St Makarios the Great of Egypt
St Makarios the Great of Egypt is also known as St Makarios the Egyptian. He was born in the village of Shabsheer, Menuf, Egypt circa 295 to Righteous parents, Abraham and Sarah. His Father had experienced a Holy Vision of an Angel of the Lord who told him that God would grant them a son whose name would be known over all the earth, and that he would have a multitude of Spiritual Sons. In due time, according to Divine Will, their son was born and they named him “Makarios” which means “Blessed.” From earliest childhood St Makarios was obedient to his parents and to God, Whose Divine Grace was upon him, and when he reached maturity, his father wanted him to get married but he pretended to be ill for several days, after which he asked his Father to permit him to go into the wilderness to ‘recover.’ There he fervently prayed to our Lord Jesus Christ to direct him to do whatever is pleasing to Him. Then he had a Vision of one of the Holy Cherubim who took his hand and led him up to the top of a mountain where he pointed out the vast area of the desert and told St Makarios: “God has granted this desert to you and your Sons for an Inheritance.” On his return home, St Makarios was informed that his Betrothed had Reposed and he thanked the Lord. Shortly afterwards his parents also Reposed and St Makarios distributed all their worldly possessions amongst the poor, the ill and the destitute. Being so chaste and Virtuous, St Makarios was presented to the Bishop of Ashmoun who ordained him into the Holy Priesthood and when the people had built a place for him outside the city, they went to him for Confession and to receive the Holy Mysteries. St Makarios became one of the most influential Holy Desert Fathers of Egypt and was a Faithful Disciple of St Anthony the Great. The Monastery of St Makarios the Great, which is situation at Wadi Natrun, the ancient Skete, which is 92 kilometres from Cairo on the Western side of the desert road to Alexandria, was founded in 360 by St Makarios who during his lifetime became Spiritual Father to more than 4000 Monks of different Nationalities . Today we Commemorate St Makarios the Great of Egypt who Reposed in 392, together with St Makarios of Alexandria and St Makarios the Hieromartyr of Edko, Essiut, Upper Egypt. May their memories be Eternal and may they continue to Intercede with Christ our Saviour for the Salvation of our Immortal soul. http://orthodoxwiki.org/Macarius_the_Great

Blessed is the one who fears the Lord;

without deviating, Thou hast finished Thy course on earth in Ascetical Discipline; Thou has kept the Faith, and now Thou received the Crown of Righteousness, which for Thee had been prepared by Christ our God. He is the One Who distributes the awards to those who are deserving: He bestows the Honours and the Rewards. Pray that we may obtain these too, O Godbearing Makarios.

Verily, the fervid tears of Mary were not
shed in vain; for behold she was worthy to learn from the Angels, and to look at Thy Face, O Jesus. But since she was a weak human being, she still thought of earthly things. Therefore, she was prevented from touching Thee, O Christ. However she was sent to proclaim to Thy Disciples, and to tell them the Glad Tidings and of the Ascension to the Heavenly Heritage. Like her, then, make us worthy of Thine Appearance, O Lord.
