MEMO FOR THE R&COHD
17 March 1964
This or CI/SIG, carne up for information on the
Bot.kina to which was a arently sent after
he a.ttempt.ed suicide in October 1959. showed an FBI report
. dated 10 March, which referenced anothe FBI report·· dated 6 March
fltllfi!HH$11 (II3A 62724). The sequence appears to have been the foil-swing:
1. On 6 March, the FBI sent a report on their debriefing of NOOENKO
regarding the of 16 March, this report. has not. been located
in SR, although that the original was carried up to CjSR).
This mport ment:ioned that OSWALD was taken to the "Botkinskaya Hespital•.
2. At ,about that time, or short.ly after, the Agency must have sent a
query to the FBI regarding the identity of the elderly !Derican whom OSWALD
claimed he met in the hospital. The contents of this query are not known.
J. On 10 March, the FBI sent another report, referencing the 6 March
report, and indicating that thus-and-so would furnish such infor-
mation as was available to them.
Wo-...
4. CI/,PIG is now sending a report to the Commission including
the FBI report, plus the information we gave her on the S.P.Botkina Hospital
in Moscow, as gleaned from the installations director.r for 1958 and 1962,
plus the information recei-ved from a source, not identified to us, that an
(
J American Communist named GOLDEN had been hospitalized in the Botkina
Hospital in late 1959. The latter _report has also not been made available to
us. GOLDEN was about 60, and may be the "elderly
In passing, §aid that CI/piG had queried State about. the
"elde rly American" and she had heard that a negative reply had been re-
ceived, although no one seems to be able to find the repl/iy at present..

SUBJECT: Verification Entry in Lee Harvey OSWALD's
"Historic Diary"
Among 'the manuscript materials by Lee Harvey OSWALD,
made available to this Agency, is an item entitled "Historic
Diary". In an entry dated 26 October 1959, when he was
allegedly confined in an unidentified Moscow hasp ital, there is
a reference to "an elderly American".
The item in its entirety reads.:
"An elderly American at the hospital grew suspicious
about me for some reason. Because at Embassy I told
him I had not registered as most tourist and I am in
general evasive about my presence in Moscow and at
hospital.
11
It is apparent that every effort should be made to identify
the elderly Arne rican, if he existed. We have seen no reference
to this detail in any rna terials thus far made available to this
Agency on the OSWALD investigation. We asswne that the lead
is still outstanding. It is our reconunendation that the Depart-
- :'t- ..... .
ment of State urgently requests' through its channels a thor6ttg-h

going search of Embassy and Consular records in Moscow
which might reveal the identity of an elderly American
hospitalized at the end of October 1959 and possibly registered
with the Embassy as a tourist. An independent confirma-
'
tion of this detail ,.·auld be of great significance in validating
the entries in OSWALD's
11
Historical Diary" and would possibly
lead to the development of additional information on OSWALD's
stay in the USSR.

