Case Study: T-Shirts Order Database

Background
Rachael is a local artist who has years of experience in the textile industry. Her children attend the local university, and they sometimes ask her to design and print custom t-shirt for their university organisations, such as clubs or sport teams. Friends of Rachaels children have always complimented them on the custom shirts, and have requested some of their own. Rachael has decided to go into business printing custom apparel and selling it to organisations at the local university. Her forecasts indicate that her first-year sales will be quite high, so she will be very busy generating all the products for the orders. As a consequence, she needs a team of database administrators who can help her to develop a database that can effectively handle (e.g. arrange, track, store, and etc.) the orders that come into the shop.

Part 1 (10%):
Topics: Creating Tables Table Properties Table Relationship Creating Form and Subform Form Properties and Controls Assume that, you and your team have been hired to assist Rachael in managing the shops orders. Rachael hands you a partially completed T-Shirt Order database called tShirt.accdb1 for your further development of the database. The current T-Shirt Order database contains Customers, Orders and Order Line Item tables. After a discussion with your team members, the team decides to develop the database by completing the following tasks:

Task 1 Create a table and name it as tblProducts. The purpose of creating this table is to record the product details, which includes Product ID, Product Description, and Price. Fields for Products table: Field Name Product ID Product Description Price
1

Data Type Text Text Currency

Special Requirements Primary Key, 5 characters 25 characters -

The file name of the database will be different as stated above. It will be named according to your tutorial section, e.g. tShirt_BM101A.accdb, tShirt_MM224.accdb, and etc.

Task 2 Enter the following information into the Products table:

Product ID 101 102 103 104 105 106 107 Product Description T-shirt T-shirt, long-sleeve Fleece Pullover Fleece Jacket Hoodie Baseball Cap Fleece Hat Price $12.50 $21.00 $29.50 $35.00 $29.00 $7.75 $10.25

Task 3
To ensure that all the customers phone numbers are in the correct format , apply a suitable input mask for the customers phone number field.

Task 4 Create relationships among the FOUR (4) tables. Note: In order to ensure that the relationships between records in related tables are valid, referential integrity has to be enforced. Task 5 Rachael found difficulty to add, remove, and modify the data using Products and Customers tables. Develop forms for products and customers in assisting Rachael to manage the data. You are to design user-friendly interfaces for the forms so that Rachael will have no problem using it. Task 6 Rachael wants to update data in the Orders and Order Line Item tables by using a form which is named as Orders form. The Orders form should allow the user to add, remove, and modify the records. The Orders form captures the customers order (e.g. order number, date ordered, and customer id) with its total quantity and also detailed information about each order that the shop receives (e.g. product id, size, color, quantity and the inscription). Note: i) Since two (2) tables are involved, hence, a subform is required. All the detailed information about any orders the shop receives will be displayed in the subform.

ii) You will have to use a calculated field on the subform to sum the quantity of each order and then reference the subform field on the main form. iii) When designing forms, attention must be given to the forms functionality, navigation and layout.

Use proper naming convention when naming database objects. 2. Database documentation (softcopy only required!) should include: i) The database relationships window screen capture. You are to describe the relationship type between the tables. ii) Provide instructions for using the database objects i.e. tables and forms. You should explain how to use the tables or forms and NOT how to create them! For example, in the form that you have designed, you should explain the functionality of the command buttons that you have added.
