Oil & Gas Networks

Applications
Comprehensive, Trusted Satellite Communication Solutions
The oil & gas industry demands efficient and reliable high-throughput connectivity for linking headquarters IT systems, technical experts, pipeline facilities, and infield and offshore drilling platforms to each other. As terrestrial infrastructure for communication purposes is often lacking in the remote and harsh environments identified with this industry, service providers are increasingly depending on alternative effective communication solutions. STMs SatLink family of VSATs and Hubs are ideal for withstanding harsh offshore environments and remote areas anywhere around the globe. With high-availability and throughput and 24 X 7 customer support, our SatLink system provides secure IP networking necessary for the voice, data, corporate communication, and large file transfer needs of the offshore industry. With mobile, transportable, and stationary options, the SatLink system can support various conditions for connecting support vessels, submergible vessels, barge vessels, oil rigs and offshore platforms, and inland operations under the same core network. Engineered to support a variety of services, our SatLink systems have been implemented for:

Applications & Features

Secure, Reliable Corporate Communications
With an increasing need to coordinate assets around the world, it is critical for service providers to ensure consistent, secure services for oil & gas corporate communications infield, offshore, and onboard. STMs SatLink products have advanced security features built-in and support AES-256 encryption to safeguard VoIP and data transfers. In providing uncompromising link availability, STM also offers dedicated backup links that are automatically enabled if the primary VSAT (or other link) is compromised. SatLink products are compatible with standard oil & gas communications equipment and IP protocols, so STM's solution can be easily integrated into existing IT infrastructure and applications at the remote and central sites. Our SatLink networks also employ superior modulation and QoS technology to prioritize different types of data and maxi m i ze b andwi dth utilization. This results in cost-effective networks that allow the simultaneous use of a variety of applications, such as voice, video, and data transfer without hindering the satellite link or interrupting service. Our SatLink line is also engineered with advanced features to extend MPLS (Multi-Protocol Switching) networks and ensure a reliable VPN (Virtual Private Network).

Applications
High-Throughput Bulk File Transfer
In e x p l o r a ti o n and production environments large amounts of data is collected that must to be transmitted to a central data processing site for assessment. Huge files need to arrive quickly, error free, and with no lost packets or truncation. STM's SatLink networks support accelerated TCP/IP file transfers at over 10 Mbps from remote sites, with aggregate inbound transfer capacity at over 20 Mbps from a single VSAT. SatLink networks are ideal for these bulk file transfers since bandwidth is dynamically assigned where needed, with advanced bandwidth controls such that priority sites or files are never blocked or delayed, and bandwidth is not wasted.

Meeting Offshore Maritime Mobile Requirements

A robust oil & gas network requires connecting to all types of remote sites, vessels and assets. This includes not only fixed platforms, but also mobile drilling units, floating production platforms, various type of supply and crew ships, and even unmanned units. As many mobile sites require the use of advanced stabilized antenna systems, SatLink supports antenna control protocols and is compatible with leading antenna manufacturers. Building on close relationships with antenna providers, STM has deployed systems for thousands of oceangoing vessels, including offshore support, submergible, and barge vessels, worldwide.

Applications
SatLink VSATs also support GPS interfaces and other standard maritime applications for concurrent delivery of high-speed data, hotspot services, and VoIP and video services, both streaming and interactive (i.e., voice or video conferencing). The SatLink system allows for service flexibility, as well as the ability to upgrade or downgrade contracts as required to meet various vessel needs.

Crew Welfare
Ensuring high crew morale by providing more comfort away from home is essential for the demanding oil & gas environments, which are often in remote locations disconnected from the rest of the world. With STM's IP-based VSATs, offshore workers and crewmembers can stay in touch with their friends and family with high quality VoIP services, email, and other Internet applications, as well as unwind with a fresh selection of streaming video or TV programming. These applications can share a common VSAT with other applications or use a separate dedicated VSAT for increased total capacity and better security, all managed as part of one global network.

Network Monitoring for Gas Pipelines and Other Assets

STM is a leader in satellite communications solutions for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA). This technology is commonly used to monitor gas pipelines, as well as other utility infrastructures. STM's SCADA solution enables 24x7 surveillance and control, with dynamic capacity on-demand for local voice or data, as needed. Video surveillance of pipelines and other oilfield assets may also be required, depending on location. SatLink VSATs, with the inbound highthroughput capabilities for IP traffic allow all such traffic to efficiently and effectively share a common VSAT.
