Y

ou’ve very likely driven
past our store for most of
your life on the way to
some corporate jeweler in the
mall, but have you ever wondered
how this little jewelry store has
been here for so long? The major-
ity of the other businesses around
us have changed over several
times. One of our neighbors has
been a pizzeria, a pet store and
now a tattoo parlor. For about 26
years we’ve been a local
Pequannock business and that’s
no easy accomplishment. The rea-
son for this was the unique paring
of two friends who had both been
in different parts of the jewelry
business. This combined a gemol-
ogist with years of experience in
the NYC diamond district with a
fourth-generation jewelry manu-
facturer.
Much of the reason for the
success of Boston Louis Jewelers
lies in our extensive knowledge
and experience in the field of dia-
monds and jewelry, and we openly
share that knowledge with our
customers. And while yes, we are
just a small store in a small town,
our connections are worldwide.
If you are shopping for an
engagement ring or other dia-
mond jewelry, you could just buy
it from a no-faced source on the
Internet, or from a mall salesper-
son with a year’s experience under
his belt. Before you do that,
though, you might drop by Boston
Louis just for the heck of it. We
challenge you to! We aren’t high-
pressure sellers. We will very like-
ly enlighten you, and even more
importantly, get you a better deal
on a better quality diamond.
We’ve found over the years
that pretty much everyone who
has taken the time to let us edu-
cate them about diamonds has
bought from us. We’re real jewel-
ers — professional jewelers who
have spent decades in the dia-
mond trade — and we’ve been
where we are for a long time
because we educate and care for
our customers.
If you are curious about
learning more about diamonds
before making a purchase, please
feel free to drop by Boston Louis
Jewelers, 151 Newark-Pompton
Turnpike in Pequannock.

I
always look forward to con-
firming with my accountant
how much I will save each
year by making a tax-
deductible contribution to my
qualified plan. As a self-
employed individual, I am
allowed to contribute the max-
imum contribution to a simpli-
fied employee pension (SEP)
plan — $51,000 for 2013. At
the federal income tax bracket
of 39.6 percent, this is a tax
savings of $20,196. Stated dif-
ferently, the government will
pay me $20,196 to save
$51,000. Stated yet a different
way, I will lose $21,196 if I
don’t save the $51,000 afforded
me by the IRS for investing for
my retirement. This makes a
very compelling argument to
make this contribution every
year, but is it really worth it?
Let’s envision my SEP
contribution as a shot glass
filled with water. Over the
years, as I continue to fund my
SEP and it continues to grow
from the compounded rate of
return on top of the contribu-
tions, the little shot glass soon
becomes a pitcher of water.
When I’m retired and I need to
pour the water out of the pitch-
er to drink, the remaining
water in the pitcher will con-
tinue to earn interest, divi-
dends and appreciation from
the stock market. In essence,
the water flowing from the
pitcher through the rest of my
life could fill a bathtub to the
brim!
The government says one
of these vessels must be taxed
— the shot glass, the pitcher or
the bathtub — but it leaves the
choice to me. The tax-deduc-
tion I take for the SEP contri-
bution is making the shot glass
tax deductible. The pitcher,
which represents the accumu-
lation, grows tax-deferred. The
disbursed income, represented
by the bathtub, whether I live
to spend it all or die with a tub
full of water, will be 100 per-
cent taxable, either to me or
my beneficiaries. With my
choice to take the deduction
today, I am choosing to tax the
biggest pile of money, the
income for the rest of my life.
My kids will bear the burden of
paying income tax on the
remainder, not to mention NJ
estate tax, as well as a potential
federal estate tax.
After second thought,
perhaps taking the deduction
on the shot glass was an
improper bet, since I will ulti-
mately pay more tax on the
biggest pile of money, the bath-
tub size portion. Yet, common
sense dictates that I take the
deduction now for the very
compelling reasons stated in
the opening paragraph.
It is a very confusing con-
cept, since the tax savings from
the SEP contribution could be
saved and invested as well to
grow an even larger amount for

