Ya hemos visto antes algunas peticiones con Would you? (podras).Recuerde que empezar una solicitud con would es una forma muy educada de pedir algo. Como ocurre con el resto de los verbos defectivos, siempre va seguido de un infinitivo sin to: Would you open the door, please? Podras abrir la puerta, por favor? Podras hablar despacio, por favor?

Would you speak slowly, please?

En el ejemplo siguiente el verbo give (dar) va seguido de dos complementos. El orden ms habitual en ingls para los complementos es en primer lugar el complemento indirecto, en este caso me, y en segundo lugar el complemento directo, en este caso a coffee: Would you give me a coffee, please? Podras darme un caf, por favor? En los ejemplos siguientes se sigue este mismo orden: verbo + complemento indirecto + complemento directo get me a drink

Observe que the bill (la cuenta) en ingls norteamericano es the check. El complemento indirecto puede ser un pronombre. En ingls los pronombres que actan como complemento directo o indirecto son los pronombres objeto: me, you, him/her/it, us, you, them:

Peticiones corteses con to y for

Recuerde que el orden normal de las palabras cuando hay dos complementos a continuacin del verbo es: verbo + complemento indirecto + complemento directo Would you give Mr Red the bill? Podras darle la cuenta al Sr. Red? Este orden se puede invertir si se utilizan las preposiciones to o for delante del complemento indirecto: verbo + complemento directo + to/for + complemento indirecto Would you give the bill to Mr Red? Por regla general se utiliza: to Cuando el verbo indica que el complemento directo es algo que pasa a otra persona, por ejemplo: Podras darle la cuenta al Sr. Red?

Por lo tanto, el cambio de orden entre los complementos en las frases siguientes no altera el significado. Las dos frases de cada pareja significan lo mismo: Would you get us a taxi? Podras conseguirnos un taxi? Would you get a taxi for us? Podras conseguir un taxi para nosotros? Would you give my son the bill? Would you give the bill to my son? Podras darle a mi hijo la cuenta? Podras dar la cuenta a mi hijo?

Ofrecimientos con shall - revisin

Recuerde que el verbo defectivo shall se utiliza con frecuencia para hacer ofrecimientos. En este caso se utiliza Shall I? con el significado de Te gustara que yo ?. Por ejemplo, cuando uno se ofrece a ayudar a alguien: Shall I help you? Te ayudo? Recuerde la siguiente construccin para pedir algo con would en que el verbo va seguido de dos complementos. Igualmente, a pesar de tener distinto orden entre complementos los dos significan lo mismo: Would you bring him a coffee? Podras traerle un caf? Would you bring a coffee for him? Podras traer un caf para l? Para expresar ofrecimientos con shall se utiliza una construccin similar, es decir, el verbo seguido de dos complementos. Por ejemplo:

 verbo + complemento indirecto + complemento directo Shall I make you a cup of tea? Te hago una taza de t? Shall we give you some money? Le damos dinero? Tambin para ofrecimientos con shall se puede invertir el orden normal entre los complementos utilizando las preposiciones to o for: verbo + complemento directo + to/for + complemento indirecto Shall I make a cup of tea for you? Te hago una taza de t?

Shall we give a present to them? Les damos un regalo? Por lo tanto, los ofrecimientos pueden construirse con un verbo seguido de dos complementos, que pueden estar en un orden distinto al habitual si se utiliza to o for: ~Shall I get you another drink? ~No, thanks. Would you get me a taxi? ~Shall I get another drink for you? ~No. Would you get a taxi for me? ~Te traigo otra bebida? ~No, gracias. Podras conseguirme un taxi? ~Traigo otra bebida para t? ~No. Podras conseguir un taxi para m?

Sugerencias con shall we y lets

Recuerde cmo se utiliza shall we para hacer una sugerencia que representa hacer algo con otra u otras personas: Shall we stay at home tonight? Nos quedamos en casa esta noche? Shall we go on holiday next week? Vamos de vacaciones la semana que viene? Se pueden hacer sugerencias similares con lets (= let us): Lets play cards. Juguemos a las cartas. No me gusta esta pelcula. Vayamos a casa.

