BYE BYE BIRDY Dong Nguyen, the creator of the mobile game Flappy Bird, has removed the game from Google Play and the iTunes App Store, but not over legal concerns. “I am sorry ‘Flappy Bird’ users, 22 hours from now, I will take ‘Flappy Bird’ down. I cannot take this anymore,” said Nguyen on Twitter yesterday. “It is not anything related to legal issues. I just cannot keep it anymore.” Flappy Bird released last year, and has gotten a lot of media coverage in recent months for its brutally difficult yet addictive gameplay. Earlier this month, Nguyen told The Verge that the free game was earning an average of $50,000 in ad revenue per day.

FILM OF THE WEEK

THU 13 FEB

BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOUR Based on the graphic novel of the same name, this French romantic-drama is a complex and compelling coming-of-age story. We are introduced to young Adele (played by stunning French beauty Adèle Exarchopoulos), who’s like any other teen – kissing boys and gossiping with her friends about said boys. But on seeing a gorgeous bluehaired woman (Léa Seydoux as Emma) in the street, she begins to question what she knows and finds herself instantly smitten with this stranger. On a second chance encounter, the pair begin a relationship (much to the heckling and misunderstanding of her friends) and grow together through both good and bad times to adulthood. At three-hours long, it takes some great patience to sit through any film of this length, let alone in a foreign language. But if you see one art house/international film this year, make it this one.

There’s a reason Cannes loved it. Aside from a rather graphic and extended sex scene, which has come under fire as borderline pornographic, there’s more to this story than “hot chicks making out”. If you’re after that kind of thing, there are plenty of websites out there. This is a female-centric story of understanding your own sexuality and developing from a young girl to an adult, filled with all the mistakes and misadventures that make us who we are. Lesbian, bisexual or heterosexual, there’s something all women will be able to relate to when it comes to discovering who we are and what kind of life we want to live.

Following the sell-out concerts last year, Opera Brava have put together a new programme of opera highlights for your enjoyment. This year, the programme will include, ‘Un bel di’ (one fine day), ‘Casta Diva’, the Pearlfishers duet, the Butterfly flower duet, among many other wonderful hits. Enjoy a summer evening under the stars.

It’s not the Disney tale, with all the singing and dancing and colours of the wind. PocaHAUNTus explores how truth is relative, by taking on the truths, or stories, of what we often see as opposites: indigenous and “civilized”, natural and commercial/industrial, sane and crazy. The one-actor show sees our lead switch between the many people in the stories.

Robin Morrison (1944-1993) was one of New Zealand’s most celebrated photojournalists. His striking, unpretentious images allowed us to see ourselves, and our way of life, as if for the first time. This exhibition features a selection of Robin’s black and white photographs of his city, Auckland, from 1971 to 1985.A beautiful window to the past.

Who’s in the dead supergroup for your dream hologram show? Holograms? No thanks. I got the records, they’ll do fine. What’s an upcoming film you’re jazzed about? Inside Llewyn Davis . It’s like they had a meeting to figure out a way to make me buy a Cheap Tuesday ticket. Well played, Coens. Where can your stalkers find you during the weekend? Online, tweeting about how much I’d rather be drinking whisky or should be reading a book. What happens when you mix Coca Cola with Pepsi? War. Your signature “I’m an amazing cook” dish is… Vegetarian Lasagne a la Better Than Yours. The best TV show around at the moment is… I’m amazed at the longevity and creativity of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The best place for a date night is… Venus. Imagine that! (Then I do a helicopter noise like Rhys Darby). You’d get arrested if the police knew that you… Didn’t like that show Girls. People say you look like… Jonathan Taylor Thomas. Five celebs on your f**klist? Oh yeah, like anyone could ever sex up five different people. Kittens or puppies? Kittens for pelts, puppies for meat. What generic current affair has your blood boiled? This milquetoast Prime Minister’s tepid anti-statements are pretty infuriating. The man has no moral compass. Vote the nitwit out.