retirement. Some tax profes-
sionals argue that deductions
should be taken today since you
will be in a lower tax bracket in
the future when retired. Many
of my clients have found this
point-of-view not to be the
case. Their tax bracket either
remained the same or increased
for various reasons, wreaking
taxation havoc on their annual
income and ultimately their
bequest.
What if there were a way
to benefit from both disciplines
by taking the deductions to
fund your contributions to an
IRA, 401k, profit-sharing or
pension plan while working,
then having the ability to enjoy
tax-free income in retirement,
as well as passing-on your
wealth tax-free to your favorite
charities, and your children
and grandchildren? The con-
cept can be applied for people
during their working and port-
folio accumulation years, as
well as those individuals
already retired with larger tax-
able IRA balances in their
portfolio spending years.
If you or someone you
know is age 70 or above, forced
by the government to make the
required minimum withdrawal
from their IRA and if they
weren’t forced out, didn’t need
the money and would rather
leave it in their account for
P
robiotics, or non-harm-
ful bacteria, aren’t just
for digestion anymore.
A 30-year study from the
Forsyth Institute of Harvard
has shown that a few naturally
occurring bacteria can actual-
ly fight off harmful oral bacte-
ria. Probiora3 is a patented
blend of these beneficial bac-
teria that safely and effective-
ly helps maintain a healthy
mouth.
Probiora3 supports den-
tal and gum health by growing
below the gum line and on the
chewing surfaces. It competes
with harmful bacteria for
nutrients and space, and helps
reduce the bacteria that cause
bad breath.
These probiotics also
naturally whiten teeth. They
produce a continuous dose of
hydrogen peroxide, the tooth-
whitening chemical, as a nat-
ural byproduct. A four-week
study shows that when replen-
ished daily, these probiotics
whitened dental surfaces
around the clock.
Probiora3 is free of sugar,
wheat, gluten, dairy, soy, arti-
ficial flavors and colors, and is
100 percent natural. What a
great new way to a healthy
smile!

roponents of marriage
may quote any number
of reasons why couples
should tie the knot instead of
living a life of singlehood. A
desire to raise children togeth-
er is one reason many couples
wed, but getting hitched
might also be better for your
health. That’s right, a growing
body of evidence has suggested
marriage may be beneficial for
men and women from a health
and wellness standpoint.
A 2006 study published
in the Journal of Epidemiology
and Community found that,
compared with married peo-
ple, people who are widowed,
are divorced/separated or have
never married are more likely
to die earlier. In addition to a
greater combined wealth that
may make access to health
insurance or better healthcare
possible, there are a number of
possible reasons behind why
married couples tend to be
healthier and happier.
•Safety: Being married and
committed to one partner
reduces your risk of developing
a disease through intimate
encounters. Furthermore, mar-
ried couples tend to be less
involved in behaviors that
may put them at risk for vio-
lent altercations between oth-
ers. Research by the United
States Justice Department has
found that single and divorced
women are four to five times
more likely to be victims of
violence in any given year
than women who are married,

Emmy-nominated “Sell This
House,” agrees that color
palettes will embrace a variety
of bold, punchy accent colors
but also notes a seismic shift in
neutrals from the “brown
fatigue” of browns and beiges to
bright gallery whites and truly
neutral grays. Purples can be
paired with accents of copper
and well-worn leather in a mas-
culine den; layered with gold,
gray and white for an elegant
bedroom; or highlighted
against subway tile and chrome
fixtures for a statement master
bathroom.

IT’S ONLY NATURAL
Miami-based ASID and
IIDA award-winning interior
and furniture designer Bea Pila
sees natural elements increas-
ingly created into luxurious fur-
nishings. Look for lamps
embellished with geodes and
natural gems, feather-adorned
pillows and sharkskin as a rich
table finish. Stone and stone
veneers make for an interesting
organic interior wall covering,
says Debbie Wiener of My
Designing Solutions, as do
sticks gathered in groups as
triptychs or propped up against
the wall.
LIGHTEN UP
Lighting can make a key
difference in a home by setting
the atmosphere of a room or
helping showcase decor ele-
ments. LED bulbs deliver the
same warm glow as traditional
incandescents but use 84 per-
cent less energy and last up to
20 years, according to Maxwell
Ryan, founder and CEO of
Apartment Therapy. Interior
design expert and
InStyleModern.com executive
Maria Samuels suggests multi-
tiered chandeliers and other
ornamental fixtures using LED
lights to give a modern twist
instead of traditional artificial
illumination.
THE FURNITURE FORE-
CAST
Pila notes that 60s-
inspired acrylic furnishings can
be timeless when designed into
a classic silhouette, with the
pureness of the acrylic’s clear-
ness creating a striking effect.
Washington, DC designer
Darlene Molnar predicts that
velvet sofas will be a top trend
in 2014, with jewel colors or
gray bringing a soft elegance to
rooms after years of sharp clean
lines. And furniture designer
Clint Parker notes that Earth-
friendly, sustainable eco-furni-
ture is gaining steam, with new
composites and fabrics such as
hemp and sorghum making the
concept more accessible.
ACCESSORIZE THE POSI-
TIVE
Anything goes in the
world of accessories. Pila notes
an African influence in lamps
made of horn and Kuba cloths
fashioned into pillows, rugs and
blankets, while Ian Kennedy of
Ruby + George touts Native
American-inspired artwork,
rugs and antlers passed down
from generation to generation.
Wiener suggests gas-fired home
“fire walls” under a wall-
mounted big-screen television
that can serve as a source of
warmth and an art focal piece.
THE SIMPLE LIFE
Internationally recognized
artist and award-winning
Austin designer Pablo
Solomon sees a continuation of
uncluttered, simple, practical,
multifunctional and renewable
designs. He recommends
adopting the mantra “less is
more” to focus on quality, not
quantity, when it comes to art,
rugs and furnishings. Tie interi-
or design with outside land-
scape views to evoke a feeling
of openness and flow from the
inside out.
WHAT’S OLD IS NEW
AGAIN
Los Angeles-based Linda
Brettler, AIA, suggests finding
creative ways to repurpose,
recycle and reuse by relocating
pieces from other rooms in the
house or seeking out older, bet-
ter-made items from architec-
tural salvage sites. Salvaged or