I dont like this film. Lets go home.

No hay diferencia importante de significado entre sugerencias que empiezan con shall we o con lets. Las dos frases siguientes significan casi lo mismo, aunque la primera frase, por ser interrogativa, deja algo mas abierta la respuesta que la segunda, que es como un imperativo: Shall we have a cup of tea? Tomamos una taza de t? Lets have a cup of tea. Tomemos una taza de t.

Para pedir a otra persona sus sugerencias se utiliza shall we precedido por una palabra interrogativa, what (qu), where (dnde), when (cundo), what time (a qu hora), who (quin): What shall we do tonight? Qu hacemos esta noche?

Where shall we go on holiday? Dnde vamos de vacaciones? When shall we get married? Cundo nos casamos? What time shall we meet tonight? A qu hora nos encontramos esta noche?

Utilice lets seguido por un infinitivo sin to para responder: lets + infinitivo play chess. Juguemos al ajedrez. go to Florida. Vayamos a Florida. Lets get married next year. Casmonos el ao prximo. meet at 8 oclock. Quedemos a la 8. Tambin se utiliza lets para contestar a sugerencias que utilizan shall o lets: Si una sugerencia nos parece acertada se utiliza good (bueno) o great (estupendo) para responder: ~What shall we do tomorrow evening? ~Lets have a party. ~Great! Who shall we invite? ~Lets invite my parents. ~Hm...! What a good idea. ~Qu hacemos maana por la noche? ~Hagamos una fiesta. ~Estupendo! A quin invitamos? ~Invitemos a mis padres. ~Hum...! Qu gran idea. ~Shall we go home? ~Yes, lets (go). ~Lets have another drink. ~No, lets go home. ~Nos vamos a casa? ~S, vmonos. ~Tomemos otra copa. ~No, vmonos a casa.

Tambin se puede contestar una sugerencia diciendo lo que se quiere o no se quiere hacer con el verbo want (querer) seguido por un infinitivo con to: want + to infinitivo ~Shall we go to the cinema? ~No, I dont want to see a film. ~Shall we go out? ~No, I want to stay at home. ~Vamos al cine? ~No, no quiero ver una pelcula. ~Salimos? ~No, quiero quedarme en casa.

Naturalmente, tambin puede decirse que no gusta la sugerencia utilizando el verbo like (gustar): ~Lets go to the Bombay Restaurant. ~Im sorry, I dont like Indian food. ~Vayamos al restaurante Bombay. ~Lo siento, no me gusta la comida india.

Permisos y prohibiciones

Muchos letreros indican lo que no est permitido hacer utilizando la forma -ing de un verbo, por ejemplo:

NO APARCAR

Observe otros ejemplos de letreros que utilizan la misma construccin: No + forma -ing del verbo smoking No fumar cycling No montar en bicicleta NO swimming No nadar fishing No pescar Para respaldar el significado de estos letreros se utiliza You cant con un carcter impersonal, es decir, que a la gente en general no le est permitido aparcar, fumar, etc. Fjese en que para llamar la atencin sobre el significado de un letrero se usa It says (dice). Por ejemplo, un guardia de trfico podra decir: You cant park here. Look at the sign. It says No parking . No se puede aparcar aqu. Mire ese letrero. Dice No aparcar. De forma similar se puede respaldar el significado de otros letreros. Como sabe, los verbos defectivos van seguidos de un infinitivo sin to: You cant + infinitivo smoke here. No se puede fumar aqu. cycle in the park. No se puede montar en bicicleta en el parque. You cant swim in the lake. No se puede nadar en el lago. fish in this river. No se puede pescar en este ro.

Cmo denegar permisos y rehusar peticiones

Para decir de una forma bastante educada lo que no se puede o no se debe hacer, o lo que se preferira que alguien no hiciese, se utiliza Please dont seguido por el infinitivo del verbo: Please dont + infinitivo run in the corridor. Por favor, no correr en el pasillo. play loud music. Por favor, no poner la msica alta. Please dont shout in the library. Por favor, no gritar en la biblioteca. touch. Por favor, no tocar. Para sealar lo que no se puede hacer de una forma ms corts se puede usar Im afraid you cant: Im afraid you cant smoke in here. Me temo que no se puede fumar aqu dentro. Im afraid you cant play over there. Me temo que no se puede jugar all.

