Math Challenge III at Pan-Asia International School

Pan-Asia International School, Bangkok, is hosting a mathematics competition for primary grade 4-5 and secondary grade 6-8 school students in its auditorium, which will take place on Wednesday, February 12 2014, starting at 8:00 with registration. The competition called MATH CHALLENGE III aims to encourage students to study and excel in math and critical thinking. The overall objective of this competition is to improve general mathematical problem-solving skills of students. The language of the competition will be English. The competition will be open to all students from international, bilingual, English and Thai program schools. Every respected school joining the Challenge may select up to 2 teams on each grade level. Teams are formed by 3 competitors and the total score that they earn in the first round will determine the 4 winning teams to compete on stage for the final round. We hope students will walk away excited about math and thinking about how they can apply it in their future studies. For your information, Pan-Asia International School is located near the famous Rama 9 garden, just 3 km away from the new Airport Link and 10 km away from Suvarnabhumi airport. The schools curricula for core subjects (English, science, mathematics, social studies) are based on American standards and content. 1. Objectives: 1. Encourage Grade 4 Grade 8 students to strive for excellence in mathematics. 2. Improve mathematical problem-solving skills of gifted students. 3. Continued professional development efforts should be maximized to improve the skills level of current mathematics teachers. 2. How to join 4.1 Coach/trainer should choose 3 students from each grade level. Every school may join each grade level competitions with no more than 2 teams. 4.2 Fill the registration form at which will be available after January 1, 2014. 4.3 Pay the registration fee of 1000 Baht per team. The payment covers cash prizes, medals, trophies, certificates, and food (breakfast, snacks and lunch). 4.4 Payment should be made via bank transfer in favor of Pan-Asia International School. Please use the attached Bill Payment Slip, fill in your school name only. One payment for the whole school ( all teams ) will be sufficient, no need to fill the slip for every single team separately. E-mail or fax your receipt to us after payment (for confirmation). 4.5 Deadline for submission of completed forms is January 31, 2014.

5.1 Elimination round ( First Round ) - Paper + pencil test of 4 multiple choices -Teams score will be calculated by the sum of individual team members scores and 4 winning teams will be selected for each grade level to compete for the final round. 5.2 Final round - Will be held on stageas a real-time competition betweenthe 4 leading teams - 20 min is allocated for each grade level competition. - In case of a tie between the teams, there will be one tie-breaker question with specified time limits. - If there is still a tie afterwards, there will be one more tie-breaker question but this time the fastest replying team will be the winner.


6. Reminders for coaches/trainers 6.1. Prepare your contestants for the competition according to the topics attached to this letter. 6.2. Contestants should arrive at the test venue at least 30 minutes prior to the test time.

7. Reminders for students: 7.1. Arrive at the test venue 30 minutes before your test time. 7.2. Bring two (2) extra pencils and an eraser. 7.3. Bring your VALID SCHOOL ID. 7.4. Be in your SCHOOL UNIFORM for the duration ofthe competition. 7.5. Bags, food, cell-phones, PSPs, I-pads, and other electronic gadgets are not allowed inside the test room. 7.6. You may bring a pencil case and watch into the testing room. 7.7. The exam will start on time. Late-comers will be accommodated, but will not be given extra time to finish the exam. 7.8. Visits to the restroom should be done before the exam. Students will not be allowed to go out of the testing room during the contest.