ALBUM OF THE WEEK

BROKEN BELLS
AFTER THE DISCO

though they’re competing. ‘The Angel And The Fool’ is the most emotional and evoking track (and that’s saying something on a record that will have ripples moving through your heart. Both because of the lyrics, delivery and production). It’s slow and vocally oriented. The lyrics are vivid and especially expressive and it brings a fantastic contrast to the more grandiose ‘The Remains Of Rock and Roll’. Bathing in synths the album closer brings the tracks together. It has more of the vocal style of opener ‘Perfect World’ and a touch of the sensitivity of ‘The Angel And The Fool’. Not an imitation of tracks before it but a perfectly positioned closer that reiterates everything there is to love about After The Disco (and there’s a lot to love). Brilliant.
SEBASTIAN MACKAY

Melodic, enchanting, meaningful, thought provoking, relatable. After The Disco is refreshing and very well put together. It’s also a lot of fun to listen to. The beat drives ‘The Changing Light’ but it’s nothing without the vocal melodies that come in with the chorus and give the song a completely different feeling to the verses in the song. It’s the type of album that grows on you. ‘Control’ comes in offering more of an upbeat and sing along chorus. It’s as though it’s built on the merits of its predecessor and is more infectious and is booty shake evoking. It’s not a better track, but it exemplifies the album’s diversity. It’s an album that will have you moving in one moment and connecting with it in the next. The electronic/instrumental combination is flawless and the elements (a driving beat or atmosphere or synth paired with a bass or acoustic guitar) work ceaselessly to compliment each other and never feel as

ASSASSIN’S CREED IV: FREEDOM CRY RELEASING SEPARATELY Freedom Cry, the first story DLC pack for Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, will release as a standalone game for PC, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4 next week. Freedom Cry puts players in the shoes of Adewale, a former slave turned pirate assassin, as he fights against slavery in 18th Century Haiti. It released as an add-on for Assassin’s Creed IV last December. The standalone version releases on February 18 for PlayStation consoles, and February 25 for PC. It will have a US$15 price tag in North America, but no local pricing has been revealed.

DARK SOULS II
PS3, 360, PC

“You died.” If you’ve ever played Dark Souls, that’s a phrase you will be intimately familiar with - by design, it’s a brutal and unforgiving game. However, the difficulty is carefully crafted, the kind where every death is a learning experience that keeps you coming back for more. When you die in Dark Souls, you curse yourself for the mistakes you made, not the game for being unfair. Rather than going the direction that many sequels do and trying to innovate or create a new, unique experience, Dark Souls II is essentially a bigger Dark Souls with a new plot and some minor mechanical tweaks. The core experience is near identical, so you can take it as a given that if you liked the first game, you’ll like this one. As an action RPG, combat is front and centre in Dark Souls II. It’s essentially the same as in the first game, a slow paced but deeply tactical affair where knowing and predicting enemy movements is paramount and mistakes come with a heavy cost. Changes to the formula are few: backstabs are no longer invincible, and you can equip three weapons per hand for on-the-fly switching instead of two. There’s also a new petrify status effect, though I didn’t get to see it in action. Perhaps the most significant change is not to directly to do with combat itself, but the consequences for failure: each fall now comes with a 5% penalty on your max HP. Repeated deaths will see your health bar shrinking further and further, but luckily it can’t drop lower than 50%. You can recover your lost health, of course, but the items to do so are few and far between. At some point in the game they become available for purchase, but I ran into a seemingly insurmountable obstacle before I had access to any vendor, let alone one selling the consumable in question. Dark Souls II is looking like a game that knows why its predecessor worked and runs with that, instead of trying to reinvent the franchise. The tweaks are there, but ultimately, it’s a revisit to Dark Souls, and even harder this time around something tells me that’s just what fans want.

METAL GEAR SOLID V: GROUND ZEROES LESS THAN TWO HOURS LONG The main storyline in Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, the prologue to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, is less than two hours long, according to the latest print edition of Game Informer magazine. The March issue of Game Informer has an exclusive preview of the game, which releases next month, and got to play a near-final build. “Judged just by the core story mission, Ground Zeroes is short,” says the article. “We completed it in just less than two hours.” That doesn’t include side missions or previously-announced console-exclusive missions. Hideo Kojima, director of Metal Gear Solid V, created Ground Zeroes to give fans something to play while waiting for The Phantom Pain, while also helping veterans of the franchise to adjust to the new, open-world gameplay that will be present in the latter title. It releases on March 20, and will retail for $79.99 for currentgen versions and $69.99 for last-gen.

