk about countries and nationalities, routines, locations, numbers, times and prices, do survey and report the results, complete crossword puzzles, word search and play board games. There is specific training in communicative writing skills matching the requirements of CEF A1. These developmental skills contribute to the students learning across the curriculum. There are a total of 40 units in New Sky 1 which means that the learning step in each unit is quite small, making the series achievable even for slow or reluctant learners. The language introduced in New Sky 1 completes most of the requirements of A1 level of the Common European Framework. These are fully completed in New Sky 2 which also introduces language and skills at A2 level.