not reside. But since I did not handle these cases, I <lo not-1 could not
cite any specific ca ses.
l\lr. SLAWSON. Mr. Ambassador, I hnv<' a name of an American citiZ<>n, Mr.
William Jr., wl1o, to the records of the 11<•pa l't-
HICUt of State, was hol' pitalized in a in Moscow in the faH of J!lf.i9.
Accordinf: to records furnisbE'd us lly the Russian Government, and according
10 the personal diary kE'pt by Lee Har,·cy Oswald, he, too, was hospitalized in
t he latter part of October , and commented-Oswald comment ed in his diary-
that in his ward with him was what he clc!<Cribed as an eldt-rly Ameri C'an. Wt>
,1 t'e trying to locate that American. We think that possii.Jly this Mr. :\Iorchouse
was that persm1. I wonder if you had ever heard of :'llr. llt>fore, or
know who he might be?
Ambassador THoMPSON. I lln\e no recoll ec-tion of having heard of t.llis man
I• rfore.
1\Ir. SLAwsoN. Do you have nny r ecollection of uuy ot hl:'r AmeriC'nn that miJ,:ht
Jit t his descri ption?
Ambassador THOMPSON. :r-·o; I do recall that t here lla\·e bf:>t'll AmE' r ican t ourists
who have been in t he hospital in Moscow. Bur I don't r ecall nt that particular
dnt.e whether there were any.
Mr. SLAwsoN. l\Ir. Ambassador, can you eomment on bow Americans were
ordinarily gi>en me<JiC'nl treatment. in the Botkinskaya Hospital in Moscow, whi<'h
was the hospital in which Oswald was treatccl, to the best of your knowledge?
Ambassador 1'H0111l'SON. 'l'he Botkinskara Hospital bas a se<'tion which is n •-
f or the members of the <liploma tic corps, and in case of prominent Amer i-
particularly if the illness were serious, they were often trea tt>d there.
Mr. SLAWSOI". You say the Amerien11s normally wt>re treated in a special wnrd
i n that llospital, or a special section of i t?
Ambassador THOMPSON. Yes; it was a completely SPparate building, I llelieYe.
Mr. SLAwsoN. Was this the inYnriable method of trpatment, or would thert>
be. a r easonable chance that an Amer ican might ha,·e gone Into a norma l So1·irt
ward which would haYe treated his type of illnt>ss?
Ambassador THOMJ'SO='. I would think that t he wa rd wbicl.J was r esen·ed
for the diplomat ic <'OJ'l)S would probably only have been used for important
\'isitors, l.ml it is qnitc n large hosvital. with a number of separate build-
lt is quite posslhl e f or Americans to ll ave been in one or the otber. And
obvioui"ly, if t her e an infectious disease, thPy would be separated, and
not in t }Je regular sect ion.
l\1r. SJ.A wsoN. If an ordinary American tourist or businessman in :'lfoscow
wer e to rt-ceive an injury in. say, :111 automobile accident or some other normal
method, '"onld he normally be put into the same ward a s Embassy people wer e
placed, or would h e reeri;e treatment r ight along with normal Soviet ci tlzens?
Ambassador THOMl'SO!'>. I thinJ{ thnt there is nn emergency hospital type
where lie proL>ubly woul<l normally be taken. rather than Botkinskaya. I can-
not be sure of this. But we bad an American doctor in the Embassy who would
normally be called in on <':t1'es of this kind, and if he felt the case required it
be would probably apply to ha>ehim t.aken to Botkinskaya.
Mr. SLAWSON. Do yon recoilt>ct who this doctor was in the fall of 1959?
Ambassador THOMPSON. I believe at that time it was an Air Force officer.
It sometimes rotated among t he services. But I am almost certain i t was an
Air Force officer. I could the name, hut I don't recall it at the moment.
I just don't recall the name.
Senator Coor•E&. I suggest t hat the Secretary can supply the· name for t11e
Commission.
Mr. SLAWSON. do you think it woul(J be usual of t he
So>iet Go,·ernment to {X'rmit someone in   circumstances, t hat is a
dt>ft>ctor from his own government, to be treated in the same ward
as other Americans, or part.!cularly us Americans who migbt come undpr the
category of tbis important person or Embassy official war d you were SJwald nA"
of ?
Ambassador THOMPSON. I would think it is probably somewba t unusual.
This doctor could gh·e you expert testimony on t11is, because he has been in-
>OI>ed in almost all cases.

MEMORANDUM FOR THE RECORD
----.... .,
. SUBJECT:
\
Informal C ommumcation From
Mr. Slawson, President's
Commissiou. on the Assassination.
. of Presi.de:ct

---
1. I bad a telephone call from Mr. Slawson ot t e arren.
Commission- staff at 1000 this morning. He stated that the
State Department -had re-interviewed Mr. Snyder who had been.
stationed in the Embassy in-Moscow in 1959 during the
OSW AW incident. State .had come up w_ith what Slawson.
called ''a very fine. i.J:Jdication" or lead about the identity of .
the aged American who bad been in the next bed when OSW'ALD
. . after his abortive attempt at sW:cide. ·
z. Slawson stated .. the Secre't Service was apparently

SUBJECT: Verification of Entry in Lee Harv· ey OSWALD's
"Historic Diary"
·-..--
Among the manuscript materials by Lee Harvey OSVfALD,
made available to this Agency
1
· is an item
11
Histor ic
Diary11 • In an entry dated 26 October. 1959, when he was
allegedly confined in an unidentified Moscow there is
a reference to "an elderiy··American".
The item in· its entirety reads:
"An elderly American at the hospital grew suspicious

him I bad not registered as most tourist and I am. in

general. evasive about my presence in Moscow and at
hospital."
It is apparent that every effort should be made to identify
the elderly American. if he existed. Wf!- have seen no reference
to this detail in any rna terials thus far made available to this
Agency on the OSWALD in\-· estigation. We asswne that the lead
is still outstanding. It is our recomr.nendation that the Depa rt-

hospitalized at the e::d of October 1959 and possibly registered
with the Embassy as a tourist. An independent conf,'irma-·

the entries in OSWALD's "Historical Diary" and would posslbly
lead to the development of additional information on OS\VALD's
