After-school Art Program at the Middle Schools

By Chris Bennett and Fawn Holman Dublin offers art classes at the elementary and high school levels, but only offers limited classes at the middle school level. DPIE is stepping up to help bridge this gap. As part of DPIEs support of arts education, the Board budgeted funds to initiate afterschool art classes at both Wells and Fallon Middle Schools this year. DPIE staff members and art teacher, Pamela Williams, were excited to kick off the program at Wells Middle School in December, offering a three-hour Introduction to Watercolor class to eager young artists. Monthly classes with various themes, such as Portrai-

New Year, New Logo!

By Lacey Book Many long-time DPIE supporters have become accustomed to the logo representing our organization. Logos are typically updated every so often to keep up with the times. DPIE is no exception. The current logo was last updated in 2007. It has served us well. We now need a new logo that both reflects what DPIE is today and is more helpful for communicating in the digital age. Our new logo should reflect the updated version of the DPIE you know today and still maintain the look you have grown to expect. In January, we will start officially rolling out a new DPIE logo (see it below). Let us know what you think! Tell us on our FACEBOOK page. If you havent yet liked us on Facebook, please doand leave your comments.

DPIE is Moving!
Before the end of January, well be in our new home at Wells Middle School.

Watch for more Details!

Although we love our current logo, a lot has changed in the past seven years. Our organization has grown as we have created new ways to give back to the Dublin Unified School District. For example, weve updated programs and started new ones, including the Enrichment Academy. The world of communication has also changed. In 2007, Facebook had been publically open for only four months and now over a billion people use it every month. In 2007, spending on digital advertising was $21 billion and in 2013 this amount had increased to $503 billion! People are talking online all the time.

2014
As we bid farewell to our hard-working old logo, wed like to point out a fun-fact. Even after seeing our old logo hundreds of times many may not know that the leaf over the apple is not a leaf at all. It is, in fact, a briefcase! We recognize that the briefcase has also gone out of style. But instead of exchanging our briefcase for a smartphone we thought the leaf would do just fine.

Janets New Role

In our Q3 newsletter, we announced the retirement of former DPIE executive director, Janet Lockhart. We are happy to announce that we spoke too soon! Janet has agreed to stay on with DPIE in a newly created role of Enrichment Academy Superintendent. As DPIE approaches the Academys third year and now that the Enrichment Academy has received its WASC accreditation, Janet will be responsible to grow the program regionally and create a more robust operating infrastructure. She will oversee the Academy program day-to-day in 2014. In her new role, Janet will report to DPIEs Executive Director, Fawn Holman.

January Visioning Retreat Planned

On Saturday, January 18, 2014, the DPIE Board of Directors will meet for a halfday Visioning Retreat. The purpose of this retreat is to review our current mission and its Four Pillars (CARE = Career Exploration for Students, Arts Education, Resources for Educators, and Education Support); to recommit to or adjust these core elements; and to identify pragmatic ideas to put these elements into practice. If you have ideas for DPIE, please contact Fawn Holman.

From the Presidents Office

Dear Friends, As we all conclude a busy season and get ready for a fresh start, I wanted to take a moment and wish each of you a very Happy New Year. Thanks to all of the individual and business contributors who have shown support for DPIE and our public schools during 2013. We are truly blessed to have such a wonderful community that makes education for our children a priority. As we reflect on 2013, we see that it was another successful year for DPIE and our schools. Continued support for fundraising activities and donations from local businesses have allowed DPIE to continue to make progress in school programing such as the Enrichment Academy, Career Pathways, and re-invented Art Programs. Without your support nothing would be possible and we extend our sincerest appreciation. 2014 is sure to bring many opportunities and challenges for all of us. DPIE is no different. We continue to look for opportunities to add value to our children and schools and are always challenged to find the resources to fulfill so many of the needs within our schools. Whether it is your time and knowledge you can offer as a volunteer or a financial contribution to help fund programs, please consider DPIE and our public schools as a worthy organization when you make commitments for 2014. Best Wishes to You and Yours in 2014,

Community Spotlight
Rotary Dictionary Giveaway
By Rich Boschetti For the 6th year in a row DUSD third graders received Dictionaries in an ongoing partnership between the Rotary Club of Dublin and Dublin Partners in Education. Given the broad use of computers these days, some might think dictionaries are a thing of the past, but you sure couldnt tell that from the reaction of our young readers. One excited Kolb Elementary recipient exclaimed, Thank you so much for the dictionary, the pictures in it are so cool! It is so nice of you guys to give the dictionaries to us for free. There are so many words in it and the definitions are easy to read. Another young reader from Frederiksen Elementary said, It makes me feel so proud when I open the book and see my name on the front page, it feels like Ive been rewarded. I love looking up words like dyslexia and kookaburra. Its easy to read and the pictures are really cool. The Dictionary Project originated as an effort by the Dublin Rotary to help young people learn the power of words. Since the programs inception, over 3,300 third graders have been given dictionaries. Words and how we use them make a difference in our lives, explained Dublin Rotary President, Janine Thalblum. Our goal is to help make sure kids have the tools they need to be successful in school. With just a little bit of an investment, we can impact every student in our school district. Dublin Rotary allocated $7,300 and DPIE contributed $1,800 for the gradeappropriate dictionaries for this years 725 recipients. This years distributions were huge events that felt like parties as each of the schools celebrated Dictionary Day. The kids just love getting these books, said DPIE Executive Director, Fawn Holman. It is so much fun to watch them open their books and start searching for words as soon as the dictionaries are in their hands.

Art Program (continued from page 1)

ture Painting, Bookmaking, Street Chalk Art and Decorative Pot Mosaics (offered as part of a campus beautification project) are planned for the remainder of the school year. Plans for similar offerings at Fallon Middle School are in the works and we hope to kick off the Fallon program with the New Year. Kevin Grier, Principal at Wells Middle School, said, "I am so happy to have the art program return to Wells as an elective option for students. Thanks to DPIE, Wells is able to offer art as an after-school enrichment class so that even more students can explore their creative talents.
