Sago Mine Safety Grant
administered by the Depart-

and Health Administration.
U.S. Sen. Roland Burris (D-

ment today that RLC will
receive $50,000 toward the
reestablishment of its mining
technology program. A ma-
jority of the funding will be
used by RLC for curriculum
development to train 160
miners in mine rescue skills.

Casey Middle School teacher Dustin Benscoter demonstrates his classroom SMART
board. District 80 is completing the installation of the interactive whiteboards
that use touch technology to detect user input in all of its classrooms within the
next two weeks. The system is comprised of the whiteboard, a computer, and a
projector. SMART boards have many practical uses in the classroom, beginning
with students as young as preschool age. According to Wikepedia, “Teachers can
create unique interactive sound-enhanced lessons and link websites, PowerPoint
presentations and Excel spreadsheets to the notebook software. Documents can
also be scanned into slides to help create curriculum based material. The images
and flash graphics in the “Gallery” are added features that help to create a 21st
Century environment within the classroom. The SMART board has become a new
methodology for teachers to engage students in traditional educational content.”
Benscoter said that his students noticed immediately how excited he is to have
the SMART board technology to integrate into their classroom lessons.

During a recent Mt. Vernon Prayer Break-
fast meeting, Cindy Winters presents
a riveting story and testimony as she
reflected on the shocking death of her
husband, Pastor Fred Winters, who was
gunned down in the pulpit at First Baptist
Church of Maryville in March. Over 500
people attended the Prayer Breakfast at
the Mt.Vernon Holiday Inn. You can view

Steve Fee and the band FEE, played to about 2,000 people during Godstock 2009 recently at the Wayne County Fairgrounds in
Fairfield. Fee has placed several Christian hits on the Contemporary Charts including “All Because of Jesus” which reached #2 in
the nation. Other acts at Godstock included Sonicflood, John Schlitt, VOTA, The Great Romance, Perry Case Band, Greg Graham
Band, and Awaken. The “Center Stage” singing contest at Godstock was won by Jared Mitchell of Norris City.

Rend Lake Runner Makes Impact On & Off The Track

The 19-year-old freshman
running phenom at RLC
– by way of Cedar Rapids,
Iowa and via Burundi,
Africa – came onto campus
in August. Already, he has
won the heart of at least one
big fan and it wasn’t because
of anything he did in his
running shoes. Last month,
the long-distance talent came
across a misplaced wallet
nestled in the bleachers at the
RLC soccer field on campus.
The wallet, belonging to
freshman soccer defender
Jared Rosine of Mattoon,
contained more than $1,100
in cash. Manirumva did not
hesitate.
“I didn’t see how much

soccer field and I just gave it
to the campus police.”

damaged the Church.”
Convinced America was not
built on Christian principals
he stated “The US Senate
ratified the Treaty of
Tripoli in 1796 and John

You can scour the Constitu-
tion of the United States,
and you will NOT find
the phrase, “separation of
church and state” or any-
thing close to it. However,

Soviet Union, the doctrine
of the separation of Church
and State is found: “In or-
der to ensure to citizens
freedom of conscience,
the church in the
U.S.S.R. Is separated
from the State, and the
school from the church.
Freedom of religious
worship and freedom
of antireligious propa-
ganda is recognized for
all citizens” (Article
124). Article Twelve of
the 1918 Soviet Con-
stitution decrees that
no church or religious
organization “shall en-
joy the rights of judicial
person.” Instruction of
Pastor Ferris
children under age 18
in religious matters,
whether in public or
private, is against the
law.
The concept of sepa-
ration of church and
state might be implied by
the First Amendment
which states that “Con-
gress shall make no law
respecting an establish-
ment of religion, or
prohibiting the free ex-
ercise thereof....” It says
nothing about the “separa-
tion of church and state.”
And, even if you accept the
principle of the separation
of church and state being
implied by the First Amend-
ment, its implication is not
there to protect Americans
from religion, it is there to
protect religious Americans
from the government.
The facts nonetheless
reveal the true convictions
of our founders. Without
question, they believed that
although no one Chris-
tian denomination should
dominate the nation, the
principles of the Bible and
Christianity should underlie
our government and Ameri-
can education as well.
