Trinity United Church of Christ

uring the month of February, as the nation celebrates Black History Month, Trinity UCC takes this time to inform, educate and . . . remember, the Maafa. Derived from the Swahili work for “disaster, terrible occurrence or great tragedy, “ Maafa was first introduced into the African American lexicon by Mirimba Ani’s book Let the Circle Be Unbroken: The Implications of African Spirituality in the Diaspora. Some academics, Maulana Karenga among them, prefer the term “African Holocaust” to describe the horrible circumstance of the African slave trade because of the implications of intention, others favor Maafa, because it speaks to the “continual, constant, complete, and total system of human negation and nullification” inflicted on Africans and Africans in diaspora. • • • During the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, 90% of those enslaved were sent to the Caribbean or South America The Trans-Atlantic slave trade reduced the population of men in Africa by about 20% Studies and analyses typically state that around 13 million slaves were shipped from Africa and around 11 million arrived at ports throughout the Americans and Caribbean, but . . . While those numbers indicated 2 million died in transit, that number is woefully low: o “As many as 8 million Africans may have died, in order to bring 4 million slaves to the Caribbean islands.” (Jan Rogozinski, A Brief History of the Caribbean) o David Stannard, in American Holocaust, estimates that 30 to 60 million Africans died while being enslaved o Frederic Wertham clams that 150 million Africans died as a result of the slave trade What does this death, disruption, and depopulation mean to Africa? The stripping of product labor, of intellectual capacity and cohesive societies combined with colonialism to stifle potential and created many of the structural challenges African continues to struggle with today! *NOTE: An excellent source of information, www.africanholocaust.net.

Genesis 2:10-14 (NRSV)
A river flows out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it divides and becomes four branches. 11The name of the first is Pishon; it is the one that flows around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold; 12and the gold of that land is good; bdellium and onyx stone are there. 13The name of the second river is Gihon; it is the one that flows around the whole land of Cush. 14The name of the third river is Tigris, which flows east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.

ORDER OF WORSHIP/UNISON SCRIPTURE

Songs
OPENING SONG
MO GBEGA/BABA
(Yoruba Chant)

Confession of Sins

I lift Him up, the God of a very great house; I lift You up, the God of all creation; I lift You, Father God, I thank You.

Almighty and Most Merciful Father, we come before You, acknowledging our sins, our shortcomings, and our breaking of our Covenant with You. Not only have we done things we ought not to have done, said things we ought not to have said, left undone so many things we ought to have done and been silent when we should have witnessed for You. Not only are we guilty of that, O Lord; but we have also closed our eyes and pretended not to see the injustices, the racism and the evil which pervade our everyday lives. We have shut our ears and pretended not to hear the cries for liberation which come from the lips, lives and hearts of the oppressed – even our own Black brothers and sisters! Forgive us, O Lord, renew our courage and faith, and keep us ever mindful of Thy great sacrifice. Hear us, we beseech Thee, as we come to You in love and worship giving Your Name the praise forevermore. ****** To All Our Visitors ... To all who mourn and need comforting ... To all who are friendless and want friendship ... To all who are oppressed and need liberation; and to whosoever will come, Trinity opens its doors. Thank you for coming, and may God bless you.

HYMN OF PRAISE

EASY TIPS TO SAVE MONEY AND KEEP WARM THIS WINTER

Perform regular maintenance. If you have a forced air furnace, make sure to clean or change the furnace filter about once a month. Most furnaces will need to be professionally cleaned and tuned once a year. Protect your pipes by letting the faucets drip, even at a trickle, in order to prevent them from freezing. Also, keep cabinet doors open near pipes to allow warm air to circulate around them. Keep emergency supplies in your vehicle, including blankets, jumper cables, windshield wiper fluid, water, snacks and a flashlight with extra batteries. REDUCE~REUSE~RECYCLE

2014 Trinity UCC Theme “Loving God, Living Green, Liberating All”
July • Job 38:4-7 (NIV)
Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundations? Tell me if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? On what were its footings set or who laid its cornerstone while the morning stars sang together for joy!

LOVING GOD
January • Deuteronomy 6:5 (NIV)
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

August • Deuteronomy 24:19 (NIV)

February • Psalm 119:105-106 (NIV)

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. I have taken an oath and confirmed it, that I will follow your righteous laws.

March • John 15:10 (NIV)

If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love.

LIBERATING ALL
September • Galatians 5:1 (NIV)
It is for freedom that Christ set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

April • Romans 14:19 (NIV)

Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification.

October • Galatians 5:13 (NIV)

LIVING GREEN
May • Psalm 24:1 (NIV)
The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.

You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in Love.

November • Galatians 3:28 (NIV)

June • Genesis 1:29-30 (NIV)

There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so.

December • Luke 4:18-19 (NIV)

The spirit of the Lord is on me, because he anointed me to preach good news to the poor, he has sent me to proclaim freedom for the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.
