Pet‟s help recovery from heart attacks. 421 adults found that dog owners had a better one-year survival after a heart attack compared to those who did not own dogs. Pets help us calm down. “A study of 240 married couples showed that pet owners had lower heart rates and blood pressure as compared to those without pets.” (Therapy Dogs International A brief History. Even though we use therapy dogs today we can go back and relate to the first therapy dogs and their effect from how and where they serve.

“It all started in WWII when a member of MacArthur‟s 5th air force squadron found a tiny yorkie in a fox hole in New Guinea.” (The First Therapy dog). One of the members of the squadron needed 6 dollars go get back into his poker game sold the dog to Corporal Bill Wynne and he named her smoky. Smoky spent the next 18 months by Bill in combat. They had to run a communications cable across an air strip. One way to do it would require shutting down the strip for several days, a dangerous proposition that would have expose the planes to enemy bombings. „‟But they figured out a better way to do it. Smoky crawled through a pipe that ran under the air strip with the wires attached to a string which was attached to Smoky‟s collar.” (The First Therapy dog) Smoky participated in 12 combat missions and was awarded 8 stars. When Bill became ill his friends brought her to the hospital to visit him. And thats when Therapy

dogs were born. Dogs have longed had special standing in the medical world. “They are trained to hear for the deaf, see for the blind and move for the immobilized, dogs have become indispensable companions for people with disabilities.” (The Healing Powers of Dogs) Dogs appear to be far more than four legged health care workers. One Japanese study found pet owners made 30 percent fewer visits to the doctors. “A Melbourne study of 6,000 people showed that owners of dogs and other pets had lower cholesterol, blood pressure and heart attack risk compared with other people that didn‟t have pets.” (The Healing Power of Dogs) But dogs also have been shown to do remarkable things to improve health of their owners. There are stories of dogs warning their owners of imminent health threats. “The better health of pet owners could be explained by a variety of factors, but ,many experts believe companion animals improve health at least in part by lowering stress.” (15 Amazing Facts About Therapy Dogs) There is a lot of places and ways therapy dogs serve. “Colleges and Universities across the U.S bring therapy dogs to campus during midterm and final exams weeks to help students destress, relax and smile.”( Therapy Dogs: History and Purpose) These campus events are often referred to as „‟ Therapy Fluffies‟‟ a term coined by Torrey trust, the original founder of the Uc San Diego therapy dog de-stress event. A body of research has suggested that interactions with therapy dogs can temporarily affect the release of neurotransmitter in the brain. Every breed between the Great Dane to the Chihuahua holds potential to become a first-rate therapy dog.”Some individuals suffering from epilepsy or similar conditions take advantage of therapy dogs are capable of recognizing and alerting their masters and mistresses of an incoming events.” (Therapy Dogs: History and Purpose) Therapy dogs play a major role in todays society helping children to the elderly and the sick to the relatively healthy.Even though we use therapy dogs today we can go back and relate to the first therapy dog and their effect from how and where they serve.