WHAT IS MUSIC? For many years there was an annual Australian festival called What Is Music? Its performers set about answering that question in their own eccentric ways, mostly by stretching the average listener’s perception of what they were willing to think of as music. In New Zealand, that festival’s spinoff, the Alt-Music Festival, asked the same question, as does the Aucklandbased improvising music collective, Vitamin S. 1:22 PM Vitamin S holds a weekly get-together in a rundown bar in Karangahape Rd, where musicians are welcome to just turn up with their instrument, and improvise with whomever else turns up that week. The only rule is that no pre-ordained songs are performed. When virtuoso guitarist Nigel Gavin played at Vitamin S, he was flung right out of his comfort zone. “I did one night performing with a guy who was playing four digital alarm clocks – that was his instrument,” he told me. “And another time, a guy was playing an oldfashioned typewriter. The first time I played there, a guy was playing percussion with a weed eater and saws, and another guy was miking up spinning musical tops. I was staring at the guitar feeling way overdressed!

But you need to step out of your comfort zone to play something new… pure spontaneity!” So-called experimental musicians are constantly tearing away at the boundaries, testing our perceptions, and just as well: were it not for thinking outside the square, even the history of pop, rock, hip hop and heavy metal may have stalled back in the dark ages. Imagine if The Beatles had never evolved from safe, naïve boy-band tunes like ‘I Want To Hold Your Hand’? If Paul McCartney hadn’t been turned onto experimental electronic music, and John Lennon hadn’t discovered a world of avant-garde art, then the world may never have been blessed with a record that often wins Best Record Ever Made awards, Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Behind many of the greatest pop and rock moments is an avantgarde idea: think of Brian Eno and Robert Fripp’s amazing audio canvasses on David Bowie’s ‘Berlin trilogy’ of Low, Heroes and Lodger, or the way that Radiohead cleverly reduced their stadium-sized rock to a clicking micro-universe on the intensely intimate Kid A.

a reflection of society… I think punk simply means you ask questions, which is what I try to do in my work. Initially your aesthetic was really bright, fun, kind of clownish... and you even made most of the costumes didn’t you? The aesthetic of the first album was bright and bold, I loved the way artists like Klaus Nomi used silhouette. I still make the majority of my stage clothes, but they have changed with the mood of my latest album. Y persona and aesthetic feels more mysterious, like you’re holding back slightly now. differentiate between different types of art, because it all falls under the same umbrella, but I’ve always been aware of the power of music to galvanise people. Obviously there are similarities in both music and acting, especially the performance aspect, but what sets music apart for you? I have a punk spirit at heart, which means the only rules are… there are no rules. For the album, Behold, a Pale Horse I traveled to India to record alongside members of The Symphony Orchestra of India. I love the idea of cross-pollinating in art; it’s all about changing people’s perspectives. Before Behold, a Pale Horse you wrote and produced your debut album, Bone Of My Bones (released 2009), was that a massive task? I had tracks like ‘We Know All About U’, which were demos I’d already produced and anonymously uploaded to Myspace. It was also fun being able to co-produce with friends, including Mike Snow’s Andrew Wyatt, who cowrote ‘The Muzik’. ‘W.A.R.R.I.O.R’ was the stand out track for me on that album and is still a favourite to perform live Was there anything that made you want to produce, rather than handing it over to someone else? I decided to produce because of the deficit of female producers in music. And now I can look forward to doing more collaborations and producing for others too. Your second album is much darker, was there any particular intention behind that? Sometimes an artist’s work can be Your music persona feels a bit more mysterious now, like you’re holding back slightly even. Has this come about naturally, as a result of becoming better known as a musician, along with age and experience? I think a lot of people listen to music with their eyes and Orwellian themed songs like ‘We Know All About U’, from the first LP, were never bright subjects. Sonically the themes of my work haven’t changed, but the album cover of Behold A Pale Horse does feature one of the first 3D Printed shoes (on an album cover) designed by Dutch designer Iris Van Hepern. I think you’ll fall in love with Splore (most people do), it’s a pretty special weekend. What are your expectations of the festival? Well it is Valentine’s Day, so if I’m lucky, who knows. Splore is all about amazing costumes and dressing up, are you bringing anything special with you? Yes! I’ve been making my costume all week (and now pretty behind on everything else). What else have you got planned for 2014? Well I’m back in the studio, which will continue when I get back. I’m also pretty excited about some upcoming colabs and new projects.

Ebony Bones
British singer-songwriter and producer Ebony Bones is a bold, expressive artist whose daring and uncompromising image matches her colourful, genre-smashing sounds. But it took me leaving London to really find my voice. Through travelling it becomes evident we are more alike than unalike. I know you’ve done a lot of acting but how did you get into making music? My father’s a music fanatic and had a small street stall in Brixton market selling music when I was a kid. I fell in love with everything from The Slits to Public Enemy. Also, I never really