earning how to stop
your puppy from chew-
ing can become a diffi-
cult chore that will leave you
frustrated, especially
when it gets hold of
your favorite pair of
shoes, or when it’s con-
stantly chewing on you!
If you want to stop
your puppy from chew-
ing, there are a few
things that you need to
understand about it
before you just blame it
for its behavior.
Chewing is a natu-
ral part of being a puppy.
Rather than trying to stop it
from this natural behavior,
you should work toward redi-
recting the problem to anoth-
er source. Get it chew toys
and a bone that it is allowed
to gnaw on to its heart’s con-
tent. It is much easier to redi-
rect a problem than to try and
stop it completely, especially
when the problem is more of a
human problem than a puppy
one.
Another thing to consid-
er is that certain behaviors
tend to instigate chewing,
especially when the puppy is
chewing on you. This can lead
to dog aggression problems
later on, so you need to nip it
in the bud now rather than
put it off.
Again, this is a human
problem as much as a puppy
problem. In order to stop your
puppy from chewing on you,
you need to pay attention to
what you do that instigates it.
Certain sudden movements,
or aggressive behavior toward
your puppy (even in play) will
push it into chewing. Also,
when you are playing, if it
starts chewing on you, stop
the activity.
Dogs can’t distinguish
between playtime and not
playtime. Although they love
to play, the habits that they
will pick up then will transfer
to other times. You should
never allow your dog to play
aggressively and chewing is
one of the easiest bad habits to
break.
When dogs start chew-
ing, redirect them to one of
their play toys, and separate
yourself from them. If the
chewing problem persists, you
may need to keep them in a
kennel until they learn to
behave. Crate training can
take some time, but is very
beneficial in stopping a wide
variety of puppy problems,
including it wanting to chew
on you.
Follow these tips to stop
your puppy from chewing and
to get it under control. It
doesn’t take much, but by pay-
ing attention to your behavior
and redirecting its behavior to
an appropriate toy, you can
get things under control.

while bachelors are four times
more likely to be victims of
violent-crime than men who
are married.
•HEALTH MONITORING:
Married couples may pay
attention to and monitor
changes in each other’s health
more so than boyfriends and
girlfriends. Couples who can
recognize the subtle changes
in physical or emotional
health may be able to identify
problems before they become
more serious. Couples may
also be able to urge spouses to
make appointments for rou-
tine health screenings and fol-
low up on doctors’ appoint-
ments.
•GREATER FINANCIAL
SECURITY: Money is a pri-
mary source of stress for many
men and women. But living in
a dual-income household can
ease some of that stress and the
potential health problems that
come with it. Some research
has indicated that married
men make as much as 40 per-
cent more money than compa-
rable single men, even after
accounting for education and
job history. Marriage could be
seen as an indication of securi-
ty and trustworthiness, traits
appealing to a company.
•INCREASED INTIMACY:
According to information
compiled by Richard Niolon
Ph.D., nearly half of all mar-
ried people engage in intimate
relations twice a week, com-
pared to 20 to 24 percent of
single and cohabitating men
and women. Sex releases
endorphins that improve
mood, can be classified as
moderate exercise, creates a
feel-good environment that
can reduce stress and promotes
further contact between cou-
ples.
•IMPROVES MENTAL
HEALTH: Many people joke
that getting married removes
freedoms that lead to happi-
ness, but researchers find that
this isn’t the case. In their
book, “The Case for Marriage:

