Governor Cuomo supports New Yorks Wine Industry

2 NYWIA President Scott Osborn received a thank you letter from Governor Andrew Cuomo for NYWIAs efforts and interest in promoting New Yorks wine industry. Says Scott Osborn, NYWIA appreciates the initiatives Governor Cuomo has taken to promote our industry. These include featuring New York produced wines at Taste NY events, which included the Adirondack Challenge and the PGA Championship in Rochester. Following the 2012 New York State Fair, NYWIA undertook a grassroots effort to have New York produced wines featured in the fairs Empire Room. Governor Cuomo agreed and took swift action to see that New York wines were offered at the 2013 Great New York State Fair in Syracuse. NYWIA will continue its grassroots activities to promote and expand markets for our industry.

New York vintners launch European business venture

Creation of the first-ever Finger Lakes European importing company took place last October when John Martini, Chris Missick and Scott Osborn ventured to Europe to meet with Luxembourg-based business partner Christian Claessens. The company will import and distribute wines in the European market from the vintners respective wineries Anthony Road, Villa Bellangelo and Fox Run. Initial focus will be in Belgium and Luxembourg, with plans to expand in subsequent years. The ventures launch took place at the international wine exposition, Megavino 2013. Featured wines were well received and partnerships are being developed with local distributors and retailers.

Wine Symposium of the Finger LakesJune 13 & 14

Following last years inaugural event, this years will kick off on Friday with a Grand Tasting at the newly built, waterfront visitor center on the shore of Seneca Lake in downtown Geneva. The Grand Tasting, sponsored by Waterloo Container & Constellation Brands, will feature wine from the Riesling competition and the announcement of the winners. The competition is open to all Finger Lakes wineries currently producing a Riesling. Wines will be judged by class, from dry all the way to dessert. Friday evening will bring a host of wine and local cuisine pairings throughout the Geneva area. Stimulating Seminars Saturday will usher in a full day of stimulating seminars, including cool climate red, white & sparkling wines as well as seminars on the basics of food & wine pairing. Saturdays luncheon features acclaimed chefs preparing five tempting courses while attendees are entertained and enlightened by keynote speaker Joshua Greene. Mr. Greene, a giant in the world of wine journalism, is editor of Wine & Spirits magazine. You Can Share in the Excitement

2nd annual event is collaborative effort of Geneva Growth & Finger Lakes Wine Alliance with support from NY Wine & Culinary Center, Hobart & William Smith Colleges and City of Geneva By Chris Missick

With more than 80 entries in 2013, many of the Finger Lakes finest Rieslings contended for the top honors. This year, we would like to include many of the additional reserve and single vineyard bottling from Finger Lakes producers as well as dessert wines. Sponsorships Sought The Symposium is seeking additional sponsorships ranging from $250 to $10,000. Each level of sponsorship brings with it varying degrees of publicity and benefits. Last but not least, encourage your customers to attend the Grand Tasting on June 13, & the Symposium on June 14. Dont wait! Last years Symposium was sold out and we expect the same this year. A Moment with NYS Senate Agriculture Committee Chair, Patty Ritchie

By Tina Hazlitt
In August, I represented NYWIA at a fund raiser for Senator Richie held at the home of former Congressional candidate Matt Dohney in the Thousand Islands. My mission was to gain support for the NY Wine Pledge begun by Senator Tom OMara (see article below). I was disappointed that there were no New York wines served at the fund raiser. I had the opportunity to have a personal conversation with the Senator, where I expressed the need for elected officials to support New York wines, by serving them at their public and professional events. While I understood that she did not have authority over what wines were served by the event hosts, we discussed the opportunities for her staff to request that New York wines be served in the future. She agreed. We were seeing eye to eye! NYWIA continues to work to have New York wines served by our states elected officials at all events where wine is served. Many legislators have already signed a pledge to do so, while others have sent letters of support.

NYWIA in Action at New York Ag Societys Annual Forum

Syracuse, NYIts fair to say that the NYWIA display drew the most visitors at the New York State Agricultural Society's Annual Forum in January. Laure Missick, Evan Miles and Susan Hayes poured tastes of New York wines for attendees and dozens of Agricultural Society members signed a post card that was sent to their individual State Assembly Members and Senators asking them to take "A Pledge to Support New York Wineries" by serving New York wines at their official, public functions. NYWIA is championing a grassroots effort in the second stage of this project, following on the heels of State Senator Thomas O'Mara's initial mailing to colleagues last year.