Recuerde que despus de una peticin, en la respuesta, tanto si es afirmativa o negativa, se puede utilizar la palabra so a continuacin del verbo think para evitar repetir toda una frase: ~Can I smoke here? ~Yes, I think you can smoke here. ~Puedo fumar aqu? ~S, creo que se puede fumar aqu.

o bien: ~Yes, I think so. ~S, creo que s.

Veamos otro ejemplo: ~Can you talk in the auditorium? ~Se puede hablar en el auditorio? ~No, creo que no.

~No, I dont think so.

Para respuestas negativas que indican una prohibicin puede utilizar la expresin Im afraid not para sealar de forma educada que algo no est permitido o para rehusar una peticin: ~Can I eat on the bus? ~Im afraid you cant eat on the bus. ~Puedo comer en el autobs? ~Me temo que no puede comer en el autobs

o bien: ~Im afraid not. ~Me temo que no.

Veamos otro ejemplo: ~Can I sit here? ~Im afraid not. ~Puedo sentarme? ~Me temo que no.

Y si se quiere, se puede aadir una aclaracin para dar algo ms de suavidad a la respuesta: ~Can we swim here? ~Im afraid not. Its dangerous. ~Podemos nadar aqu? ~Me temo que no. Es peligroso.

Keep off

El verbo keep con el sentido general de mantngase se utiliza a menudo para indicar prohibiciones en lugares pblicos y privados. Fjese en el siguiente letrero que se encuentra en muchos parques:

keep off The grass!

NO PISAR EL CSPED!

Las preposiciones off y on indican movimiento o posicin en relacin con una superficie. La preposicin off sugiere la falta de contacto con una superficie, mientras que on sugiere lo contrario. Por lo tanto, se podra decir: You cant sit on the grass. The sign says Keep off . No se puede sentar en el csped. El letrero dice No pisar.(lit.: mantngase alejado) Observe otro letrero que utiliza el verbo keep:

Danger, keep oUT!

PELIGRO! NO ENTRAR

Las preposiciones out e in indican movimiento o posicin en relacin con un rea cerrada. Por tanto, se podra decir: We cant go in there. The sign says Keep out . No podemos entrar all. El letrero dice No entrar.

Cmo hacer peticiones y pedir permiso con may

El verbo defectivo may se considera la forma ms corts para pedir permiso y hacer peticiones en ingls. Una respuesta afirmativa con may tambin se considera muy corts. Recuerde que los verbos defectivos van seguidos de un infinitivo sin to. INFORMAL

El uso de may se considera bastante formal hoy en da y no se utiliza mucho en el ingls coloquial: ~May I use your telephone? ~Im afraid it doesnt work. ~May we sit down? ~Yes, of course you may. ~Puedo utilizar su telfono? ~Me temo que no funciona. ~Podemos sentarnos? ~S, por supuesto que pueden.

En las respuestas negativas es posible utilizar may not, que nunca se contrae: ~May I look at that book? ~No, you may not. ~Puedo ver aquel libro? ~No, no puedes.

Sin embargo, en el caso de denegar un permiso o una peticin, es ms normal utilizar cant, ya que may suele resultar demasiado duro en estos casos: ~May I park here? ~No you cant. ~May we sit in your garden? ~No, Im afraid you cant. ~Puedo aparcar aqu? ~No, no puedes. ~Podemos sentarnos en tu jardn? ~No, me temo que no pueden.

Se utiliza el verbo defectivo can, y nunca may, para relatar un hecho, ley o prohibicin ya existente: You cant see Mr Green. Hes not here. No puede ver al Sr. Green. No est aqu. You can park over there on Sundays. Se puede aparcar ah los domingos. You cant park here. Its forbidden. No se puede aparcar aqu. Est prohibido.
