Improv Etudes

The “Improv Etudes” are used to help the student to develop his/her “Linear
Improvisation” skills and his/her technique.

The “Improv Etudes” in most cases are composed of all eight-notes without any rests.
The purpose of that in the primary case is to avoid the possibility of the student to simply
memorize the etude and then perform it on stage. That is not improvisation and not
creative.

It is more important to keep the timing by the etudes. Since one does have to breathe,
one should leave out notes but keep the tempo and timing.

It is also encourages to transpose these etudes into other keys, preferably the “harder”
ones, in order to aid the student to be able to “hear into” the foreign key better.

The following are examples of a “Rhythm Changes” Improv Etude. Start off at a slow
tempo and eventually increase the speed. If you have play-along rhythm tracks, use
them.

If you enjoy these and like to get more, you can go to www.evantate.com/shop.php and
purchase either my “250 Jazz Patterns” or “Blues & Rhythm Changes in All Keys”
books.

Purchase both books in either electronic of printed form for a special price at:

Have fun!