Why Married People Are
Happier, Healthier, and Better
off Financially,” authors Linda
Waite and Maggie Gallagher
found married men are only
half as likely as bachelors and
one-third as likely as divorced
guys to take their own lives.
Wives are also much less like-
ly to commit suicide than sin-
gle, divorced or widowed
women. Married people are
much less likely to have prob-
lems with alcohol abuse or
illegal drugs. An international
study of 17 developed nations
from Steven Stack and J. Ross
Eshleman found that “married
persons have a significantly
higher level of happiness than
persons who are not married,”
even after controlling for gen-
der, age, education, children,
church attendance, financial
satisfaction, and self-reported
health.
There are many health-
related benefits to getting
married. Men and women
about to enter into a new life
together can add good health
to the reason why they are
happy about their upcoming
nuptials.

O
ne of the best ways to
prevent or control
cardiovascular dis-
ease is to eat a healthy diet.
Eating a diet rich in fruits,
veggies, lean protein and fiber
— and, of course, low in
greasy fast food — can consid-
erably reduce the risk of heart
disease. Here are six heart-
healthy eating tips for seniors:
1.Buy colorful fruits and veg-
etables. Adults should get at
least five servings per day of
fruits and vegetables. Make
sure you buy a variety of col-
ored fruits and vegetables to
ensure you get the rainbow of
benefits each color has to
offer.
2.Limit high-fat dairy and
meat. Buy skinless cuts of lean
meat with the least amount of
visible fat. Cuts that say “loin”
after them, like sirloin and
tenderloin, are often leaner
cuts. Fatty fish like salmon or
trout can also help increase
the body’s level of healthy
omega-3’s.
3.Eat plenty of nuts and high
fiber foods. Fiber can help
lower blood cholesterol, and it
keeps you full, which helps
you maintain a healthy
weight. You can find fiber in
fruits, veggies, beans and
whole-grain breads and cere-
als, as well as in nuts.
4.Don’t buy butter. Avoiding
butter can help lower choles-
terol. Consider replacing but-
ter with a more healthful
spread like Smart Balance,
Benechol, or Promise, which
contain plant sterols that may
help lower bad cholesterol.
5.Read nutrition labels.
Studies show that people who
read nutrition labels tend to
be slimmer than those who
don’t. It’s easy for salt and
sugar to sneak in to your diet,
especially with prepared foods,
so be sure to always read the
nutrition label.
6.Frozen or canned fruits and
veggies are okay. Remember
that frozen fruits and vegeta-
bles have the same vitamins
and minerals in them. This
knowledge makes keeping the
kitchen stocked with choles-
terol- and blood pressure-low-
ering foods a little easier.
Choose unsalted or unsweet-
ened varieties when possible.

Next time you hit the drive-thru for your morning coffee, a quick bite for lunch or
with the kids after school, pay the bill for the car behind you! Your kindness could
make a difference in someone’s day!
To get started, download a Drive Thru Difference Note
at star991.com. Print out a few copies and take them with
you when you go about your day. Hand it to the cashier to
give to the person in the car behind you. It’s a great little
note to let them know you care and a perfect opportunity
to introduce them to the New Star 99.1...and maybe, just
maybe, introduce them to Jesus.
We would love to hear your stories!

ences serve many pur-
poses on a property and
can even add visual
appeal and value to a home.
A fence can effectively delin-
eate property borders, serve as
a safety barrier and keep pets
and children from wandering
into the street.
According to Zillow, an
online real estate database,
erecting a fence on a property
in an area where fences are
common usually increases the
value of the home, putting it
in line with similar properties
nearby. However, this may
only be the case if the fence is
installed professionally and
matches other fences
throughout the neighbor-
hood.
Homeowners planning
to install a fence should first
secure a copy of their proper-
ty surveys. A survey of the
property is often conducted
upon purchasing a home
and/or when the land and
home is being assessed. If you
do not have a survey, you can
hire a professional to conduct
one.
The survey will be handy
because it clearly marks prop-
erty lines. Depending on the
local regulations, fences may
need to be installed a certain
number of inches or feet with-
in the property line. Your
municipality and building
code office will be able to
guide you further as to what is
legal. Reputable fencing com-
panies that work in the com-
munity should also have a
good understanding of fenc-
ing regulations.
A permit is typically
needed to install a fence.
Either your contractor or you
will need to apply for the per-
mit before construction can
begin. It is best to follow the

According to Elissa
Morgante, principal at
Morgante Wilson Architects in
Chicago, people are moving
toward much more casual and
interactive living.-This trans-
lates into making all rooms in
the home inviting and multi-
functional, to foster together-
ness in comfortable spaces that
will actually be used.
Hazard adds that practical-
ity and individuality will domi-
nate next year, with upholstery
expected to bring presence and
sophistication while still deliver-
ing all-day comfort.

