Document Analysis I 1. What type of document is it? What is the title of the document? This document is an oral history primary source document entitled Rosie the Riveter: Women Working During World War II. 2. What date was the document written? The date of the document is undisclosed, but I presume it was written in about the year 2002. 3. Who was the author of the document? The author of the document, Anna Lorraine Pantages, was a part of the Rosie the Riveter movement. She went on to become one of the many women to work the fields while the men went off to serve in the war. She was drafted as an engineer at Hendy Iron Works and at the National Motor Bearing Company. Anna Lorraine was married in 1946 to a Navy by the name of George Pantages. Her accomplishments include a family of five, providing entertainment for the troops and a certificate in Elementary Machine and Tool Design. 4. For what audience was the document written? The document was written for an educational audience. The purpose of the document is to educate those interested in what life was like for women who took over the jobs that were commonly for men after they went off to war. 5. What evidence in the document helps you know why it was written? The quote As time went on, more and more people wanted to be part of the war effort by working in one of the many companies making war related materials tells me that the theme of the article will related to a war effort in some way.

6. What three things are found in the document which tells you about life in the United States at the time it was written? -Anna describes how it felt to have to sell materials to the Japanese citizens as they were being evacuated. This says a lot about how Americans felt differently about some of the aspects of the war. Being the all-American girl, she was unsure of how to feel about the aid of helping her neighbors/friends/classmates through this transition. -was very surprised when the chief engineer approached me one day and told me that he never had much faith in women draftsmen until I came along this quote says a lot about how little women were seen as an entity in the work field. I could not imagine a comment such as this being said to a working woman now. -Anna says that she met her future husband in his familys candy store after the war was over and ten months later they were married. I think that this shows how people so easily fell in love and quickly became married during this time. Unlike now, relations and values meant something to people when they found their mate.
