WINGTIP TOYS

A senior network administrator for Wingtip Toys, a medium-sized toy manufacturing company with approximately 100 employees located in Queens, New York. The company is contemplating a migration of its network infrastructure from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008. I have been asked by the senior administrator to perform an analysis for this possible upgrade. Organizations have different reasons and requirements for upgrading or migrating their software and hardware systems. Microsoft defines and publishes a support lifecycle for each of its products. As a system Administrator I recommend upgrading to a newer product before the support lifecycle has ended. For example, CAs running on Microsoft Windows 2003 Server operating system should be upgraded to Windows Server 2008 to be current on its Certificate Authorities. The choice between whether to upgrade or migrate your environment depends on the features and role services you want to implement and the current and desired network environment that you want to create. Wingtip Toys has made the decision to upgrade their Windows 2003 servers to Windows 2008 enterprise edition to take advantage of its newest features. I will discuss the new upgrade, infrastructure, and its benefits to Wingtip toys. I will also perform a SWOT analysis to determine the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats of the upgrade. As a server administrator, I take full responsibility of implementing and managing some of the most important technology in within the organizationthe servers. Extensive monitoring and profiling tools are used to manage the network and tune systems so they perform at optimal levels. I will discuss connectivity protocols such as VPN, RRAS, file and print services, secure Internet connectivity, and centralized management of network resources. Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition designed to meet the everyday needs of networks with applications and Web services.

WINGTIP TOYS In SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis, the analyst first

looks into the business unit to identify its strengths and weaknesses. The analyst then reviews the environment in which the business unit operates and identifies opportunities presented by that environment and the threats posed by that environment. Planning the Migration of Windows server 2003 to Windows 2008 r2 The migration for Wingtip Toy will involve the following * Upgrade 4 Windows Servers to Windows 2008 r2 * Install, configure, and migrate new server roles * Configure DNS services on all servers * Configure Dynamic Host Configuration server * Install and provide VPN services for secure access to Wingtip Toys * Provide minimum Hardware and software cost for upgrade Advantages of a Client/Server Network: * Centralized - Resources and data security are controlled through the server. * Scalability - Any or all elements can be replaced individually as needs increase. * Flexibility - New technology can be easily integrated into system. * Interoperability - All components (client/network/server) work together. * Accessibility - Server can be accessed remotely and across multiple platforms (Shinder, 2008) Upgrading to Windows Server 2008 Enterprise edition Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition provides you with high levels of system uptime and the scalability to support the growth of mission-critical applications. It also provides a costeffective way to realize the benefits of virtualization. With built-in, enhanced web capabilities and included virtualization technology, Windows Server 2008 R2 is designed to increase the

WINGTIP TOYS reliability and flexibility of your server infrastructure while helping save time and reduce costs. Powerful tools give you greater control over your servers and streamline configuration and management tasks. Windows Web Server 2008 R2 Edition was designed for the purpose of internet facing web server that delivers rock solid foundation. Web Server is a power web application that features Internet Information Services 7.5 and designed exclusively as an

internet facing server. It has improved diagnostics and administrative tools to reduce the cost of infrastructure. The 2008 server allows you to manage demanding environments, from a dedicated web server. * As we become more globalized, businesses rely more and more on these types of services to become more productive and efficient. For many years Microsoft have worked on making the server environment as efficient and reliable as possible, and have improved previous versions of their server Operating System to provide us with the most current support for our ever-evolving business environment. A great example, the release of Windows Server 2008, it was developed to provide key functionality to support any size business and IT challenge. One of the most fascinating management tools within Windows server 2008 is the server manager interface that allows administrators to install, configure, and migrate the new server roles from the server manager interface. Wingtip toys will definitely be more productive with the migration to Windows server 2008 server roles and functionality from a technical and business aspect. (Pietroforte, 2009) Why Wingtip Toys should migrate to Windows Server 2008 Benefits/Advantages * Better support for the latest server hardware

WINGTIP TOYS Windows Server 2008 R2 is the first version of Windows Server to completely abandon the 32bit architecture. Along with the move to a 64-bit only architecture, Microsoft has designed Windows Server 2008 R2 to support up to 256 logical processors. Similarly, Microsoft has redesigned Hyper-V so that it can support up to 32 logical processors. The original version of Hyper-V was limited to using 16 logical processors. * Better support for the latest server hardware Windows Server 2008 R2 is the first version of Windows Server to completely abandon the 32bit architecture. Similarly, Microsoft has redesigned Hyper-V so that it can support up to 32 logical processors. The original version of Hyper-V was limited to using 16 logical processors. * Windows Server Backup Most large organizations have traditionally relied on third-party backup applications. However, many smaller organizations have been stuck using Windows Server Backup (previously known as NTBACKUP). When Microsoft released the first version of Windows Server 2008, it made the decision to completely rebuild Windows Server Backup. Unfortunately, the end result was less than stellar. In R2, Microsoft has done a lot of work to Windows Server Backup to make up for the shortcomings. * Hyper-V The one that has received the most press is a feature called Live Migration, which allows you to

move virtual machines between hosts with no downtime. A lesser known, but equally impressive new feature is the ability to add a virtual hard drive to a virtual machine without having to reboot the virtual machine.