UNICO National
invites residents to
attend its “Rediscover Your
Italian Heritage” event on
Sunday February 9 from
2–5pm at the Pompton
Falls Fire Dept. No. 3, 130
Jackson Avenue in
Wayne.
Celebrate the cul-
ture, traditions and histo-
ry of Italian-Americans in
a fun and festive atmos-
phere that will include
food tastings, demos, a lan-
guage lesson, entertainment
and cultural information.
Delicious homemade Italian
specialties, such as bruschetta,
mozzarella and antipasto, fol-
lowed by an array of tasty
Italian desserts, will be served
while attendees enjoy an
entertaining heritage and cul-
ture program. There will be a
special exhibit called
“Treasures from Home”: a dis-
play of mementos and col-
lectibles from Italy that were
brought to America by ances-
tors of UNICO members.
Wayne UNICO is a local
chapter of UNICO National,
the largest Italian-American
service and charitable organi-
zation in America, with over
120 local chapters in 22 states.
Founded in 1922, UNICO
National is dedicated to pro-
moting and defending Italian
heritage while supporting
charitable causes such as can-
cer research, Cooley’s anemia,
mental health, granting of
scholarships to deserving
young people and many
other causes, locally and
nationally. New members
are always welcome and
membership applications
will be available at the
event.
There is no cost to attend
this very special Italian
heritage event but a reser-
vation is required and atten-
dance is limited. The deadline
for making reservations is
February 2. To reserve your
spot or to get more informa-
tion, contact Steve

when they do need it or to pass
it on to their beneficiaries, then
read carefully. There is a better
way, not known by most finan-
cial professionals or the compa-
nies they represent, to convert
taxable IRA accounts to either
a tax-free income or a tax-free
bequest better than a Roth
IRA.
Turn your taxable IRA
into a tax-free income stream
and a tax-free bequest to your
children at the same time! I
will discuss this and demon-
strate the technique at our
workshop on Tuesday, January
28 from 1–3pm and repeated at
7–9pm. The location is 901 Rt.
23 South in Pompton Plains,
above Lakeland Bank.
On Wednesday, January
29, our workshop will discuss
strategies and techniques to
mitigate NJ estate taxes. On
Thursday, January 30 is the ses-
sion on guaranteeing your
retirement income for the rest
of your life and spouse’s life,
too. Here you will learn how to
benefit from rises in the stock
market without the risk of loss
to your monthly income.
If you plan to retire, are
already retired, hate paying
taxes or being forced to take
your minimum required distri-
bution from your IRA and pay-
ing taxes on that, you do not
want to miss this informational
workshop program. Mark your
calendars for January 28, 29
and 30 to attend this educa-
tional event. There is no cost,
no fee and no obligation. No
kidding! My only request is
that you register in advance.
Learn how to “maximize your
income today while protecting,
preserving and perpetuating
your wealth for tomorrow.”

NATIONAL CLASSIFIEDS
law so that the fence can be
installed in a manner that is
consistent with local regula-
tions and will not be subject to
potentially costly removal.
As a courtesy, speak with
your neighbors about your
fencing plans. The fence will
separate your properties from
one another, and your neigh-
bors may have certain feelings
about what they want to look
at. Even if a neighbor is not
sharing the cost, it is a good
idea to discuss fencing with
your neighbors in an effort to
reduce the likelihood of con-
flict down the road. Fences
have been points of contention
between neighbors, and you
don't want a previously amica-
ble relationship to turn sour.
In some instances, neigh-
bors will be excited about the
prospect of a fence and may
want to share the cost. Fencing
contractors may offer discounts
for multi-home installations,
so it pays to inquire with the
neighbors for that reason
alone.
Homes with pools may
need fences as a safety precau-
tion. Be sure they fit the proto-
col. They may need self-latch-
ing/locking gates to prevent
entry to the yard.
A fence can be a good
investment, but homeowners
must take the appropriate legal
measures and consider their
neighbors before erecting any
fences
