The club founder, Hall Thompson, was against having African American members at his club, which spurred many issues. Shoal Creek hosted a major championship, the PGA championship. That

year of hosting the tournament, the club lost sponsors and became under distress from public outrage. After this incident at Shoal Creek, the PGA Tour released a policy that all clubs that had a PGA Tour event at must allow for African American members. The one club that didn't was Augusta National, which created problems with everyone. Augusta eventually had to admit an African American member in secrecy to get the public off their back. Virginia Rommety became the new CEO of IBM and was the first woman CEO of IBM. The past four CEOs had all been invited to Augusta National and everyone was wondering if Augusta National would let in their first women member by letting in Rommety. They had not let women into their club in the past and had no feelings of changing this policy any time soon. Since not asking Rommety to become a member, the public and IBM became furious because Augusta National was not letting in a person that would of normally became a member just because she was a woman. Since many people were becoming upset with Augusta National, and increased public outrage on its sexist values. This helped gained women's rights at Augusta National, but Rommety still has not been asked to become a member.