WINGTIP TOYS The purpose of upgrading the Windows servers is to be able to perform your normal duties quicker and easier. It should save you time and money, and give your company a competitive advantage in a particular industry. If it does these things and you feel it may add value to your business, and you believe you will see a return on your investment, then you should consider upgrading, by all means. But if it seems unnecessary to you and you think what you have in place is serving its purpose, then maybe you should stay with it. (Shinder, 2008) The Disadvantages Windows server 2008 is as follows: * OSPF removed * AppleTalk protocol removed * NTBackup removed * POP3 services removed * NNTP removed * Post Office Protocol removed The above six entities over earlier versions of Windows Server software were removed from Windows Server 2008. They can be seen as six disadvantages to some individuals depending on how they were going to use the new edition of Windows Server 2008. Providing secure network access to Wingtip toys to employees in satellite offices WANs are usually built through leased lines and routers and are used to connect the network at one place to the network at another location. For example, a company has a network in Queen,

New York, and wants to open its satellite office in USA. In order to connect the two locations we have to install routers at both ends for communication or create a cloud connection from an Internet service provider. Wingtip Toys has decided to lease dedicated T1 lines from their satellite office to the main Branch in Queens, New York. Wingtip Toys will have unprecedented

WINGTIP TOYS benefits from the WAN connection by sitting in one city sharing the resources of the network in another city. The users can use online software for communication and can work at the same time on the server database. The benefits are unlimited and it is up to the organization to what extent they need it for. The type of WAN used depends on the nature of network. For example, there are100 computers in the LAN infrastructure and all computers belong to the same site. We want to send data between sites. So, one method is to lease transmission lines from the public carriers. We will also to install a private switching system at each site. One of the advantages of a WAN is that we can use it to connect computers distributed over a large area. (Stallings, 2001) Disadvantages of a WAN: Are expensive and generally slow Need a good firewall to restrict outsiders from entering and disrupting the network Wingtip toys will need additional security to ensure protection of their data and resources so as an administrator I will install and configure RRAS and VPN server role to allow secure remote access users the ability to connect to the network. (Mitchell, 2012). Installing DNS Server role on Wingtip Toys Domain Controllers DNS services will be installed on all servers to map host names to an IP address. For network devices such as computers and printers to communicate over the internet or within the Wingtip Toys organization, they must be able to locate one another by mapping host name to IP address. In a Windows 2008 network, the primary means of locating network devices and network services is through the use of Domain Name Systems, or DNS. In order for computers, printers, and even routers to communicate over a TCP/IP network, DNS services must be installed. DNS enables the name resolution workload to be shared among many computers. Most

WINGTIP TOYS internetworking software, such as electronic mail programs and Web browsers use DNS for name resolution. The Wingtip infrastructure will consist of a primary DNS zone and two secondary DNS zones so the collection of host name-to-IP address or adding resources can transfer records effectively. The primary DNS server will be configured as the forwarder DNS for external DNS servers outside of Wingtip network. (Pietroforte, 2009) Virtual Private Network A virtual private network (VPN) is a network that uses a public telecommunication infrastructure such as the Internet, to provide remote offices or individual users with secure access to their organization's network. VPN can be contrasted with an expensive system of

owned or leased lines that can only be used by one organization. The goal of a VPN is to provide the organization with the same capabilities, but at a much lower cost (Search Enterprise WAN,2009) A VPN works by using the shared public infrastructure while maintaining privacy through security procedures and tunneling protocols such as the Layer Two Tunneling Protocol (L2TP). In effect the protocols, by encrypting data at the sending end and decrypting it at the receiving end, data is sent through a "tunnel" that cannot be "entered" by data that is not properly encrypted. An additional level of security involves encrypting not only the data, but also the originating and receiving network address. Compared to other technologies, VPN offers great advantages, especially for wireless clients. Advantages of a VPN

WINGTIP TOYS * A VPN offers two main advantages over alternative technologies: cost savings, and network scalability. To the clients accessing these networks, VPNs also bring some benefits of ease of use. * With a VPN, you use public network infrastructure including the Internet to make these connections and tap into that virtual network through much cheaper local leased lines or even just broadband connections to a nearby Internet Service Provider (ISP). Wingtip employees will

enjoy the benefits of VPN. Once the VPN connection is established, remote user can use Remote desktop to connect directly to their office computer. * VPNs require detailed understanding of network security issues and careful installation /configuration to ensure sufficient protection on a public network like the Internet. * Historically, VPN products and solutions from different vendors have not always been compatible due to issues with VPN technology standards. Attempting to mix and match equipment may cause technical problems, and using equipment from one provider may not give as great a cost savings (Pietroforte, 2009) Cost of Migrating Before you upgrade the server, you need to make sure that the computer meets the minimal CPU, and memory requirements for the server and database elements. You also need to check if there is enough disk space for the upgrade. Next, make sure that you use one of the supported operating systems and all the prerequisite software is installed. Below are the recommended system requirements for installing Windows Server 2008. Needed hardware: Microsoft recommends that any Server which one is looking to upgrade to Server 2008 have some recommended requirements. Processor: Recommended 2 GHz or faster

Memory: Recommended 2 GB of RAM or Greater. Maximum (32-bit systems): 4 GB (Standard) or 64 GB (Enterprise and Datacenter). Maximum (64-bit systems): 32 GB (Standard) or 1 TB (Enterprise and Datacenter) or 2 TB. Available Disk Space: Recommended 40 GB or greater. Computers with more than 16 GB of RAM will require more disk space for paging, hibernation, and dump files. You can use Backup to back up and restore both Windows Server 2003 and Exchange 2003 data. The backup utility (Backup) in Windows Server 2003 is similar to earlier versions of the utility. Backup helps you to back up directories, selected files, and System State data, including Windows Server 2003 operating system registry information. You can also use Backup remotely over the network to back up Exchange databases and information about other computers. Use Backup to preserve all the critical data in your Exchange organization. The following topics give you the general information you need to configure and create backups using the backup utility (Backup) in Windows Server 2003.
