Single RAN for WiMAX Evolution

Using Software Defined Radio
Introduction
WiMAX is a mature standard, network and ecosystem, currently experiencing a significant surge of growth as global data demand explodes. As WiMAX networks transition from coverage sites to capacity sites, WiMAX technology is also evolving to meet the rising need for mobile communication. This paper briefly highlights use of the Single RAN solution in WiMAX evolution. It also gives the details of how Software Defined Radio (SDR) enables the Single RAN Solution resulting in up to 100% reuse of network investments. means that network evolution can typically be a process of reprogramming, rather than replacing, costly hardware. All Motorola 4G base stations are based on SDR. Motorola has shipped commercial SDR base stations since 2001 and the use of SDR has resulted in 70 to 100% reusability of base station elements as technology advances.

Single RAN and Use of SDR

The Single Radio Access Network, or Single RAN, implies using a common product platform to support multiple radio technologies. Motorola has deployed a number of Single RAN solutions and our field experience results have demonstrated significant cost benefits for the operator. A Single RAN solution achieved by using SDR can be leveraged for: Redefining the base station from one radio technology to another Deploying multiple radio technologies in one base station simultaneously The benefit of redefining base station from one radio technology to another for example, from pre-WiMAX to WiMAX helped WiMAX operators in capturing early broadband subscribers and getting field experience of wireless broadband solutions. All of this was attained by reusing 100% of the base station. There was no need to acquire new sites,

Use of SDR in WiMAX

Software Defined Radio is radio technology implementation using software. SDR is the centerpiece in the development of multi-band, flexible and smart base stations that can costeffectively evolve as the technology advances. There are two key components in a WiMAX base station. The first is the radio frequency component, which is RF-band specific and is independent of the radio technology component. It is agnostic to technology. The second, the radio technology component, is the modem, which is typically implemented using programmable parts such as digital signal processor (DSP) or field-programmable gate array (FPGA). The modem is frequency agnostic. SDR implementation, together with the respective transparencies of these base station components,

new towers, new batteries, new ancillaries and new backhaul. It also did not require tower climbing or costly installation services. Deploying multiple radio technologies in one base station at the same time for example, using CDMA and LTE at the same time has been a valuable subscriber retention tool. Using the same base station, newer technology has been introduced to an existing large base of subscribers, allowing subscribers to transition as the older technology is phased out. The use of Single RAN enables reuse and removes the need for costly services such as the installation of new sites, base stations, towers, batteries, backhaul and ancillaries. Perhaps most important to operators who have made significant investments in their infrastructure, a Single RAN solution using SDR means up to 100% of the network elements can be reused. For example, a wireless broadband network requires a costly IP/MPLS core; that core can be reused 100% when migrating from one technology to another or when using multiple wireless technologies. The use of Single RAN makes the transition smoother with common device management that uses standard interface such as TR069 and OMA-DM, network management, performance management, DNS, DHCP and other network elements.
